The game is infamous for its game over screen, which features an actual dead body. Based on the picture's date (8/6/1992), the body was speculated to be that of Polish boxer Leszek Blazynski (committed suicide on August 6, 1992), Palestine activist Atef Bseiso, or Egyptian author Farag Foda (both assassinated on June 8, 1992). It wasn't until 2019 that the picture was confirmed to be a still frame from the Japanese mondo film New Death File III. The body is of an unidentified civilian killed in 1992 during the Bosnian War, and appears at the 28:55 mark of the film.
For many years the game's background was a complete mystery. It wasn't until 2018 that Yoshihisa Kurosawa revealed himself as its creator. He had always wanted to be a game developer, but didn't like that the market was dominated by Nintendo and Sega with little room for independent developers. Thus, he intentionally conceived this game to be the worst of all time as a mockery to the industry. He worked on it with an Enix employee who could only spare two days on the project (Kurosawa said the final product was only "a 10th" of his full vision). It was distributed via floppy disk to be played on the Magicom, a backup device that allowed for homemade games to be played on the Super Famicom (or Super Nintendo elsewhere). Kurosawa could only promote the game under pseudonyms for underground gaming magazines since backup devices were illegal in Japan. He later explained, "The types of people who bought Super Famicom game copiers weren't the type to spend money on games, so it was like trying to sell something to a thief. So only a few people were willing to wire money to my shady PO box in Tokyo." He had several hundred copies printed, but only about 30 were sold. The rest were destroyed. He then forgot about the game until fans tracked him down on Facebook over a decade later and asked him questions. Only a handful of physical copies of the game have turned up.
By manually changing the score value via coding, players discovered that when you reach 1.2 billion kills (Chin's mission goal), the music stops.
The back of the game's insert notes that Chin is a heroin addict.
