The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). It also, at one point, had "The Last of Us" and "Chernobyl") writer Craig Mazin attached,...

With great power comes great responsibility. It’s a lesson Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) grapples with in Searchlight Pictures’ “The Greatest Hits.” The studio released the film’s trailer on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
In “The Greatest Hits,” Harriet (Boynton) finds that listening to certain songs (literally) sweeps her away to another time — like, she becomes an actual time-traveler. She is able to relive special moments with her deceased boyfriend (David Corenswet of “Pearl”), and could potentially even stop the car crash that killed him from even happening. It sounds like there’s a pretty big tradeoff, however, if she takes it to that point.
And then there’s the new guy, played by Justin H. Min (“Beef”), that she meets along the way. “Throughout her journey, Harriet explores the mesmerizing link between music and memory, facing her with difficult decisions of whether altering the past is a choice worth making,” the synopsis reads.

Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise made him the star he is today, but it is also his brainchild. As he wrote the captivating story of the first movie of the franchise, he had very little idea of the future of the franchise’s astonishing success.

Stallone, who was a struggling actor at the time, convinced the producers to star himself in the movie, and it made all the difference. However, despite writing several movies in the franchise and being its original creator, the actor had no rights to anything related to the franchise.

Sylvester Stallone crafted the Rocky universe, yet his foundational rights for Rocky were never rock solid.

Sylvester Stallone is synonymous with his breakthrough role Rocky Balboa. But despite the character being perhaps his most recognizable performance, Stallone doesn’t share too much in common with him.

It might be difficult to imagine someone else in the role of Rocky Balboa. The actor is very close to the role, as he wrote the character for him to play. But although Stallone was set on portraying Rocky, he and the famous boxer had little in common.

There is much to discuss here. For anyone who has played the games, Roth and the filmmakers certainly nailed a lot of the look. Claptrap (the robot character voiced by Jack Black) looks like himself. The world looks like the world of the games. It feels right in that sense. It also feels, cinematically, like a mix between Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films and "Mad Max." Ivan Drago was Rocky Balboa’s most fearsome foe and Dolph Lundgren’s chilling performance helped turn Rocky IV into a genuine classic. Thirty years later, Drago returned in Creed II, training his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) to face off against Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan). Following the positive fan reaction to Lundgren’s return, MGM announced a Drago spinoff movie, but we haven’t heard all that much about it over the last two years.

For much of their conversation, Ben Affleck and Michael B. Jordan seem mutually star-struck, even though they’ve known each other for 10 years. They first connected after “Argo,” Affleck’s third directorial effort, won best picture and Jordan’s career skyrocketed following his searing leading performance in Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station.”

“Creed III” cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau knew Michael B. Jordan had the mind of a filmmaker from their first collaboration together, the 2018 HBO film “Fahrenheit 451.”
“Even back then he had a very strong interest in the camera and cinematography and filmmaking,” Morgenthau tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
But after working together as cinematographer and actor on “Creed 2,” the pair took their collaborative relationship to the next level with “Creed III.” The boxing drama was Jordan’s directorial debut, and he enlisted Morgenthau to expand not just on the visual language the director of photography helped establish in “Creed 2” but also the “Rocky” franchise as a whole.

There’s a good old fashioned box office battle brewing.
Disney’s “Wish,” an animated adventure that had been expected to dominate the Thanksgiving holiday is facing off against Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” for the top spot over the five-day stretch. And the dystopian prequel, which is currently in its second week of release, is showing impressive resilience against the family flick. Plus, Apple Original Productions’ “Napoleon” is out-pacing initial estimates and giving the other two, more commercially-oriented films a run for their money.
Well, that’s the good news. The bad is that neither “Wish” nor “Napoleon” are performing like Thanksgiving blockbusters of yore, with the Disney movie looking like another box office dud for a studio that had previously enjoyed an unprecedented record of success. “Wish” earned a disappointing $3.9 million over Thanksgiving, bringing its total to $12.2 million.

In the first round of this year’s Thanksgiving box office battle, the victor was not the Walt Disney Animation film “Wish,” but rather Sony’s R-rated “Napoleon.” However, both films opened with promising pre-release preview earnings, offering hope that both films will achieve measured victories no matter which one “wins” the Wednesday-Sunday weekend crown.
Sony’s “Napoleon” began with a boom, earning $3 million in Tuesday preview screenings. That’s higher than the $2 million earned by Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” in 2019 and the $1.4 million earned by Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” in 2015. Both of which went on to top $40 million in their respective Wed-Sun Thanksgiving weekend launches.
That certainly is good news for Ridley Scott’s Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby-starring war epic, even if Sony was merely projecting a $45 million worldwide launch. Like Martin Scorsese’s “Flowers of the Killer Moon,” “Napoleon” is a big-budget epic produced by...

Michael B Jordan will return as star and director of Creed IV to explore the next chapter of Adonis Creed’s punchy life and career.
It looks like we’ll be getting another Creed film, according to reports that surfaced over the weekend stating that a fourth movie in the Rocky spin-off series is officially in the works. Not much else is known about the project, apart from that the franchise’s star, Michael B Jordan will not only reprise the character of second-generation boxing champ, Adonis Creed, but also he will once again direct the film too.
Jordan made his feature-length directorial debut with this year’s Creed III, adding another fine entry into what has so far been a rock-solid franchise, both in terms of quality and commercial success. The film ended its global box office run after grossing $275.3 million worldwide from a $75 million budget.

After “Creed III” grossed $275 million at the worldwide box office and established Michael B. Jordan as a formidable director, there was never much real doubt about whether the “Rocky” spin-off series would continue. The biggest question was whether Jordan would return to the director’s chair or use his newfound filmmaking clout to pursue other projects.
According to longtime “Rocky” producer Irwin Winkler, Jordan will in fact be back to helm the still-untitled “Creed 4.” In a series of video clips shared by Deadline, Winkler offered an update on the sequel’s strike-delayed development and Jordan’s creative involvement.
“We’re planning to do ‘Creed 4’ right now. We think we have a really good story, a really good plot,” Winkler said, adding that the project should go into pre-production roughly one year from now.

What does it take to create the sounds of a boxing champ? Turns out it requires a mighty force of trumpets, heavy percussion, and the fear of trying not to disappoint legendary music producer Dr. Dre, said Creed III composer Joseph Shirley, who joined Deadline’s Sound & Screen live music event to discuss the film.
Given that Creed III sees its leading man, Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed, try to make a home for himself and his family in Los Angeles, it only makes sense that West Coast rap icon Dr. Dre would not only be influential to the movie score but also be recruited as the film’s musical consultant.
“One of the tricks of this score was how do we incorporate [hip-hop] songs to blend it into the landscape of the score,” Shirley said about his attribution to the Death Row Records co-founder. “The way that the movie opens,...

Like the Italian Stallion, the "Rocky" films have seen some real highs and lows. Now spanning almost 50 years, it's a franchise that offers boundless entertainment, even at its most baffling. These movies are also formulaic to a "T." Even if you've yet to watch a single one, you probably already know what to expect: Rocky Balboa -- or Adonis Creed -- will be down on his luck when he's presented with a new opportunity to prove himself in the boxing ring. Or he'll be riding high only to get knocked flat on his ass and have to pick himself back up. Cue the training montage. It's predictable, but damn if it doesn't work like gangbusters, time and time over.
For the most part, the titles of the "Rocky" films are numerically ordered, which makes it pretty easy to figure out which one to watch after which. The only outlier is "Rocky Balboa,...

The “Transformers” franchise returned to theaters in 2023 with “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” the latest installment in the big-screen, live-action adaptation of the beloved Hasbro toy line. “Rise of the Beasts,” which is the planned start of a new trilogy, is the seventh film in the series. Chronologically, it comes after “Bumblebee,” which was a prequel to the first five films in the series. This means you don’t technically have to watch or rewatch any of the Michael Bay-helmed movies before — but don’t you kind of want to anyway?
In case you forgot, Michael Bay was behind the camera for “Transformers” (2007), “Revenge of the Fallen” (2009), “Dark of the Moon” (2011), “Age of Extinction” (2014), and “The Last Knight” (2017). Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”) took over for “Bumblebee” (2018) and Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”) stepped in for “Rise of the Beasts” (2023). If you're a fan of the "Transformers" franchise, you've seen some epic battles. They've taken place all over the world, from Stonehenge to the Great Wall of China to the pyramids of Giza. We've seen these robots in disguise fight it out with each other everywhere. The lore is important (the franchise has been around since 1984) to fans, and so are the characters: their look, their speech, and their interaction. There are CGI characters talking with humans ... the whole thing is complicated.
The most recent film, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" has just hit DVD, Blu-ray, and digital, meaning that we're getting a deeper look at how the film was made in the special features. In one of them, director Steven Caple Jr. is shooting a scene in Peru, when he gets a visit by Michael Bay. Bay, of course, directed the first five films in the seven-film series (so...

Across the "Transformers" franchise, from the 1980s animated series to its seven live-action films, the most recognizable and steady presence is Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime. For the younger generation, however, the voice of Pete Davidson in "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" is probably even more noticeable. The comedian, best known for his stint on "Saturday Night Live" and his raucous dating life, plays the Autobot spy Mirage in the latest robot-smashing epic, adding to the enduring legacy of bad jokes and cheesy dialogue the series has become known for over the years.
Returning to the franchise for the first time since the third film, 2011's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Mirage has the ability to project holograms and transform into a Porsche 964 Carrera. Originally voiced by the late actor Francesco Quinn, the addition of Davidson gave director Steven Caple Jr. ("Creed II") the opportunity to craft...

This year's Thanksgiving weekend will be packed with new releases, but they just might be chaotic enough to coexist. Historically, the holiday has been one of the high points of the slower fall months at the box office, particularly for family movies. The current record-holder for a Thanksgiving opening is "Frozen," which grossed $67.3 million Friday-to-Sunday and $95.3 million over the full five-day holiday weekend. With the exception of "Creed II," all the other movies in the top 10 are also family films aimed at a younger audience, including "Tangled," "Moana," and "Toy Story 2."
That bodes well for "Trolls Band Together" and "Wish," two of six new wide releases hitting theaters around Thanksgiving 2023, but what about the rest? The grim world of Panem is set to return in dystopian sci-fi "The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes." The mesmerizing tale of Rocky Balboa has been a cornerstone of American cinema since the release of the first “Rocky” movie in 1976. Portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, Rocky’s journey from a struggling boxer in Philadelphia to an international icon is a story that’s both empowering and poignant. And in recent years, this story has seamlessly transformed into the tale of Adonis Creed, breathing new life into a franchise that spans nearly five decades.
The Rocky series was always more than just boxing. It vividly depicted love, friendship, rivalry, and redemption. The recent Creed movies, helmed by the character Adonis Creed (Michael B. Creed marked a major comeback for both the Rocky franchise and Sylvester Stallone himself. Stallone’s last Rocky film before Creed, Rocky Balboa, was met with positive reviews for its storytelling and Stallone’s performance.
But nine years after Balboa, Stallone’s Creed performance would earn him even further praise and a few noteworthy award nominations. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. It was the first time the Rocky franchise brought prestigious awards attention Stallone’s way since the first Rocky.
It was a nomination that even surprised Stallone at the time.

In America today, no one has a lock on conspiracy theory. It has become the air we breathe, the Kool-Aid we drink, the rabbit-hole ideology that defines too many of us. Yet conspiracy theories come in different shapes and sizes. Many are false, some are true. Many are bat-house crazy, some are more than plausible. All, in one way or another, work as metaphors: for the forces that collude in hiding things from us, for the sinister tantalizing truth that we aren’t allowed to see.
“They Cloned Tyrone” is a slow-burn inner-city sci-fi nightmare thriller, one that plays off the spirit of conspiracy theory that has often thrived — with justification — within Black culture. The Tuskegee experiment was a conspiracy that happened; its horrific impact on the hearts and minds of African-Americans is beyond measure. ‘They Cloned Tyrone’ Review: John Boyega, Teyonah Parris & Jamie Foxx In Grim But Gutsy Genre Mashup
Rather resembling a blaxploitation-based cousin of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a deeper sense of social consciousness, They Cloned Tyrone is a predominately grim yet intriguing account of constrained, little-hope lives victimized even further by nefarious secret attempts to transform them into obedient, well-behaved zombies. Set in what appears to be the late ‘60s-early ‘70s based on the period cars, outfits and outlandish hairstyles, Juel Taylor’s feature directorial debut, which he wrote with Tony Rettenmaier, delivers live-wire performances from the young cast but nonetheless remains notably dire, even forlorn in its depiction of small-town lives momentarily confronted with a bizarre enemy found right in their midst. This Netflix offering opens theatrically July 14 for a week prior to its move to home tubes July 21.

Turn on “They Cloned Tyrone” at a random moment and you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a faithful remake of a Blaxploitation classic. In one early scene, the old-school pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) struts through a sleazy motel wearing a suit whose ridiculousness is matched only by his haircut. ’70s funk blares in the background as he tries to convince his top earner Yo-Yo (Teyonah Paris) to keep turning tricks for him. As she explains that she’s ready to move onto bigger things, the dialogue could be ripped straight from “Coffy” or “Foxy Brown” — until she mentions Bitcoin.
Yo-Yo — who earned her nickname because she keeps coming back after threatening to leave — is convinced that the blockchain revolution is going to be the golden parachute that gets her out of sex work. Ignoring the holes in her financial logic, the scene is a perfect encapsulation...

Bird Box: Barcelona, the NFL docuseries Quarterback, the third season of Sweet Magnolias and Jamie Foxx starrer They Cloned Tyrone are among the new projects debuting on Netflix in July
Bird Box: Barcelona is a Spanish-language spinoff of the 2018 Sandra Bullock-starring thriller. The film, written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, picks up after a mysterious force destroys Earth’s population and follows survivors as they seek to escape visible threats. The movie, which stars Mario Casas and Barbarian breakout Georgina Campbell, is meant to be the first of a series of films to expand the Bird Box universe.
The eight-episode Quarterback, Netflix’s first partnership with the NFL and produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, features unprecedented access to Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota both on and off the field during the 2022 season as the NFL allowed the quarterbacks to be mic’d up for every single game,...

It was supposed to usher in a great revival of movie-going, but as 2023 approaches its mid-point, the year has hosted more near-misses and outright disasters than genuine blockbusters.
Not that there aren’t things to celebrate. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” have generated massive business, the kind that would have been impressive in pre-covid times. And movies like “Cocaine Bear,” “Scream VI” and “Evil Dead Rise” have been solid mid-budget hits, selling tickets in the spring and winter months when cinemas are hustling to keep seats filled.
Overall, the domestic box office stands at $4.35 billion, a 20.7% improvement over where ticket sales clocked in at the same point in the pandemic-blighted 2022, according to Comscore. So things are getting better, and there are several promising films on the horizon such as “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Barbie” that could prove to be big summer hits.

For the first-time team-up between the Autobots and Maximals in the “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” prequel, director Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”) was given a lot of creative freedom in designing and animating the characters. Gone was Ilm from the previous six films, giving way to Mpc and Wētā FX. Mpc was the principal VFX studio and did all of the design work, but both had a hand in overhauling the Autobots and introducing the beast-like Maximals, which mix fur and flesh with their metal parts.
Production VFX supervisor Gary Brozenich (from Mpc) oversaw the work. After studying the previous films, he met with Caple to discuss his vision for tailoring the animation and also consulted with previous director Michael Bay (who still serves as producer). Rather than continuing to push the hyper-realism of the Bay films, Caple wanted to make them look more straightforward, with a nod toward...
