RESONANCE tells a story about the connection that arises when a seemingly unrelated series of tragic events unite a man and a little girl in their pain. Ghamari loses his wife and daughter in a hit and run accident. Ghamari then meets Little Rani at a variety shop and immediately feels protective of the girl. When Rani's Granny has insufficient money to pay for gifts at the shop, Ghamari offers his help. He asks Rani's Granny if he can meet with them at the next day for a walk but they never show up, which makes Ghamari uncomfortable with a sense of unease. Later, Ghamari finds out that Rani's mother and brother died in an accident he had witnessed but ignored, and a similar accident occurs later to him where his daughter and wife perish under similar circumstances. This tragic event is what makes Ghamari realize that his connection to Rani was the source of a similar pain. A tragic occurrence that makes them vibrate on the same resonance and helps them unite for only they know how each other feel.
RESONANCE main themes is that of an unspoken empathy between a man who has lost his wife and daughter and a little girl who loses her mother and brother. The significance of this event and how it unites these two people and their paths. For Ghamari and Rani are meant to be together as a new family, united by this tragic event that has taken two members of their family each. Destiny makes both of these people unite in order to compensate for their pain. As if they both existed on the same cosmic vibration that makes them be part of the same resonance. Ghamari doesn't know why he feels protective to this girl, as if he had to become a father to her, while Rani certainly feel like Ghamari is a father figure she can look up to. But there's also guilt involved, Ghamari ignored the accident that left Rani without a family and was blind to this pain until a similar event happened to him. People sometimes can be unaware to what happens around them until a similar event happens to them and ignites their empathy too late. This union is not psychological, however, but rather spiritual through the concept of Anunad (resonance) in which people unite through love like an invisible radio-wavelength that connects people in silence. The similitude between both tragedies is what unites both Ghamari and Rani, and now there's an equilibrium once again, for Ghamari's loss is compensated with the arrival of rani to his life. Even if Ghamari is not directly responsible for this tragedy he is still an accomplice by neglecting to help when he could, and now he must make amends with little Rani, however, this is not a punishment for little Rani will take the place of the daughter he lost. This is the equilibrium that comes with them vibrating on the same spiritual RESONANCE. This spiritual union becomes powerful on screen thanks to the performances of Kaushal Kumar Singh and his experience as a stage actor and how he is able to direct other performances to show these emotions.
RESONANCE is a film that tries to raise social and spiritual awareness, by telling a story of how people sometimes only connect when similar tragedies occur to them. Similar tragedies uniting people is something very common in a world where people lack empathy for each other when their answer to the pain of others is "not my problem". This film is done with limited resources but with a purpose to tell the story the best way they can. Even if cast and crew struggle with the limitations of their budget, there is a mission here to awaken empathy in the audience's hearts through this story. Director Kaushal Kumar Singh makes the most out of what he has to be able to reach the hearts of people and introduce them to the concept of resonance or Aunad, which posits that people become intimate with others only when they connect spiritually through the invisible link of silence. There's also the message that it is not always necessary for tragedy to strike for people to unite spiritually, but rather simply through empathy and love. When there's no tragedy people go through their day not caring, but it's only trough tragedy that people awaken their hearts and suddenly feel the need to help out others. This is a superficial connection at times, even if the intention is good. We should be able to always connect, even when we don't suffer a similar tragedy to others. In RESONANCE however, the union is much more specific and therefore unique. The special significance of the accident posits that destiny is at work here and that it is no coincidence at all that Ghamari and Rani are to be united. We overlook events like this in our daily lives, but we must be open to the special significance of these events which may change our lives in ways we don't know yet. This is truly a narrative effort to portray the forces of destiny at play and how they often work to connect us despite our pain and tragedies. We don't know what the future will hold for Ghamari and Rani at the end of the film, but there's a strong chance that they will help each other heal and grow together as surrogate father and daughter.
