In 1941, Christian missionary Eric Liddell, one of the Olympic athletes portrayed in the film "Chariots of Fire", sent his pregnant wife Florence and daughters Patricia and Heather to safety in Canada, from the Japanese occupation of northern China during World War II. A third daughter, Maureen, was born soon afterward, in Canada. They never saw their husband and father again, as Eric died of a brain tumor six months before the liberation of the Weihsien internment camp. In May 2008, the three daughters of Eric Liddell return to China for the first time since 1941.
