A Manny-Splendored Thing (#2.2)

This was also a great episode. Somehow I don't get Kate. She seemed so incredibly childish. At the same time young Kate was incredibly mature when being supportive of her dad. I actually like teenage Kate actress, she definitely has talent. The best part of the episode was Randall and Beth story. The doubts about fostering an older kid were so well presented. And Beth's conversation with Kevin finding out how Randall used him to help get her was so great.

Hard Issues

Lets face it, when it comes to family dynamics, simple logic can go out the window. Kate's adult relationship with her mother is so tense. She wants so badly to be praised for something without conditions. Even though Rebecca's comments seem benign, Kate has so little self esteem. I remember my father giving me a job to do when I was twelve. I threw myself into it with no goofing around and I felt such accomplishment. When my Dad saw what I had done he praised me, but then told me three things I could have done better. It was so hurtful. I think this is Kate's issue. The other things that were interesting were Kevin's embarrassing reboot of the Mannie. And, of course, the Randall/Beth story and Kevin's role in it. We also see Jack's recognition of his drinking issues.

Kate is such a spoiled brat

Warning: Spoilers
I'm late to this show, so I'm sorry if a lot of this has already been discussed and I'm hoping she later has a redemption arc... but as of right now I can't stand Kate. She faults her mom for existing... EXISTING! Seriously woman... get some help. I get that she has low self esteem due to society's views of weight and that can be really rough... but yeesh... she's 37... it's way past time to take some responsibility for your own issues instead of blaming someone who's loved and supported you your whole life. Most of us yearn for even a scrap of that love.

Onto something else, even though it's obvious that Toby agrees with Rebecca, I still like the fact that he is Team Kate. That's what ya gotta do in a marriage with the in-laws.

Anyhow, I do like most of the storylines on this show. Poor Kevin with the Manny... that was well done. It's showing Kevin's growth and maturity.

Randall and his wife are still my favorites. I adore them and their acting. I'm going to continue watching, but may start fast-forwarding the Kate scenes.
