European Doc on the History of Molten Salt Reactors
ccharlesishack11 October 2017
French/German film by French filmmaker. Available in both languages with English subtitles, the target audience are those without science backgrounds.

Excellent film about a working 4th generation reactor which was successfully operated in the 1960's. It was soon defunded and forgotten because of political assumptions - which had nothing to do with the viability of the project. There are a few niggling details which are incorrect, but on the whole this is a excellent introduction to the subject of Molten Salt Reactors.

Unexpectedly well rounded documentary about Thorium and MSR (Molten Salt Reactors)

Unexpectedly well rounded discussion about Thorium and MSR (Molten Salt Reactors).

Covers a lot: history, technology, politics, advantages, disadvantages, reasons why not in use today.

I was left very impressed. Did not expect to stumble on such a well researched and complete documentary about Thorium/MSR on TV. I liked this more than Pandoras' Promise, even though I hate it when they translate people who speak English into German/French.

Would recommend this to both someone who has no prior knowledge of the subject as well as to people who've already seen a lot about the topic. I've personally seen lots of videos on the topic, but still learned some things which I had not known at all in this documentary.

An Unrealized Dream of a Technological Fixer.

I first saw the French version of this (different subtitles) when it first came out. There's also a German version.

This film has an animated physicist named Alvin Weinberg (1915-2006) reminisce about the best project he ever worked on, the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. A self-regulating, 100% safe, zero GHG emitting reactor to power human civilization for centuries to come. Everything Alvin says in animated form comes from his writings. [Note* Alvin knew all about climate change as he wrote a graduate school paper on GHG emissions, a few months later he was invited to join the Manhattan Project where he was one of several dozen invaluable contributors.]

There are also live action interviews with former colleagues and his son. These are mostly devoid of techno-babble and can be easily understood by a layperson. What really shows is the enthusiasm the elderly reactor workers have for the MSRE -- that one project they are most proud of. Why was it forgotten? Why aren't we pursuing this today?

Recommended for history buffs, nuclear students, or STEM obsessed grade schoolers. After all it's only nuclear physics -- not rocket science!
