"Siskel & Ebert" Carlito's Way/The Piano/My Life/The Three Musketeers/Jamón Jamón (TV Episode 1993) Poster

Gene Siskel: Self - Host

Quotes

  • Roger Ebert : [reviewing "Jamón Jamón"]  The scene involving the pig and the garlic is worth the price of admission all by itself.

Gene Siskel : Well, I think, y'know, this is a case where, obviously, you decided you were gonna laugh with the film rather than laugh at it, and I did the latter. I mean, I thought it was pretty bad. Uh, there's a very pretty woman in the picture, when she's on the screen, she's obviously very attractive, I looked at the film, that's the only time I enjoyed it. The rest, I thought, was really, real silly.

Roger Ebert : You're actually telling me now that you liked "The Three Musketeers"...

    Gene Siskel : Absolutely.

Roger Ebert : ...Better than "Jamón Jamón".

    Gene Siskel : Absolutely.

Roger Ebert : Well I think that if anybody is watching, who happens to see those two pictures...

    Gene Siskel : Right.

Roger Ebert : ...I would very much enjoy hearing from them, so that we can determine which of us, uh, has his head screwed on straight.

Gene Siskel : In other words, you're gonna define yourself by the audience reaction to your review.

Roger Ebert : Well no, I just think that a lot of people agree with sensible opinions, and so obviously, they will agree with mine.

Gene Siskel : [simultaneously]  Agree with me.

  • Gene Siskel : [reviewing "The Three Musketeers"]  This new version of the "Three Musketeers" is not a major film, but it is a whole lot more enjoyable than, let's say, that dismal "Robin Hood" remake with Kevin Costner that was so popular a few years ago. Everyone appears to be having a good time in this film without camping up things too much. I paid attention all the way through, and boy, I did not expect to.

Roger Ebert : Well, I knew I disagreed with you when you said you liked this film, but when you said it was better than Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood", I think you have taken leave of your senses, because...

Gene Siskel : YOU didn't like "Robin Hood"!

Roger Ebert : ...By comparison between the two films, though, because this movie...

    Gene Siskel : Yeah?

Roger Ebert : ...Is just... uh, it does it by the numbers. It doesn't interest me, the characters aren't, uh, there's no drama. It's just people riding around on horses, sword fighting with each other, y'know, "All for one, one for all", and it doesn't add up to anything.

Gene Siskel : I thought, I, I, first of all, costume dramas, I don't like 'em as a rule, they're very tough to get me involved, I thought this was light, fun, frothy, and I liked it just on that basis. And the costume picture, you didn't like it...

Roger Ebert : [interrupting]  It was light, and it was frothy, but it wasn't fun.
