The show goes on very nicely

After the shock departure of Ben Miller (DI Richard Poole) followed by the sudden departure of Kris Marshall (DI Humphrey Goodman) the shows makers could have taken a decision which could have led to the shows demise.

Instead they made one of those decisions that are made once or twice in a career. Ardal O'Hanlon as DI Jack Mooney fits effortlessly into the well defined and very fluid cast. The idea of having his daughter with him looks well chosen and the way he is being gradually sucked into the job is both clever and mirrors the way previous incumbents efforts to leave the island was nicely thwarted by police commissioner Commander Selwyn Patterson.

The story is very interesting dealing with the murder of Drop the Dead Donkeys Joy Merryweather (Susannah Doyle) 8 years previous. The case is reopened when a witness comes forward after the event with further information which throws the verdict into dispute. For Big Bang Theory Fans.. nice to see Barry Kripke. Nice story, nice humour (especially bar scene with Florence and jack Mooney) and another lovely episode.

The best of the season so far!

Warning: Spoilers
After Kris Marshall left the show quite abruptly, I was looking forward to where "Death in Paradise" could go next with Jack Mooney. To my surprise, the debut of Mooney is more than good. "In the Footsteps of a Killer" is easily the best of the season so far.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. Everything looks and sounds good. The acting's pretty good too. Tony Gardner gives a compelling as the victim's husband and it was nice to see John Ross Bowie outside "The Big Bang Theory".

. The murder mystery is hugely compelling with welcome twists, turns and red herrings. The characters are well-written and the solution to this mystery (the husband killed his wife) is easily the most satisfying conclusion of the season.

. The humor is quirky most of the time, JP's character gets more lovely and funny as the episodes go on.

But...

. There could have been more development to Mooney, because this being his third episode in the show. The facts he had a wife and he cares for his daughter are just not enough.

Overall, this episode is a very good one.

The Mooneys

Warning: Spoilers
Ardal O'Hanlon starts to settle in as DI Jack Mooney, with Mooney's daughter Siobhan (played by Grace Stone) in tow. I've been a fan of Death in Paradise since it debuted over a decade ago, and I had a sense that Siobhan wouldn't play a major role in the series, and all up she was in only six episodes.

Susannah Doyle, famous for her role in the newsroom sitcom Drop the Dead Donkey, guest stars.

I do wonder quite seriously really how the police photograph the suspects for their whiteboard. Really, at the crime scene do they gently ask the suspects to calmly pose for the whiteboard init, I don't quite get it really. Anyway, more credit should also be given to the two paramedics who turn up at the crime scene. They play a pivotal role in the mission of the police.

Ardal O'Hanlon seems to have no real character
snootusmaximus2 June 2017
Both Ben Miller and Kris Marshall brought their own character quirks to the role of DI in Death in Paradise. Ben Miller made his character a slightly curmudgeonly, sun-and-beach-and-sand-hating genius who rarely smiled, yet sometimes showed a sensitive side. Kris Marshall, in my opinion, was the best of the three, with his priceless take on the detective - a bumbling, dopey, introverted, hopeless romantic.

Ardal O'Hanlon seems to have brought nothing special (as yet) to the role. Watching him reminds me of watching... boring porridge. So far, nothing in his character has been endearing, nothing leaped off the screen, nothing made it memorable.

I'll give it time, and a few more episodes - perhaps he needs a couple of episodes to "get a feel" of the character and its quirks, and make it his own. After all, Sara Martins said of Kris Marshall, "Luckily with Kris, he's a locomotive himself!".. perhaps Ardal will eventually make the role his own, and the show won't have to be killed off because the lead was as interesting as a plain, white bed sheet.
