Silly, Thrilling and Hilarious

Chicken/egg is written and directed by James D'arcy. Let's say he is very British and so is his work. It is the right combination of thrillingness and stupidity. This film is only 15 minutes long. But in this short time frame, Mr. D'arcy still managed to tell us a full story. In the beginning, it felt like a classic thriller, with two criminals planning their next theft. In the first scene, you see two men, an uncle named Kenneth and his nephew named Mark. The uncle desperately needed the help of his nephew. Mark agreed to help him, but his uncle had to do everything he asked for. The film gives the perfect illusion of these two men planning some sort of theft, but eventually they start to use terms as 'the crowd' which makes you question what they are planning exactly. It turns out Mark is a magician and Kenneth will be 'the diversion'. Are their plans not evil after all? With uncle Kenneth in a silly chicken suit and Mark the magician, they go to the party of some child. To make things even more exciting, the mom of this child happens to be the ex of Kenneth, who is currently playing a chicken. Mark performs his magic show and the chicken is used as 'the diversion'. The magic show is a success, but why is the chicken nosing through the jewellery of the mother? This feels like an immensely stupid thing to do. How could a man in a chicken suit ever sneak around a house full of kids without being noticed? Well, maybe the chicken wasn't the real thief. He was the diversion after all. CHICKEN/EGG is marvellously written. The story never gets boring. James D'arcy wrote a plot so complex, yet so easy to understand. When watching this film you get sucked into the story. In the beginning, it is just the right amount of vagueness. Enough to make you wonder whether Mark and Kenneth are criminals or really just entertainment for kids. When you think you finally got it and you'll never be surprised again, there it is, another plot twist. This unexpectedness makes the film astonishing. Not only is this film thrilling, but it's also amazingly hilarious. The silliness of the whole situation just made me giggle. Some scenes are shot in such a way that only the sight of them is amusing. The acting was spot-on, believable and with all the right emotions. With actors like Max Fowler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Hayley Atwell, that's nothing less than expected. The story is elevated by the brilliant work of these actors. They show a variety of expressions and interpretations of the situation their characters are in. If you think short films are too shallow and not exciting enough to watch, this film might change your mind. CHICKEN/EGG is silly, thrilling and exciting, all in just 15 minutes. I dare even say it is a directing and writing masterpiece.
