Team Free-Will 2.0
bvnisarga17 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Castiel is back (Woohoo!!!)and Dean is naturally happy. He got a win, a big win which he desperately needed. There is a big reunion and the formation of a new team i.e Team Free-will 2.0. The monster of the week is average, considering the focus is on the guys. We get to see Team 2.0 in action and they don't disappoint. It is great to see Dean and Cass together again, Sharing many funny moments with Castiel being his usual quirky self. What is also refreshing to see is the relationship between Jack and Castiel. All in all a good episode.

I wished the show did more "Westerns"
CubsandCulture16 July 2021
Occasionally Supernatural would throw a Western inspired episode into the mix. I.e. Frontierland from season 6, Dead Man's Blood in season 1. Etc. This is another episode in that vein and like the others it is a strong episode in large part because Dean's love for cowboys is infectious. Add in a good use of ghoul and a revenge subplot and this is a fun hour.

Looks like the studio's finally cluing in.

The staggering ratings recovery of this episode spoke for itself. Mostly a few ornery folks that sustain off of only breathing Jared and Jensen's hair complain, because the network has been making great use of its extended cast. Hell, they're just internationally on WB advertising this as "Destiel." And I mean, let's face it, this entire episode was one giant love letter to the Destiel fandom, and it's about time.

Davy Perez hit it off again, despite the hatred he was receiving from antis before the episode ever aired. His experience in the western genre shined, his standard time-skip narrative took hold immediately, and it just read "DAVY PEREZ" in screaming font to anyone that follows production edges. He captured characters wonderfully, brought life back to the characters that were beaten under the full-mope bus for the last few seasons, threw us a fun case and ultimately, this episode friggin /shined./ Good humor, great thematic music, MOTW including the others, and a real development twist still at the end chaining us into the rest of the season. It's great to see Dean /smiling/ again. Not just smiling - wooping and hooping and hollering, "HEYOOOOO."

That's my opinion of this episode: HEYOOOOO.

For the first time, I'm flirting with the idea that it may be time to bring Supernatural to a close
rjg-3135619 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The first ten minutes are fairly standard 'Supernatural,' with Dean getting his cowboy fetish on. The Dean Western fantasy has been done to perfection when he went back in time to kill a Phoenix (Frontierland). This time it comes across as lame. Dean is looking and acting very tired and old. So is Cas. Missing from this episode are authentic emotions and dialogue which translates into a complete lack of enthusiasm by the cast. Starting with the scene where Dean plants his cowboy boots on the ground emerging from Baby to 'Space Cowboy,' the episode temporarily morphs into a travesty that is NOT Supernatural. It's trying very hard to be something else…..what? Space cowboy? Really?!!! There were scenes that I could barely stand to watch, it was so embarrassing. To make matters worse, the writers rip off the Goth girl from NCIS. I did love the scene with Dean staring down into a deep hole, exclaiming "Hell!" and realizing that he doesn't have anyone to do 'rock/paper/scissors/' with. No, he HAS to go down that hole. The bank robbery scenes are a little better, with Jack learning that using his powers can result in collateral damage that Cas, surprisingly, can't make better. Strangely, Sam and Dean have lost their usual remarkable shooting skills, which is just stupid. Think of 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid,' where Dean kills at least a dozen zombies with blazingly accurate head shots. What happened? This show needs to stick to its roots, but stop with the same old jokes that are worn out. Watching this episode on line at the CW website made this episode even more disappointing due to their aggravating video player that ALWAYS freezes.

Too goofy and Jack is hard to connect to
shwetafabm31 July 2020
I love goofy eps, this felt weird, like some brady bunch forced stuff, how is Jack so attached to them by this point... It feels not properly developed. The overall plot is just not there.
