One of the things that makes mystery and crime TV series so popular is the way the viewer usually solves the same mysteries that the main character does. Those who have watched through all the possible shows within this realm set in the modern day may want to take on yet another challenge and try to solve the crimes without having access to all the technology.
With no databases of DNA samples, no cell phone tracking and no Internet available for quick research, the detectives of the past centuries had to rely only on their deductive and interrogation skills to catch the criminals. Here are 8 shows with the best depictions of such work.

The gun rings out, the character drops to the floor – another mystery procedural has begun! TV sleuths have 60 minutes (at least!) to figure out whodunnit. To Jacob Coakley and Jessica Hird, co-hosts of the Cluedunnit podcast, that seems like entirely too much time. On each episode of their comedy TV rewatch podcast Cluedunnit, they immediately guess the perp before there are any commercials – or clues.
“Every mystery starts a new game,” says Hird. “Of all the various suspects, who do you bet on? Guy-With-a-Mustache? Lady Germaphobe? Or Sexy-Stranger-With-The-Menacing-Stare?”
“Mystery novels were originally called ‘The Grandest Game’ by mystery author John Dickson Carr,” adds Coakley. “He argued that a good detective story was a hoodwinking contest, a duel between author and reader. Well, in any duel it’s always best to shoot first. So we go off half-cocked, making the best guesses we can, as soon as we can. Of course,...

Ever since she was a child, Frankie thought her father died in an alley under suspicious circumstances. But in what turned out to be Ovation TV’s series finale of Frankie Drake Mysteries, the ace private detective finally learned the truth.
The revelation began on Saturday’s installment when Jack, Frankie’s younger half-brother, appeared at her office with a newspaper article that featured a man who looked a lot like their dearly departed dad — except very much alive. Confused by the news, Frankie reached out to one of the witnesses who said he saw Ned Drake get murdered. Sadly,...

All eyes will be on the Canadian TV industry over the next month as major players such as public broadcaster CBC, Bell Media, Rogers and Corus unveil their 2021-22 upfront plans. But this year, in the wake of heavy hitters like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Kim’s Convenience” coming to an end, the pressure for networks to find the next global-facing series is palpable.
Upfront season follows one of the most tumultuous years for Canadian television in recent memory. In September, the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” made history at the Emmys by sweeping all major comedy categories, solidifying its place as one of the most successful CBC shows of all time.
Three months later, the public broadcaster was on its knees as allegations that filmmaker Michelle Latimer, the producer and director of one of its most exciting new offerings, “Trickster,” was not of Indigenous descent, as she had claimed. The series,...

To hear numerous distribution executives tell it, the international TV program sales market has successfully adapted to online dealmaking. Despite being unable to meet buyers in person over the past 12 months at markets including this month’s MipTV, most distributors say business has been good.
“We’re still getting the same prices for our shows, and buyers still want quality programs,” says Sarah Tong, director of sales at Hat Trick Intl., whose slate includes feature doc “Janis and Lucy,” about a chimp raised as a human, that has pre-sold to HBO Max for the U.S.
Meanwhile, Nicky Davies Williams, CEO of Dcd Rights, which reps dramas “My Life Is Murder” and “Frankie Drake Mysteries,” points in particular to the “enormous increase in demand” from both SVOD and AVOD services.
Both buyers and sellers pivoted quickly to platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams as lockdowns first hit in 2020. Now,...

Masterpiece Mystery’s latest offering, Miss Scarlet and the Duke, gives viewers a taste of the darker side of Victorian London and a bold woman detective to root for. The show produced by A+E International along with Alibi UK became a cult hit last summer in the UK. Once fans get past the elements that break with the period mystery tradition, they will be rewarded with compelling mysteries and plots that challenge gender norms.

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

Summer is usually the time for tea of the iced variety, but if one is into cozy murder mysteries, a warm cuppa will do just as well to accompany the influx of detective shows from overseas or across the border. “Frankie Drake Mysteries” arrives on Ovation’s shores by way of Canada this Saturday, and it’s the entertaining but not overly taxing fare that is best consumed during these warmer months.
