Nevertheless, last year saw a 57.1% drop in admissions, according to figures published by the association Film & Kino. The Oslo-based cinema association Film & Kino has published the figures for the country’s 2020 box office. Despite a significant drop in cinemagoing (-57.1% admissions), caused by the shutdown of the cinemas between March and May and the newly enforced restrictions throughout the year, domestic titles secured an historic 35.6% market share, beating the previous record figure from 2018 (25.1%). Overall, the 2020 national box office totalled 4.8 million admissions (as against 11.3 million in 2019) and made a profit of 557,743,079 Norwegian crowns. In detail, the highest-grossing title of the year was Hallvard Bræin’s Asphalt Burning, distributed by the Norwegian division of Sf Studios and released in October. The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Every weekend a slew of new titles arrive across the various streaming services to satiate the millions of subscribers around the world who can’t seem to decide on what to watch, but things are a little different this week with Christmas Day falling on a Friday. That means a lot of food and alcohol-related hangovers and a general sense of laziness and malaise, so comfort eating and viewing will be the go-to options for a lot of folks over the next three days.
There are some heavy hitters coming to the multitude of platforms, too, with the Dceu’s blockbuster comic book sequel Wonder Woman 1984 and Pixar’s latest animation Soul arriving on HBO Max and Disney Plus respectively. Those two titles are guaranteed to dominate both the most-watched list and the conversation, but there are more than a few others that are definitely worth a watch, and you...

As we head closer to Christmas, now’s a good time to catch up on your Netflix viewing, and the platform have a lot of new movies and shows coming this week. Highlights include original features like The Midnight Sky, as well as drama Bridgerton, and fresh seasons of returning family series. Indeed, given the amount of content already added to the service this December, it shouldn’t be difficult to find something to watch over the holidays.
In terms of original films, the George Clooney-directed The Midnight Sky provides a timely story of an Arctic scientist trying to contact a team of astronauts before they return to a worldwide catastrophe. Based on a novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton, the cast also includes the likes of Felicity Jones and Kyle Chandler. Additionally, we’ll be getting the LGBT-themed Taiwanese picture Your Name Engraved Herein, Norwegian comedy sequel Asphalt Burning (Børning 3), and French production DNA.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

"Drive for love, Roy! Drive for love!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an action comedy film from Norway titled Asphalt Burning, which is the new English release title. This is actually the third movie in an action comedy, high octane car racing franchise from Norway called Børning - the first one (Borning: The Fast & The Funniest) opened in 2014, followed by Børning 2 in 2016. When the brakes slam on his wedding, Roy (the main character from all the Børning films - played by Anders Baasmo Christiansen) accepts a challenge from a new foe to race for his own runaway bride at the iconic Nürburgring track in Germany. "Børning 3 is mainly set in Germany, still focusing on car racing – high speed, fierce competition, with an exciting confrontation at the famous race track." Also starring Kathrine Thorborg Johansen, Ida Husøy, Otto Jespersen, Sven Nordin, and Trond Halbo. This looks like good-hearted racing fun.

We’ve only got a few weeks left of 2020, so we might as well start looking ahead to 2021. When it comes to new arrivals dropping on Netflix in January, it’s too early to get our hands on a full list at this stage, but a small amount of titles have already been announced, including a bunch of newly licensed movies that’ll be added on the first of the month as well as a couple of much-anticipated originals that are on the way throughout the rest of January.
