Star Wars fans are in for a treat this year, as Ubisoft’s highly-anticipated Star Wars Outlaws finally has a release date. Developed by Massive Entertainment and created with Lucasfilm Games, the open-world adventure game is slated to release on 30 August 2024.
Preorders are now open, with an early access perk for Gold or Digital Ultimate edition buyers, allowing them to play from 27 August. But while hype is at an all-time high for the game, a recent discovery has set alight some contention among fans.

Star Wars Outlaws is a thrilling single-player adventure, which are far and few these days. This elevates the game’s hype, as you can expect it won’t have the predatory pricing systems that a lot of multiplayer games do, nor would it have annoying always-online DRM.

Not long ago, Lizzie No had an out-of-body experience while listening to Gillian Welch. The singer-songwriter had spent the past few years trying to make sense of the fractured, frighteningly personal songs she’d been writing, songs that spoke to a pain whose source she couldn’t always name. Many of them ended up on Halfsies, the stunning new record that the songwriter says is, in large part, about the “sensation of living in the scar without having any understanding of the initial wound.”
Which brings No (real name Lizzie Quinlan) to Gillian Welch.

As confirmed by Deadline, Richard Roundtree, the groundbreaking star of the original "Shaft" franchise has died as a result of pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Roundtree was a gifted athlete who played for New Rochelle High School's nationally-ranked and undefeated football team but later dropped out of college after he was scouted by Ebony Fashion Fair founder Eunice W. Johnson and began modeling for companies like Duke hair products and Salem cigarettes. “Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every time she decides to have a little bit of fun?” So says our female protagonist in writer/director Jt Mollner‘s Strange Darling, a film that dares us to question the roles men and women are expected to play. Are women just prudes who don’t love casual sex? Are men just rapist serial killers waiting for their next mark? What exactly are the boundaries of consent? Strange Darling asks these questions, making for a smarter-than-you’d-expect entry into the cat and mouse thriller genre.
Following an opening scroll informing us that the film we are about to see is a dramatization of the final known killings of a serial killer’s multi-state killing spree, we are introduced to “The Lady” who, in an extended slow motion sequence that plays over the opening credits, is...

As you may have heard, the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con International was not the usual Sdcc experience.
On July 14, the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA joined their writing counterparts in the WGA by going on strike and picketing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for its refusal to grant them a fair deal. Since the details of the strike preclude actors and writers from promoting their union-backed films and TV shows, many of the planned panels, promotions, and guests at Comic-Con had to bow out.
The end result was a Con that very much resembled the event’s earlier days before it became a action item on the calendar for big studios like Marvel, DC, and others to showcase their upcoming blockbusters. And you know what? It was all still pretty cool!

This would probably be a good time for IndieWire staff to buy Powerball tickets (a $1 billion jackpot!): As we predicted last year would happen, Netflix just scrapped its cheapest ad-free tier “for new or rejoining members” in the U.S. as well as the UK. That means current subscribers to that “Basic” tier can remain with the plan until they choose to select another one or cancel their Netflix account.
The same shift happened about a month ago in Canada; Netflix’s changes often trickle down through our northern border.
The issue was economics. Netflix wants to steer subscribers to either its “Standard with Ads” plan, which starts at $6.99 in the U.S. and £4.99 in the UK, or its commercial-free “Standard” plan. That one costs $15.49 per month in the U.S. and £10.99 in the UK, and it’s the one you probably have.

The Vampire Diaries was the crown jewel of The CW's line-up for several seasons.
The series wrapped its run in 2017 after eight romance and drama-filled seasons.
Paul Wesley recently spoke out against returning to that universe, and it has started a conversation about whether a reboot should come to pass.
In a new interview with Andy Cohen on Radio Andy, Nina Dobrev thinks people shouldn't even be talking about a reboot because "the show didn't even end that long ago."
"I'm very close with Paul [Wesley] and Kayla [Ewell] and Candice [Accola], and Kat [Graham], and the list goes on because it was such a big part of our lives for so many years.
"So it's hard not to stay in touch with everybody and see them when we can."
Wesley confirmed he was done with all things vampire-related, so Andy asked whether Nina was feeling the same.

Misfits and Outlaws: Jim Jarmusch's Cinema of Outsiders is now showing on Mubi in many countries. The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. In Permanent Vacation (1980)—Jim Jarmusch’s underseen, undercooked, wholly unpolished first feature—Aloysius “Christopher” Parker (Chris Parker), a disaffected young drifter who recalls the ’50s Jazz-Age hipster and presages the ’90s slacker, wanders around a bombed-out Manhattan without an agenda. He dances in his apartment as his indifferent girlfriend smokes out the window. He talks to various strangers: a concessions attendant at a repertory house, a streetwise saxophone player, a disturbed man who believes he’s in a war zone. Eventually, he steals a car and uses the profits to board a steamer ship to Paris, content to roam as if he’s a tourist on a… well, you know. It's almost beside...

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Throughout the years, Batman has given several young folks the opportunity to take up the mantle of Robin in the comics. Whether it be Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelley, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown or Damian Wayne, they all have supporters and a rabid fanbase backing them. If there’s one that folks have wanted to see up on the big screen perhaps more than any other, though, it’s Todd and more specifically, his persona of Red Hood.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Jason Todd was killed by the Joker back in A Death in the Family during the 1980s, before being resurrected in the controversial, yet seminal, Under the Red Hood nearly two decades later (time passes differently in comic book land). Usurping the Red Hood alias from the Clown Prince of Crime’s days predating his (more) flamboyant stage, Todd has since become one of DC’s most popular anti-heroes.

I understand the compulsion to find a fresh take on a classic tale. After all, you have the weight of literary history and beloved film adaptations to contend with, so a straight remake would be boring. But, when you tackle a Robin Hood tale, it has to be set in a plausible time and place, with characters that make sense.
The legend of Robin Hood dates back to the 13th or 14th century and in time grew in scope so it wasn’t just Robin versus the Sheriff of Nottingham, but came to encompass King John and the Crusades.
There are so many ballads and poems to draw from for inspiration that a nice, historically accurate film would have been welcome. Instead, Director Otto Bathurst and screenwriters Ben Chandler and David James Kelly went in entirely the other direction, creating a fantastical Medieval world that was visually stunning and entirely devoid of interest.

The debut feature from Australian director Stephen McCallum, this gritty biker gang thriller achieves a certain level of sweaty intensity and largely pulls off its Shakespearean parallels, though there are a few wobbles along the way.
Set in present-day Australia, the film centres on biker gang member Paddo (Ryan Corr), who has taken over leadership of the Copperheads Motorcycle Club during club president Knuck’s (screenwriter Matt Nable) three year stint in jail. When Paddo’s learning disabled brother Skink (Josh McConville) steals heroin from rival gang the Devils, Paddo brokers a mutually beneficial agreement with gang leader Sugar (Aaron Pederson) in return for his brother’s life.
However, when Knuck gets out of jail, he refuses to honour the deal, putting both Skink and Paddo’s lives in danger.

To mark the release of Outlaws on 18th February, we’ve been given 5 copies to give away on DVD.
Ryan Corr, who was put through hell in Wolf Creek 2, is plunged into another maelstrom here as would-be biker king Paddo. A bulked-up Matt Nable (Ra’s al Ghul from the TV series Arrow), who also co-wrote the film, is brilliantly menacing as Knuck, the gang leader who wants to reclaim his crown from the young upstart he left in charge. Abbey Lee, fast becoming a screen favourite with iconic roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and cult hit The Neon Demon, steals the show as the sly and scheming Lady Macbeth figure who tempts Paddo to take over.

I told myself not to mention Sons of Anarchy in my review for Outlaws before sitting down to watch. My reasoning came out of a desire to judge Stephen McCallum’s film on its own merits without trying to compare to something as zeitgeist-y as Kurt Sutter’s tragic downfall of a “good” man forced to do bad things in order to achieve salvation. What’s ironic, though, is that you don’t have to get too far into Matt Nable’s script to wonder if he was hoping we’d make the comparison. With his “should-be” leader Paddo (Ryan Corr) trying to take his Copperheads Motorcycle Club legit against Knuck’s (Nable himself) actual president returning from jail with violence and bloodlust in his veins, the underlying core conflict is almost identical.
The television show obviously has an advantage with its expanded breadth to flesh out characters, cement motivations,...

A24 has released the trailer for an Australian biker gang film called Outlaws, which was formerly known as 1%. If you’re a fan of shows like Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C., this is a movie that you’ll probably enjoy because it deals with the same kind of biker gang drama.
The story is set within the primal underworld of outlaw motorcycle club gangs, and this is the synopsis:
When an Australian motorcycle gang leader is released from prison, he finds his former deputy on the cusp of giving control of their lucrative drug trade to a rival gang. When the deal goes south, the ensuing violence threatens to spin out of control as the gangs must contend with external threats and subversion within their own ranks — culminating in a deadly face-off between the heavily-armed crews in this epic and action-packed biker thriller.
