I hope she's successful
angrickg16 June 2018
Trying to be unique, but she's too young to be able to bake without measuring. Have to go into Google to get the recipe which is annoying. She has a good programme though.

No recipes and many of the dishes make no sense
towtrip122 May 2019
Basically, this is a show where you are expected to watch a millennial look sexy while she cooks and eats. None of the dishes give any measurements for ingredients. None.

Also, there are some real head scratchers. "You won't even miss Alfredo sauce" for a sauce she makes using Parmesan cheese. Alfredo sauce is already vegetarian. The only advantage to using cashews for the base would be to make it vegan/dairy free, but then she adds cheese to it. Why?

Brownies that substitute almond milk for regular milk, but still contain eggs. What's the point. Brownies, too, are just regularly vegetarian. What's the point of the almond milk? How much cocoa powder? How much baking powder? How much oat flour? Who knows? She never tells you.

Then there's an annoying song that plays continually through the show.

It's a good show if you just want to watch someone going orgasmic over her own cooking, but not if you're wanting any information or vegetarian recipes.

Seriously??
njhomeowner11 October 2018
Why is there not a single measurement shared? The host does not state any quantities, nor are they displayed on the screen. Ridiculous. Why watch this show if you need to look up the recipes online anyway? There is too much flare and not enough facts. I don't need to see all those close-ups of her lipstick. Please give the recipes.

A connection with the audience is what she's missing
jlimtiaco-6941921 January 2019
I saw another review on here that she wrote scientific articles but she never mentions it, or anything about her personally either. I think it would benefit the show to have her connect with the audience, like most tv chefs and tell a story; I would have loved to hear some scientific things related to her articles, etc. because it tells me more about her. To the people who are mad she's not saying anything about measurements in her recipes, cooking sometimes doesn't have to be that way! I like that she's so carefree with her recipes and seems so unrestrained; it reminds me of the "a little bit of this, a little bit of that" recipes from our grandmothers. She seemed a little awkward at times, or like something was forced but I was watching her earlier episodes and whenever a tv chef first starts, they are always awkward so I can look past it.

Tap Water and Rice ... zzzzzzz
ironalley9516 September 2018
My problem is that your new show URBAN VEGETARIAN lacks anything and everything that a cooking show is all about. There was absolutely no introduction to the show, the "host" never once said her name, we found out absolutely nothing about her. The show came on and the host (which we finally found out her name about half-way through the show when a commercial came on advertising the show in the middle of the show) and she was juicing. Well, we ALL know how to juice vegetables as this has been part of most peoples lives for YEARS. She then taught us to make a dorm room burrito with store bought salsa. She proceeded to make a cake, which she didn't even say she was doing. She didn't give us any measurements ... just grind up a blender full of almonds, throw in an undefined amount of eggs, some honey and boom, you have a cake. She then put cream in a bowl and started to mix it ... how much cream? What are we making here? And why do we add the almond flavor at the end??? Oh, and put those gloves on before you cut your beet so you can "keep it classy". Why? Could she have let us know that beets stain? Hello, where is the INFORMATION? Ina Garten walks you through step by step and, like many of her colleagues who are chefs and cooks (which we never found out ANYTHING about the 'host') actually TEACH us something. Cauliflower pizza...how much of each ingredient? But she sure looked cute slowly sprinkling the ground cauliflower bits into the bowl! Nice touch on the store-bought tomato sauce, too. This show was extremely disappointing and Desiree Nielson is both as exciting as "tap water and rice", but she is so very in love with herself and it comes through when she laughs so lovingly at her own jokes (..."win win"... "hahahaha"). Ugh. Rolling my eyes! There was no intro to the show, we found out absolutely nothing about the host - not even her name except for the commercial). Is she a chef? A mom? Where does she live? What is her background? How did she find herself having a show on television? AND WHY? She didn't "cook" anything. Everything was something my college age son would make in a dorm room. I learned absolutely nothing - EXCEPT FOR the Canadian DAIRY COUNSEL must be a sponsor because she cooked with and ate enough cheese to stop up a sumo wrestler for a week! I give this show 1/2 star out of 10, and that is being OVERLY GENEROUS. SHOUT OUT TO SPENCER WATT for being the most entertaining host/show on Zliving!

I want to be a vegetarian!
ltcongello28 December 2020
I LOVE this show! And I'm not even close to being a vegetarian. She makes being a vegetarian fun and daring. I appreciate how she simply explains tips, instructions, or backgrounds of certain foods. She is a joy to watch and the show is pleasing all around.

Bland beyond belief
grahame_g_h28 June 2019
I really wanted to love this show but the food is unbelievably dull . I have been vegetarian for 10 years ( this time around) and am staggered that a show this banal has gone beyond YouTube. There are so many vibrant vegetarian and vegan presenters out there ( Isa Chandra Moskowitz for example), this is a complete waste of time.

CHILL PEOPLE, CHILL!

Ok. I haven't been watching long, nor regularly. I just happened upon this show and I love it! People who made the most ridiculous and hateful comments on here obviously don't seem to get the point of the show. Only after w watching a few episodes, it seems perfectly CLEAR to me that the point is you don't need specific recipes! If you can't tell by the video what a "handful", or "pinch" is, then maybe you shouldn't be cooking at all. The show seems to show that eating vegetarian can be easy, convenient, simple.... Even in our urban-minded society (hence the "urban vegetarian" title). Just saying.

BRAVO! I really like the style of the show; keep it up.

Not a fan to say the least!!! "
beatrizherrmann31 October 2018
Doesn't he knows about the horrors of the Dairy farm industry?? She's good for a one day cooking show in a mall. I cook for 30 years Vegan and I have more imagination and skills. She's always hunched and please get rid of those glasses!!!! I know is not about looks but if we have to look at the screen for 30 minutes. Those humongous glasses get all the attention Furthermore, she doesn't seem to have the skills in the kitchen or with knives... I understand that she's starting but for god sake do something.. And try to avoid so much cheese, eggs, and milk DAIRY IS WRONG AND BAD FOR YOU!!!.... The only thing I like about the show is that as a step forward shying away from meat but it doesn't get close to be a healthy compassionate cooking show!.. May e for someone that is her or his ver first day in the Kitchen...

Needed ideas....
deesirius8 March 2023
To make veggie meals for my vegetarian partner... came across this show but i find completely unwatchable because of this host. But im admittedly and absolute hater when it comes to this host.

I get that she doesnt measure anything which is fine...but atleast mention all your ingredients?? Seems like the least she can do??? Even Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentis make an effort (and they give you their measurements).

This host is a complete try hard. I almost kept watching to see what other dumb things she was gonna say and do to make herself more relatable. How did this person get her own show? Who thought "wow! These are great recipes! Give her, her own show!» hopefully this gets discontinued and someone else whose better can take her place.

Absolutely horrible
mrsjakoftrades31 March 2020
This is the worst cooking show ever! The host is the most annoying person EVER! She comes across as a complete idiot! She's ugly which makes it so hard to actually watch. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard or a dying cat! There's no measurements of ingredients no actual recipes! Completely annoying. Not a good rule model. Never washes her hands!! Its banned and blocked in my house. It would be zero stars but they don't have that option!

So Boring
tdglee10 August 2020
This lady is so boring, and her recipes are boring. She doesn't give recipes, make stupid substitutions, makes the most season less food I've ever seen. Thank goodness we have Spencer Watts for entertainment and being an awesome chef.

i find her fascinating even captivating - great show - great food
drjoenymets20 April 2020
Refreshing. Not only pretty but smart. The at home closet garden is genius. Now to the few who "don't get her" and I am 62 now, she is a genius at what she does. Who wouldn't want to be with a girl who can whip up dishes like this. This girl knows not only what is good for you, but how to take care of herself, and live well. The food is decadently good yet healthy. I have made them at home. As to those who cannot follow her recipes watch, pause, write down, observe, do. Pretty easy. What is not to love, Desiree you go girl, take of one e from your first name, and like food you were born to teach us. especially the neandrathals. Vancouver, Canada rocks. Romantic place. thanks for sharing and being who you are.

Good food ideas, but super annoying host....
jshane731 December 2019
What makes this a one star show is that the host is so incredibly annoying. She is trying so hard to be animated that she ends up just being over-the-top annoying. It's the the hosts annoying personality that makes this unwatchable. With a big, stupid, over-the-top smile on her face the host constantly says things like:

"I don't know if melty is technically a flavor, but these are going to taste melty"

PS: Lisa Loeb called,.....she wants her look back!

Ignore Hangry People - Blood Sugar is Low
ldvenado9 November 2018
I absolutely love the show and love Desiree. I've read some of her more scientific articles and they're extremely informative and articulate. I'm not a vegetarian but Desiree makes me want to be. She's joyful and calming in her demeanor and illustrates the ease at which you can cook simply and without measurements - I'm actually fascinated by the approach and how easy it all is. I find her humorous and sweet as that beet colored cream cheese frosting! And I'm crazy about Spencer too. Chris Knight - you've got it right!

No value!!
shamlan-791254 November 2020
As a vegetarian I was thoroughly excited to watch this but gave up after 2 episodes. She shares no quantities...and at times does not even mention what ingredients are going into the dish. Her combinations just dont look that appetizing and rather bland. Shes clearly not a chef as no skills come through on this show. I found no value ..i
