The Asylum: Very enjoyable effort
Platypuschow18 February 2018
Found footage is one of those badly overplayed genres that I've simply lost all faith in. Each time it's essentially the same movie and it needs to stop.

For this reason going into The Asylum I expected the worst, doubly so due to the fact it's yet another one of them set in a mental institution. Triply so because there are a good 50 other titles called The Asylum.

Standing at around the 40 minute mark it tells the story of three friends who are suspicious as to why an abandoned asylum is guarded so vigorously by the government. They learn there is a hole that will lead them into tunnels beneath the asylum and set about investigating.

Thankfully you don't have all the usual tropes here, no night vision, no stupidity when it comes to justifying why they're still recording and no shaky cam and screaming.

It's a neat atmospheric claustophobic tale that managed to entertain and showcases the movies creators abilities.

More of this please.

The Good:

Tension is built perfectly

Well constructed

Doesn't fall into the usual found footage pitfalls

The Bad:

Ending perhaps could have been a tad better

Things I Learnt From This Movie:
