This Is What Quality TV Looks Like In Every Possible Way

Sometimes an event occurs that when it is over, you just sit there dazed in amazement. This episode "Songbird Road: Part One" is one such event. Often TV shows will rely on sex or violence to boost ratings. But "This Is Us" takes a different approach by creatively weaving a story of a family through the decades and then telling that story from the perspective of different family members from their life lens as children and then as adults.

This episode is the epitome of outstanding story-telling. The story is excellently told using different time lines, amazing acting (even secondary characters), perfect scripting, and phenomenal camera work. Yes, the adjectives are appropriate!

If you want a lot of action, if you want laugh tracks and silly comedy, if you want blood or thrills, this series and this episode are not for you. But if you value a powerful drama that displays the human condition in its natural form.... with the struggles, emotions, achievements, failures and victories.... then you will not find a better series anywhere. This episode "Songbird Road: Part One" is the Mount Everest of TV drama. It is hard to imagine that any TV drama could be any better than what was shown and achieved in this particular episode!

Songbird Road: Part One (#3.11)

Warning: Spoilers
A powerful episode. It is told so well. We got to see that tragedy that happened in Vietnam and after than one's heart is just breaking for Nicky because he never got to tell his brother it was an accident. I wonder why he did't write it in his letters. I guess it was just something he wanted to tell in person and Jack didn't let him. How sad, what a mistake he made, losing his brother this way and have him live isolated and in pain. I am glad Kevin decided not to do the same. The acting was wonderful. Both Michael Angarano and Griffin Dunne did a great job as Nick Pearson. And it was such a good casting I thought it was the same person with make up at some point.

I Never Got To Tell Him

*wipes tears* My eyes are still watering from that episode. What an amazing performance from the actors especially Jack, Nicholas, Kevin and Rebecca. The stand outs from the episode. The flashbacks especially the Vietnam one tie up the previous Vietnam storyline so beautifully and emotional you just want to go to Jack, listen to him. You feel the pain coming from Nicholas especially finding out what happened to Jack. At the end I was like wanting more and to know this is part 1. I will definitely need tissues for the next part. I've been hanging on the fence with some episodes of the show but this episode powerful!

Phenomenal

Twisty, surprising, and emotional, Songbird Road: Part One is probably the best episode yet of season 3. Unlike some episodes of season 3, which have felt forced at times, the emotion that is emitted from this one is so naturally poignant. From the directing to the acting and even to the editing, this episode was just impeccable. If you haven't watched yet, be ready with tissues and your full attention. Bring on part 2! 10/10

Such an incredible TV show!

I started watching this on the recommendation of a friend. She raved about the show. I started watching, and was instantly hooked. The cast is amazing! The storylines are by turn, funny, emotional, sad, and deeply satisfying. I am thoroughly engaged with each and every episode. Be prepared to shed some tears, because there are some gut and heart wrenching moments. I love the story of Jack and Rebecca, and how it unfolds over the course of the show. The characters are very real, and the love stories are very much on target. Not everyone is perfect, which is why it is so satisfying. Characters fall down, then get themselves back up. All in all, very much worth watching. I can't wait for the next episodes to air.

Hard to Review Half

Warning: Spoilers
I hope I don't accidentally overlap Part One to Part Two. This is a bout Nicky and what happened in Vietnam. Jack is aware all along that his brother is alive. He had done everything he could to get him straightened out, but he was so damaged. What Jack saw was unforgivable in his eyes, but he didn't know the whole story. Nicky, in one of his drug induced stupors, is approached by a little village boy. He decides to take him "fishing." Nicky has a satchel full of hand grenades. He and the boy are in a boat. Nicky pulls the pin on a grenade, drops it in the water, there is an underwater explosion, and the stunned fish rise to the top. But the boy, not understanding the realities of a grenade, inadvertently causes an explosion on the boat, killing him as Nicky jumps overboard. Nicky has carried this around with him. Jack never allowed him to explain. Nicky now lives in dumpy RV in the woods. He is 70 and still drinking. He met with Jack once, but Jack refused to listen to him. We see this from two perspectives. Masterful filmmaking.

Nothing in this episode is done well. From the accident to the characters motivations, nothibg makes sense. Almost unwatchable.

This nicky part kept me hanging in this series and engaging. I am so curios about him and Jack about war as like as Jack death. Really very good episode. This series is amazing some of this series part may be boring but cliff hanger point like this really made me stick to this series i wish there are more like this.
