"Siskel & Ebert" A Time to Kill/Manny & Lo/Kingpin/Joe's Apartment/The Adventures of Pinocchio (TV Episode 1996) Poster

Roger Ebert: Self - Host

Quotes

  • Roger Ebert - Host : [reviewing "Kingpin"]  The movie was directed by the Farrelly Brothers, Peter and Bobby, who also made "Dumb and Dumber". And the thing that makes "Kingpin" so funny is that it's fearless. It will do ANYTHING for a laugh and be as offensive as necessary along the way, and to create some truly weirdo characters. And I like the way Harrelson and Murray and Quaid sacrificed any shred of vanity while making their characters into world-class doofuses. Vanessa Angel is great to look at, but she's funny too. In fact, this movie is a reminder of how every once in a while, a movie comedy can slam dunk one big laugh after another, and I wasn't surprised to find out these were the guys who made "Dumb & Dumber", where they had the scene with the... with the parakeet...

    [chuckles]

Roger Ebert - Host : lost its head...

Gene Siskel - Host : Right.

Roger Ebert - Host : ...And I just about lost it in that movie, and now here's another movie where I was laughing pretty loudly.

Gene Siskel - Host : Well, I wanna thank them personally, because we give, obviously, more negative reviews to pictures, and we have mostly unhappy times when we go to the movies. And we're just hungry for experiences like this.

    [Ebert laughs]

Gene Siskel - Host : And let me tell you, the directors, I'm speaking right to the guys... here's what it was like in our screening room- we never talk about this. BIG laughs. Every single time you tried to make us laugh, we laughed. BIG laughs. It was thrilling to hear that. I'd say the first twenty-five jokes in the picture-

    [Ebert chuckles]

Gene Siskel - Host : these were laugh- not smiles, laugh-out-loud jokes!

Roger Ebert - Host : One joke didn't work, and I laughed, I laughed at it anyway because they had tried- and I'm talking about Randy Quaid in the men's room.

Gene Siskel - Host : Okay.

Roger Ebert - Host : And I thought, "They're gonna try ANYTHING, if they'll try that, I'll laugh at their ATTEMPT to make me laugh."

  • Gene Siskel - Host : [reviewing "A Time to Kill", after Roger gives some criticism of the film]  Oh, I wish you were reconsidering your vote.

Roger Ebert - Host : No, I, on basis, on...

Gene Siskel - Host : [chuckles]  On a very slim basis.

Roger Ebert - Host : ...Final analysis, I'm still voting thumbs up for this movie.

Gene Siskel - Host : You ripped this pic...

Roger Ebert - Host : But I'm nevertheless conceding the points that you made.

Gene Siskel - Host : Thank you very much.

    [to camera]

Gene Siskel - Host : Maybe next week, I'll get him to flip.

    [Roger rolls his eyes]
