Sex & Nudity

  • One of Mario's unlockable costumes depicts him wearing nothing but a pair of mushroom-themed boxers. He is shirtless while wearing them, and his nipples are showing. However as it's just a cosmetic change, NPCs with the acceptation of Luigi and Bowser, who deem the costume to be a bit scary, react to Mario as they normally do. (The costume itself based on an image of Mario relaxing on the beach posted by Nintendo in the summer of 2016, so it can be assumed the boxers are swimming trunks.)
  • In the Lake Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom, Princess Peach is seen wearing a bikini. She only appears after you beat the story mode.

Violence & Gore

  • Mario can jump on people's heads and you can hit people with Cappy. You can also "CAP-ture" some few people. Mild Cartoon Violence.
  • Mario could possess a Tank in Metro Kingdom and can shoot out canons destroying signs, taxis, the lights inside buildings, and more destruction. Cartoon Violence.
  • As players run and jump through themed 3-D environments, they can hop on enemie's heads and/or use a cap to defeat them. Most chachers react to damage with blinking affects, comical yells, cowering gestures, or by turning into coins. During one boss encounter, players can CAP-ture a "cartoony" tank and fire cannonballs at a mechanical boss; large explostions are dipicted as it is defeated. In another sequence, Mario lands seval punches against a boss chacher; action is highlighted by impact sounds and screen-shaking effects. In a lunch themed level, a giant bird spits pink soup (and other food items) twords the player.
  • No "blood and gore" scenes.

Profanity

  • Contains no coarse language whatsoever.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The Ruined Dragon could be frightening for some young players.
  • The Unagis (now called Maw Rays) have a more detailed appearance and may be frightening to some players who grew up with Super Mario 64. In addition, some enemies, such as these mentioned before and especially Bowser, now appear more detailed than before and this could scare some. It doesn't help either that this game has highly realistic and detailed graphics which, while really gorgeous to look at, enhance the realism of the entire game.
  • Easily the darkest Mario game ever made by Nintendo. Due to this, the game receives an E10+ rating.
  • Mario can be chased by dinosaurs. (May be terrifying to young players.)
  • Mario's first arrival in the Metro Kingdom/New Donk City takes a remarkably dark turn for a Mario title; the city is under siege by sentient tanks and numerous maggots that swifty change into hideous furry flies that attack Mario with high speed strikes, all during a dark and stormy night.
  • Bonneton, the Cap Kingdom, is an oddly dark place given the nature of the Mario series; gloomy, fog-ridden, populated by odd ghost figures and with a bleak film noir-ish city skyline in the distance. The kingdom's background music is just as mysterious and foreboding, feeling like a piece out of a Tim Burton film.
