I'm just gonna assume that Mr. Sherman was on crack when he wrote the screenplay for this flick
LBarlane2426 January 2021
Written and directed by Adam Sherman, She's Just a Shadow revolves around a young woman and her family in Tokyo, along with her abusive gangster, a sadistic, perverted, serial-killer who ties his victims (all being women) to a railroad, and last, but not least, numerous prostitutes prancing around in their birthday suits; yeah, it's as jumbled as you would expect.

Let me start off by mentioning the direction ... It's fine, nothing spectacular, even when it's questionable at times; I'll get to that in a little bit. The writing however, let's just say that a 1st-grader could've written a better script than this. Like I said, it is a completely jumbled mess. The characters are mostly 2-dimmensional, especially the lead, and the acting, well, let's just say that 'wooden' would be too kind of a description for it.

And last, but certainly not least, I should mention the over-the-top violence and the needlessly gratuitous-nudity. First and for most, I am not a prude (quite the opposite in fact), nor do I have anything against blood or gore, as long as the two actually do something to service the plot and/or story-line. The gratuitous nudity did nothing to service the plot as much as it was used simply to pander to adolescent male viewers while the over-the-top violence was added purely for shock-value; and if you've actually seen the movie, you know which specific scene I'm referring to.

All-in-all, if you're a hormonal edgy-wannabe teen, knock yourself out and give this one a watch. Otherwise, do not listen to the positive reviews on this platform, they're liars. All that being said, I'm giving She's Just a Shadow 3.6/10 stars.

My Review Of "She's Just A Shadow"
ASouthernHorrorFan10 October 2019
The story is a blend of traditional underground crime thriller exploration of sub-culture and more experimental risque imagery circling tropes such as sexploitation and torture porn. There is heavy influences that permeate the film, most notably Tarantino and Stahelski. The synopsis and my initial description make "She's Just A Shadow" seem like a very exciting film. And given the cinematography and set design for a lot of the scenes, this movie has some cool moments. But...there are several flaws here.

First off, the story moves so freely that there is a feeling of "lack of cohesion" that makes it hard for any of the major plot points to sink in. The foundation starts to feel weak. It is a gritty and interesting story, and the setting and subject matter are pulp fiction candy tropes. Unfortunately there seemed to be more focus creating moments of extreme sensationalized tableauxs, than creating solid story continuity. Again, there is some really cool stuff happening in "She's Just A Shadow", unfortunately it all seems disjointed and more fitting to music videos and short film, arthouse pieces.

The acting is tight, the cast do a good job bring life to these characters, there just isn't enough written here for them to go on. Most of the characters are two-dimensional, weakly written "shadows". So much so that inorder to give them substance you really need to grab on to the film's title, and near hallucinatory asthetics and hold on for dear life. Something that helps equally with watching this one is the celebratory over-the-top display of violence and gore. There is plenty of blood flowing in "She's Just A Shadow". I just don't know if there's enough going on here to satisfy most film fans.

Nothin' there but titillation, and lots of it.
lotekguy-128 December 2022
A bunch of hookers and petty crooks snort mountains of coke and party constantly. The casting folks rounded up a slew of babes and dressed them as scantily as possible (or less) for most of the running time. Some got lines of dialog; most settled for lines of blow. There's enough eye candy to induce diabetic coma. All are herded onto several florid sets for a stupid script that barely justifies a bunch of gory interludes with heavy, often gruesome, casualties among the aforementioned and their rivals. Then, for icing on the perversity cake, they toss in a serial killer with an over-the-top signature style for reducing the female portion of the city's next census.

The plot falls apart long before the credits roll, taking down whatever empathy one might have felt for some of the characters along the way. Few, if any, will care who lives, dies or thrives by the end.

But those seeking the cheap voyeuristic kicks from films like Caligula could feel they've landed in hog heaven wallowing through this thing. Fans of loinscaping (If that isn't already a real word, it should be) will enjoy a generous array of configurations flashing on their screens throughout. The 5 rating is because this will be a 1 for some and a 10 for others. Pick your own adjectives for those on either side of the taste coin. I'd just say the package serves more tails than heads.

Pointless nudity and lack of proper story...
paul_haakonsen14 July 2021
I stumbled upon the 2019 movie "She's Just a Shadow" by random chance in 2021, and I must admit that I was immediately drawn to it, as the movie's cover is rather interesting. So of course I sat down to watch this, not knowing what I was in for, nor what to expect.

And wow, this movie was atrocious. It was an artsy-fartsy kind of movie trying to imitate movies made by Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, but writer and director Adam Sherman, whom is behind "She's Just a Shadow", just didn't have the particular grace or style that was being imitated.

"She's Just a Shadow" was essentially a movie glorifying the intake of illegal substances, prostitution and promiscuities, oh, and violence. And I must admit that I just found it difficult to wrap my head around the excessive use of rhinestones on the faces of the women in the movie, and the weird make-up with the tanned faces and white circles around the eyes. And "She's Just a Shadow" just had way too much focus on showing off naked women. Sure, this has appeal with a younger audience I suppose, but if you are sitting down to watch "She's Just a Shadow" with the hopes of it being a proper movie, you are in for a rude awakening.

I found absolutely nothing appealing or interesting here, and I gave up on the story about halfway through. By that time I had just had enough of pointless nudity, drug abuse scenes, and a whole lot of actual nothing going on. Talk about a swing and a miss from writer and director Adam Sherman.

And if "She's Just a Shadow" was supposed to take place in Japan, why is everyone speaking English? Even the news reporters on TV were speaking English. Nay, there was no credibility to this aspect of the movie.

The characters in the movie were pointless to me, as they were either just naked, selling themselves for drugs or money, or partaking in the usage of illegal substances. So yeah, there was nothing worthwhile here in terms of properly written characters with depth or appeal. And the mediocre dialogue wasn't exactly selling the characters either.

As for the acting in the movie, well for the most parts, then the performances put on were actually fair enough and adequate, considering the absolute lack of proper storyline and script here. But you will not find yourself in for an evening of Shakespearian performances, that's for sure.

"She's Just a Shadow" is not a movie that I will ever return to watch again, in an attempt to finish the last half of the movie. No, the movie just failed to entertain me or provide me with any sense of enjoyment. This was a waste of my time, money and effort.

I am rating "She's Just a Shadow" a two out of ten stars, and that is based solely on the production value of the movie. Ultimately, then the movie's cover and poster was actually the best thing about the entire movie.

I don't know what this movie is. i haven't seen this many bad actors since The Room. the dialogue is atrocious. and i've never seen so much nudity in a movie. i think there's a 98% chance they hired a bunch of high end prostitutes and/or models to be in this movie. and i say this having watched less than half the movie. one of the worst movie ever made (1 viewing, 2/19/2020)

Aesthetically Very Strong....Execution Wise Very Weak.
sebastianjamesnail8 June 2023
Often times a movie is bad and that is the end of it. I have never seen a movie that is so compelling aesthetically, yet so vapid plot wise.

Every character is, for the most part, a terrible person. Some just happen to be out protagonists. Women are naked throughout the entirety of the film, to the extend that you become entirely desensitized to it by the half hour mark. In fact it was far more intriguing as to why characters wore close at all.

The film is icky, disturbing and gross. Bloody but not violent. Lots of nudity but no sex. The world is bleak, but since everyone we meet sucks it's hard to feel that bad for them. There's no grounding point. Technically, the script isn't terrible, at least minute to minute. Beat to beat however, it becomes clear the movie's overall focus it it's edgy set pieces and its dark aesthetics because the plot is not even boilerplate.

It's an interesting idea, premise wise and aesthetically. Decent in small doses. Terrible as a movie.

Shadow to the front
kosmasp28 June 2020
A world full of sleaze, full of blood and nudity. Filth some may say and the "underground" that is shown here is morally bankrupt to say the least. With an added side story of a pervert who has a train and serial killer obsession. That may be putting it mildy. And yet, the movie looks gorgeous! And that is not a pun nor a reference to all the beautiful people who act in this (mostly nude).

Cinematography is tight to say the least. While the story may not be enticing to some, remember how some were cherising Giallo movies and made a big deal out of them? This makes more sense than some (if not most) of them. So while this is not an "homage" per se, you may watch it with that in mind. It tries to shock and it probably succeeds to some degree, but it also has a convoluted story that will either annoy you or entice you for being so out there ...

Nudity & violence....
srpnt9 September 2019
....what's not to like?

The film has a Tarantino-esq quality. It is well shot and well directed. The editing has a mildly artistic quality without being annoying. The acting is realist which lends a good gritty feel under all the polish.

Definitely worth watching.

It is Intriguing
dcmackdon18 August 2019
Honestly, a lot, and I mean a LOT of nudity and drugs. It basically tells the story of a group of friends dealing with street life, as the party, and party but the effects lead them to descend into darkness, sadness and madness. This can be often complicated to show as people break in different ways. This film did a good job of showing it. It can be confusing but it is worth a watch.

Strapped hookers and train killers.. Oh My!
barrelhousegutboy29 September 2019
This is what happens when you grow up in Tromaville and become a filmmaker. Imagine starting with Ichi the Killer and mixing in Scarface, Spun, Showgirls, and Summer of Sam while reading 50 Shades of Grey and you should be able to smell how this movie is. To say that this won't appeal to everybody is an understatement, but that has never determined whether a film is worth seeing. Despite the amount of time spent on scenes consisting mainly of nudity and drug use there is a story that unwinds as you go with a lump sum delivery in the last 10 minutes. Production value overall is good and the players skilled enough to deliver their dialogue naturally with the correct posture. If you are at all on the fence I would say give it a watch, you were curious enough to read this review so don't stop short here.

This is a masterpiece.
davesawesomeinbox25 October 2023
No spoilers. Yes, it seems like it was born from the mind of a pubescent boy who has been playing lots of grand theft auto and yakuza games. I loved it. It made me laugh so many times. Has nice twists. It has a small swirl of serial killer horror mixed in. The blood and gore and fighting are quite pleasing frankly. The acting is quite good. A unique and memorable film. Really goes out there fearlessly seemingly uncaring of what all the critics might think. I wish more films had such guts. And yet throughout the film there are numerous poetic ironies and engaging story to be engrossed by. Soundtrack was enjoyable. I genuinely did expect this to be a "b-film" due to other ratings. I'm glad i ignored the naysayers and found a film that stands out in my library.

Stylized Movie
dsphipps10029 April 2020
Everything about this movie is highly stylized, which automatically means that everything about it is going to be intentionally over the top. If you understand this and keep it in mind while you watch, it makes the experience a good one. If you're a person who only watches "normal" movies, however, then this will seem like trash to you. It's a shame, from the movie's rating, that there are obviously a lot of people out there who don't understand this.

Give it a go!
RoyMince28 September 2023
So let me start off by saying this this film is not the type of movie that somebody should be watching that is under the age of 17. There is a lot of of scenes that are for the older age range. I mean in all honesty it is not the best but it isn't half bad either and it's definitely worth the watch. When it comes to getting an audiences attention, this film does exactly that this is a recommendation I would like I would recommend to all fans of the topic and also the fans of the Indie community, , you have to keep in mind that the directors or Director has a vision and you have to try to get in their shoes to have the full understanding.
