Sleeping Draught

The final episode throws light on the series of events leading up to the fall but it took its time in getting there. The story could basically have been told in an hour but was dragged out over 6 episodes.

I may rewatch if i ever suffer from insomnia.

Disappointing Harlan Coben style melodrama
JRB-NorthernSoul7 November 2021
Adapted from a Kindle bestseller it tells the story of a woman recovering from a mystery fall which leaves her without memory of the last year or so. She has to try and work out what has happened in that missing period.

Pros - a good performance from Connie Nielsen in the lead role, fairly well made and watchable and a plotline with a lots of twists and surprises.

Cons - some wobbly and stilted direction and clunky dialogue (the interior monologue device didn't work for me at all). Sadly it got a bit daft and was a couple of episodes too long for its story.

Verdict: there's a lot of better dramas out there, it felt like style over substance and by the end I'd lost interest. Average.

A great series but a terribly dull end
James_Denton20 November 2021
We thoroughly enjoyed the series and were left guessing until the end, expecting a fantastic twist or big 'reveal', but disappointingly the end was much duller than we expected.

Unfortunately, the '8' we would have given the series has been reduced to a 6 because of this.

Drawn out and every last drop milked.
andy-168-5355514 December 2021
I enjoy slow burn drama but this was excruciatingly dragged out. The characters never really took off - especially Christopher Eccleston's part - he seemed awkward and wooden, not helped by the uninspired writing. At most this is a four part, even three part drama. Consequently it was diluted and not in the slightest bit compelling - which is a crying shame because the synopsis and setting had great potential.

Ecclestone is always great. Enjoyed this show. Stunning visuals. Well directed. Intelligently written.

Waaaay to long
simon196321 December 2021
Just enough in each episode to get you wanting to watch the next one. Just.

Very repetitive, average to poor acting from everyone, but great to see a cameo appearance from Russell Brand, oh sorry, Nick Blood.

Far too long, as others have said, it was a three-parter at best. It DID have a sort of 'proper' ending, but by part 6, who cared really?!

Gripping who dunnit.

Interesting so many bad reviews on here. Definitely seems polarising and not usually my thing to seek out but was pleasantly surprised.

In many ways it was reminiscent of Girl on a Train and Momento.

Jo has a memory gap from her fall down the stairs and her phone is missing. Her husband seems caring but also volatile. From the outset it feels like half truths are being told and then the dreams and flashbacks start shortly followers by hallucinations. What is real? What isn't? How did she end up badly injured at the bottom of the stairs? The outcome however is a little predictable and some of the characters are cringe worthy. Could have easily have been two episodes shorter without missing much. Overall, if you're stuck in isolation with nothing else more pressing, it's worth a binge.

Meh
djwmedia2 December 2021
Don't waste your time with this 6 hours that could have been told in 1 or 2. Not a bad story and a bit different, but the two main characters are both annoying and I struggled to like either of them.

Stick with it, it ends better than it starts.
Sleepin_Dragon19 December 2021
Jo seems to have it all, a loving family, a great home, success, one thing she's missing however, her memory, after waking up from a fall, she's missing the last year of memories.

It gets off to a pretty frustrating start, the early episodes are pretty slow, and padded, but my advice is stick with it, from part 4 onwards, it goes up a few gears, it becomes way more intense and a lot more engaging, the last two episodes I thought were excellent.

It's a good old fashioned mystery, you'll have to put the pieces of the jigsaw together, it's very satisfying when it call comes together.

It is beautifully filmed and shot, it looks and sounds awesome, superbly produced. The best element for me, the acting, what a terrific cast, each person gets their chance to shine, and they do.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, 8/10.

Very well written amnesia drama
CrazyArty21 December 2021
A woman wakes at the bottom of her staircase badly bleeding and bruised. Rushed to hospital she suffers from amnesia and on recovering she tries to figure out what has been happening in her life. Her life was far from perfect.

Stars Connie Nielsen and Christopher Eccleston.

Engaging mystery drama where the viewer uncovers the story alongside the protagonist.

I mostly enjoyed this. Connie Nielsen does a good enough job and the story moves along nicely with lots of twists and turns as her memories return. It's well written and I like that you get to see and understand more than one perspective.

My main complaint is that the story drags a bit particularly towards the end, when the story is largely explained. This could have been told in probably 4 episodes. I really didn't really like the ending, the big reveal was not so big by then.

Dreary dull 6 hours worth
omendata11 December 2021
I just ifnished watching 6 hours of this and hoping with each episode for some real drama and excitement and what did we get?

A very limp drama with no surprises and a lacklustre and unsurprising zero twist in the tale ending.

Ecclestone weak and woefully miscast and just a waste of those 6 hours for zero payoff - If this is the standard; and it seems like it is, of British Drama these days, then we had maybe better just stop making it!

Good thriller with some new themes/aspects
Jingleling13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sad to see that the rating so far is not higher. I do not agree with some of the reviews in here saying it has a simplistic portrayal of men and women (being all bad/good.)

This is a major spoiler but to get to the heart of it: Rob (especially because of the ep. Showing his point of view) was portrayed in a nuanced way and I really felt a lot of sympathy for him. I understood why he cheated but the main lesson, as I see it, was that he (and her father) tried to kill their spouse. That is a very extreme thing to do and therefore not something you can recover from as a couple (or in any kind of relation.) I think they show the effect of such an action really well (also how it had affected her as a child witnessing that, ex hurting herself afterwards.) And it should make the audience wonder why.. why did he feel entitled to do that?

But of course there is a lot more to the show than that, so it would be a shame reducing it to that.. the tension, build up, drama etc worked really well overall. And I liked getting some new insights into head trauma, dementia, menopause, grieving a child and couples at this stage in life. There are several nice men in the show, not-so-nice women, and the main characters being both bad and good at different times (like real human beings.) It's up there with some of the really good British dramas so I hope people will give it a shot despite the rating.

Dreary
dave-ditchburn18 November 2021
Tries to be moody and atmospheric. Misses it by a country mile. An episode could be summarised in a 5 minute short film and even then would leave you thinking so what.

Started of good, then got bad
CharlieSilver198021 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Really did not like the main characters. The woman is hysterical, crying, screaming, over dramatical. The husband seems mean, but his wife is impossible to live with. The only thing I felt really sad about was the dog dying.

Wanting answers but never listening
laurabadcock-562838 January 2022
This show could be amazing. Acting is great per usual with the actors, but the writing in parts makes no sense. The main character who lost her memory, literally runs away or tells people to go away when they are trying to discuss her past with her; which would give her answers. It makes no sense. It makes for a very frustrating watch.

... a story didn't require length of two movies to tell it
bjarias17 February 2024
... have seen Connie Nielsen in a bunch of works and she's always been good... this production was overall just okay... slow-confusion-phony in several-spots yet overall somewhat worth the time viewing... now in her mid-fifty's she still remains very attractive-alluring, helping carry this production along its shaky path

... casting-misstep-exception to it all is Eccleston... he just does not work-fit-in along w-either of these two women... w/o him in with-them is one feeling, then he comes onscreen and entire dynamic changes instantly... wrong for the part, his acting wrong for the character... in other productions he's been above average... this performance-role here just misses-the-mark-entirely... having-requiring-asking is it the-actor or the-direction that's amiss

... ending's especially messy, script and acting dropping the production down at least another notch possibly two... stars being-as EP's not always valuable to the work.

Imagine 'Momento' but with no plot twists
paul2001sw-113 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A woman wakes up with amnesisa having fallen down the stairs. Could her defensive, inadequate, control-freak of a husband have had anything to do with it? Unsurprisingly, in 'Close to Me', the answer turns out to be "yes". But it's a strange sort of drama, in which the truth is clearly suspected before it is revealed to either character or viewer. Amnesia opens many opportunities to tell intriguing (albeit preposterous stories): just think of 'Momento'. But there are no real twists here, just one long painful reveal.

exciting!
sapell-571803 October 2021
Well rounded exploration of women of a certain age. Really enjoyed - gripping storyline and the acting was extremely good. I've read the book and this version is a very interesting take on it. Quite different, but the issues explored are still relevant to today! Recommended and well worth a watch for all.

Decent enough series
battse25 December 2021
Enjoyed the series overall however a little slow in parts. Could/should have been a four parter.

Interesting mini twists and a reasonable ending However, the sudden changes of the bruising on Jo's face is a medical mystery that needs to be investigated by The Lancet.

An example of how to do it badly.
yannisroussos14 November 2021
Weak story. Bad casting. Unbelievable events. Boring long takes. Clumsy editing. Badly acted. After 2 disappointing episodes we checked out the ending but shouldn't have bothered. Avoid.

Touching and moving, you won't guess the plot
niksnaks118 September 2021
The rating is too low, I think this is one of the best mini series I've ever seen.

You never guess what is the final outcome, the story keeps you in it's grip until the very end.

Beautiful imagery, the way some moments are filmed.

Excellent drama.

Not bad, not brilliant
sue-webb30 January 2022
Maybe I move in the wrong circles, but I don't know any family that swears as much as that one. Got on my nerves after a while. The plot started off well, but missed the mark. I haven't read the book so I don't know if it was true to the original story.

Too Long!
susanxx-76-34857330 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Far too long and drawn out. The leads have as much charm as a loaf of mouldy bread and no one in their right mind would even remotely think of having an affair with Christopher Eccelston. The story jumps around like a frog trapped in a plastic bag and you cannot connect with any of these disjointed people.
