What weakens us; our motives, situation or the societal standards?
ridi-arahan15 July 2020
What worked:
  • powerful and disturbing screenplay; the movie is a brutal, raw tale of a village in India. I was surprised by the content and the theme of the movie. It's a stellar performances by many of the finest actors of the industry. At times, we feel the anger, pain and rage of the characters, and at other time makes us sad about the brutal tale of the society. It's a satirical movie, which makes us question the decisions of the lead characters, and also keeps us ponder about the idea of the movie.
What did not work:
  • I am not arguing about the content but if there was a higher level of dignity and moral ethics displayed in the movie about the woman Bhouri, it would have been a better watch I think. Somewhere down the line, we see Bhouri falling prey not by the societal expectations but by her own action at one rainy light. I wish if that scene was not there or if the intend of her action was lead by any other motive, it would make a finer overall impact. Nethertheless, it's a powerful movie despite some of my concerns.
Final verdict: recommended

What a revenge!!!
vinayshri10 July 2020
Starting of the movie was kind of slow but at some point story took sudden turn and that start to interest me. Although it was a Village story, so there were some parts that needed to be filled but left open. Worth a shot!

A woman bruised, an explosive consequence
msunando9 June 2020
A young, coy and pretty Bhouri (Masha Pour), widowed 3 times in the past is married off to a middle aged Dhanua (Raghuvir Yadav), a daily wage labourer at a brick kiln in his village. Set in an underdeveloped rural part of Uttar Pradesh, Bhouri soon becomes an object of lustful desire of the village panchayat members, the alpha males who covertly harass her, asking for sexual favors. They leave no stone unturned to make lives of Dhanua and Bhouri difficult by first expelling the former from employment, declaring him a patient of AIDS and finally banishing him from the village. Bhouri tries her level best to fight back against the exploitation and harassment but beyond a point, fails to make ends meet or fetch a decent living for herself and her ailing husband. She succumbs to the situation finally, setting her own terms for her surrender and in the process, sets off a chain of uncontrollable reactions that jeopardizes the lives of many.

Bhouri is a remarkable story underpinning the exploitative nature of the male dominated, privileged society of rural India where women languish as a machinery for procreation and an object of desire for the powerful and moneyed. The economically weaker people who toil for their daily bread are completely at the mercy of those who rule the roost, and are compelled to sacrifice their women folk to stay alive. Their world is across a vast and deep chasm separating the urban culture of women's empowerment, and unless education and basic human rights reach every book and corner of the country, they cannot be alleviated from their feebleness.

Marked by some powerful performances, Bhouri is a tragic tale of a failed grace and determination to fight back with dignity. Raghuvir Yadav is natural yielding a stirring performance as the helpless Dhanua. Masha Pour in the titular role is poised, dignified and exudes confidence. Kunika, Shakti Kapoor, Mohan Joshi, Manoj Joshi, Mukesh Tiwari and Sitaram Panchal lend strong support highlighting the plight of the villagers and Aditya Pancholi shines as an upright police officer who doesn't care about hierarchy and power centres. Bhouri is a wake up call to make a difference to the lives of the underprivileged in whatever way possible, and help make women's lives worthwhile by restoring their rights to dignity and equality.

Intense in dealing with women in a patriarchal world
shaistahkhalil28 October 2018
Gripping from start to finish. No dull parts, journey shows how women are treated as objects by all male relations and non relations. She is seen as weak and totally dependant on the males to provide, however an interesting viewpoint shows how men are slaves to their desires and need constant gratification from women and how their ego is hurt when their advances are rejected .

Love Bhouri
nunezyudelka12 December 2017
This is not bahabuli that's for sure. But for low budget film Bhouri cut straight to my heart. The sad thing is people dont realize that sexual Harassment in villages such as this one is real. India has a very high rate of women suicide the second highest in the world. For reasons as those in this film. If you take the time to see Bhouri you will see it doesn't cut corners and it has no fiction aside from the charecters.

Always thrive for better
ranushekhar-7216625 January 2018
The movie was based on a serious story, harassment in rural India and women exploitation. The movie does give goosebumps at some point and frustration if you know the reality of rural India. This movie has some good points about being low budget it shows the real scene and set up. The main lead is just a doll in acting and expression. Being it could be better with an indian skin and better acting. Movie was monotonous in story and very slow. Some were unrealistic situations and hard to believe. Some actors really pulled it hard to bring it to watchable level with serious story rest like main lead ruined the emotions that may come out of the character. I wish good luck for next venture for better actors and story line

Offbeat but good
rohitladha27 August 2018
Offbeat but good. . Beautiful direction along with the storyline. . Language though was an issue as all actors had varied accents despite shown to be living in same village for years. .

Story of female exploitation in the era of male exploitation by females
mahavir-1209019 July 2022
Story is like 40 year old time whereas today male is being exploited by females due to gender biased laws. Irrelevant in today's time where male suicide is 2.5 times of females in india.
