Variations on a Theme

Whoever can make the sale of an order for noodles exactly five feet long to the customer in the black beard and white carnation gets to marry the boss' beautiful daughter, Madge Kirby (in her last screen role), so Billy Bletcher and William Irving grab bundles of noodles and are off, breaking pasta as they go. When they find dozens of men who match that description, they get dizzy in the noodle.

I grew up knowing Billy Bletcher as the deep bass voice in so many cartoons. It's odd to discover he had spent the silent era as a capable, if rather short slapstick comedian in a couple of hundred shorts and features, dating back to 1914. In this comedy, the emphasis is on the various gags involving breaking noodles, and it's an astonishing variety.

Miss Kirby, real name Madge Whitehead, was born in Norfolk, England in 1884. After her movie career ended, she went on the stage until about 1929, then ... well, she died in Fresno in 1956.
