Warning: Spoilers
On Monday of Last Week is a movie directed by Akosua Adoma Owusu and an original book written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I've always heard of this film/book by Adichie when our English class studied Adichie's short story collections, The Thing Around Your Neck. However, we didn't cover the entire collection, and "On Monday of Last Week" is one of the short stories in the collection. On Monday of Last Week is then filmed into a movie by Akosua Adoma Owusu. It focuses on life as a Nigerian and explores themes such as race, liberalism, and sexuality. It is set in the urban period about Kamara, a Nigerian woman that is working as a nanny for Josh. Josh is a 5-year-old son of an interracial couple (Tracy and Neil).

Similar to one of the short stories with the same name as the collection, The Thing Around Your Neck, On the Monday of Last Week explores Kamara's culture disconnection. For example when Kamara learns that "half-caste" has a negative connotation in America and this magnified the sense of cultural disconnect. Also, just like "Imitation", Karama has a husband that tells her what to do. This showcases that the Nigerian culture's belief in marriage is that men take more rights in the family. And it also suggested that Karama may be lost and confused between her own needs and her husband's desire.

Because I read both the short story and watched the movie, I honestly like the short story more. So I rated this movie with an 8, but to anyone who likes drama films that explore race, sexuality, and liberalism, On Monday of Last Week is both a good short story and a film to read or watch.
