Though the song served as the theme song for Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995), the video featured the characters Jesse and Elvis portrayed by its respective actors Jason James Richter and Francis Capra. The storyboard version originally included a scene where Jesse starts daydreaming intercut with footage from Free Willy 2.
Jackson said this was one of the realest and most heartfelt songs he ever wrote because he has explained multiple times on how he didn't have a childhood and wished on how he could be a child again. With doing so to compensate for his lost childhood he built his home and called it neverland as a reference to Peter Pan the boy who never grew up and was surrounded by magic, Michael would later build theme park rides in his home and statues pertaining to this.
