Parts of the filming took place at McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey. Some of the extras are actually McLaren employees.
Based on the short story "Sales Pitch" by Philip K. Dick.
This episode contains multiple references to the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, and particularly founding member Syd Barrett, who was forced out of the band in 1968 due to mental instability and erratic behavior:
- Barrett's 1970 composition "Octopus" is featured in the episode. A cover version is played several times, and Ed sings a bit of it a cappella.
- Noah refers to Ed as "Mr Barrett", then "Syd", clear references to Syd Barrett.
- the title of the episode is a reference to the 1975 Pink Floyd song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", which was largely a tribute to Syd.
- when Sally is speaking to Su, the pig-faced security guard, sheep can be prominently heard (and briefly seen) in the background. Sheep and Pigs are references to the 1977 Pink Floyd album "Animals".
