Want to grow fur, fangs and howl at the moon? Well, in Byte, the new film from writer/director Eddie Lengyel there’s an app for that.
Jett, April, Nora (Carlie Allen) and Damon are hanging out on Halloween when Jett gets a bright idea. He downloads an app that claims, if you buy werewolf blood from them and perform the proper ritual, you can become a werewolf. It’s Halloween and there’s a full moon, so why not? Nobody seems surprised when the blood shows up almost immediately after he orders it, as if delivered by some lycanthropic DoorDash.
They’re also not surprised when the ritual seems to have no effect. But later that night, a woman walking home is torn apart by something large and hairy,...

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.
For those of you who dig totally bananapants filmmaking, Tammy and the T-Rex is being released this week courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome. Vs is also keeping busy with Berserker, Beyond the Door 3, and Unmasked Part 25, and Scream Factory is bringing home Body Parts, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, as well as a Steelbook Edition of The Slumber Party Massacre, too.
Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Edge of the Axe, and the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to the criminally underseen Two on a Guillotine.

— even if her script eventually muffles some of the film’s early promise. This low-key drama about a trans Filipina looking for love (and a green card) while working as a domestic in Brooklyn is low-key in the right ways, utilizing subtlety and suggestion in place of spelled-out backstories or case pleading. After a while, however, we need more emotional payoff than Sandoval is willing to provide. Nonetheless, this U.S.-Philippines co-production is well worth a look for niche programmers and distributors in various formats.

Isabel Sandoval is a New York-based Filipina filmmaker. Her feature directorial debut, “Señorita,” premiered in competition at the 2011 Locarno Film Festival, and won the Emerging Director Award at the 2012 Asian-American International Film Festival in New York. Her award-winning second film, “Apparition,” screened at the 2012 Busan International Film Festival and later played at the Museum of Modern Art. With her third feature, “Lingua Franca,” Sandoval is the first transwoman of color to direct and headline a film competing at Venice.
On the occasion of “Lingua Franca” screening at the Slovak Queer Film Festival, we speak with her about the situation with green cards in the Us, identity and the concept of transexuality, her cinematic approach towards the concept, and many other topics.
Can you explain the title in connection with the film’s context?

New York-based Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval’s “Lingua Franca,” about a transgender immigrant, is among 11 competition entries, all world premieres, that will launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.
The only U.S. entry set to compete in the section modeled on Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, “Lingua Franca” is Sandoval’s third work. It follows “Apparition” (2012), a period drama about cloistered Filipina nuns praised by Variety’s Richard Kuipers as an “outstanding sophomore feature.”
Produced by Tony- and Grammy-winning Filipino producer Jhett Tolentino, and by Darlene Malimas and Carlo Velayo, “Lingua Franca” is set in Brighton Beach, New York, where a transgender Filipina immigrant named Olivia – played by Sandoval, who is herself transgender – scrambles to avoid deportation. She becomes involved with a Russian slaughterhouse worker who is unaware that she’s trans.

In the Terrence Malick canon, A Hidden Life is reportedly one of his lower-budgeted films, with a net production cost in the high single digits. That’s significantly below the $32 million net cost of his 2011 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Tree of Life, which starred Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and a fresh-faced Jessica Chastain.
That’s remarkable considering Malick’s reputation for lengthy productions and improvised on-the-fly shooting, and A Hidden Life, about Austrian farmer-turned-wwii conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis, is reportedly the director’s longest production ever from pre-production to final cut. The majority of that time was spent in the editing room.
As riveting as Malick’s E.E. Cummings visual cinematic movies are, so too are their commercial prospects risky. For the most part, his movies don’t make money, even if they have stars like Natalie Portman, Christian Bale or Ben Affleck...

Jody Quigley truly embodies the suspenseful characters that he portrays, and as a result, his latest horror movie, Impuratus, is no exception. In fact, he spent hours in a make-up chair where an expert make-up artist worked to turn him into a 90-year old man.
The 38-year-old actor, best known for the suspense thriller, Apparition, portrays two stages in the life of Daniel Glassman in Impuratus; a young Civil War soldier, and a much older version of the man on his deathbed grappling with demons.
The stunning Teaser/Promo/Scene for Impuratus — an actual scene from the movie — complete with haunting music and special effects, has already won more than 20 festival awards around the world.
Now, the producers are seeking to attain the funding needed for a green light on the production. With expert writing, a talented cast, high production values, and many twists and turns, Impuratus clearly leaves us wanting more…...

Yesterday finally saw the arrival of the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the second entry in the spinoff/prequel series that aims to expand J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World from the Harry Potter franchise. And going by the trailer, it looks to be much more tied into the Potterverse than the last film, including an appearance from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!
But once fans had calmed down from geeking out about the institution’s cameo in the trailer, they started to notice something very odd. In the establishing shot of the magical castle, we see some figures Apparating (teleporting) into the grounds of the school. This wouldn’t be a problem normally, but it’s been a long established rule of Hogwarts that it’s protected by anti-Apparition spells in order to secure the safety of the students.
