This story takes place in India, during the late1990s, where and when it was a complete taboo for any young woman to get involved in a lesbian relationship. Repercussions are grave and swift as parents exercised absolute control and authority to even their college aged daughters. Something we Americans don't often see and is therefore difficult at times to watch.
In each episode of the web series, writer and director Roopa Rao guides the two young actresses, Spoorthi Gumaste and Shweta Gupta, who portray the protagonists, through a host of growing feelings. First friendship, then trust, then intensely growing love and finally longing.
From their interviews, it appears that neither of these young ladies had ever played such a controversial role before, yet they managed to pull off a pureness and sincerity that has made them instant stars and beloved figures throughout Asia. Fans constantly clamor for a season 2 or sequel but the talented Ms Rao is exploring new areas to light up the silver screen with. I don't know if she realizes that this series may have heavily contributed to India's recent enlightenment and loosening of restrictions against lesbians and gays. The series of short episodes is refreshing, clean and touching and it makes me as an American spectator also wish for a sequel. It is well worth the watch. Enjoy!
