Once upon a time, a bunch of disgustingly wealthy entertainment executives got together with a dream — a dream that answers the question, "What if people consumed film and TV in short segments like a TikTok playlist, but on a brand new platform that no one is going to pay to use with a bananas ridiculous name?" The result was Quibi, a short-form streaming platform that went as quickly as it came, shutting down after only seven months of operation and hemorrhaging over a billion dollars from investors.
The downfall of Quibi rivals that of fellow colossal "good idea on paper but never gonna happen in execution" entertainment failure, MoviePass, but came with the depressing caveat that Quibi actually produced a huge chunk of *content* that was now at risk of being drop-kicked into the unstreamable void of tax write-off and nothingness unless other platforms stepped in to save them. This post contains spoilers for the "Resident Evil" film franchise.
Umbrella Corporation. The name will forever be associated with unsavory, downright evil acts within the "Resident Evil" universe, catalyzing the events that define the franchise. Although Capcom's "Resident Evil" games have their own set of canonical events concerning Umbrella Corp., the film adaptations that branched into their own universe also paint this multinational conglomerate in a rather infamous light. In every iteration, Umbrella is never up to any good: be it the manufacture and mass production of biological weaponry, or ushering a new race of virus-enhance monstrosities. At the end of the day, the "Resident Evil" films also fit the survival-horror mold, with a woman named Alice (Milla Jovovich) at the center of the horrors crafted by none other than Umbrella.

What are the highest grossing horror movies of all time? More specifically, what are the highest grossing horror franchises of all time? On the list of the Top 20, only Five franchises in the history of the genre have crossed the $1 billion mark. Can you guess which ones?
Franchises including The Purge, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination, The Exorcist, Insidious and Halloween are some of the biggest of all time, but even they haven’t yet been able to crack that massive billion dollar milestone. Other franchises including Paranormal Activity and Scream come even closer, but haven’t yet crossed over into the billions.
The only horror franchises to hit $1 billion, you ask?
With 10 films under its belt – and an eleventh on the way soon – the Saw franchise officially shattered the $1 billion milestone with the release of Saw X last year. The return of Jigsaw and Amanda drove the...

In 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland teamed up to make the British horror film "28 Days Later," and the zombie genre was changed forever. Sure, we can argue whether or not those infected with the rage virus are truly zombies until we're blue in the face, but that discourse is as stale as those still fighting to prove "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie. By taking the social commentary of George A. Romero's zombie films that came before, injecting the story with the bleak stillness of a post-apocalyptic London, and incorporating zombies that move at a breakneck pace — zombies were scary again for the first time in decades.
2007's "28 Weeks Later" saw Boyle and Garland step back into a producer capacity, and although the film certainly has its defenders (myself included), fans have been frothing at the mouth for a return of the magic Boyle/Garland collaboration. Now,...

Madrid-based Rock & Ruz – the production company of Netflix’s “Nowhere,” which has just been confirmed by Netflix as its most-viewed Spanish-language movie of all time – has pacted new projects with Italy’s Leonardo Fasoli, a head-writer of “Gomorrah” and creator of “ZeroZeroZero,” and Spain-based Alejandro Hernández, a co-writer on Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and “La Fortuna.”
Targeting the key to high-end fiction success in Europe – its screenwriters – and added to “Nowhere” and an upcoming Spanish-Mexican remake of hit Korean movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7” – the freshly-announced projects mark out Rock & Ruz as a new and significant Spain-based international player.
As international markets – both theatrical and global streamers – are asking for bigger films with identifiable audiences, Rock & Ruz’s bold slate looks like a ready source of titles.

It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.
Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

"Need for Speed" tends to get unceremoniously left out of the conversation about video game movies. Released in 2014, the film debuted at the height of Aaron Paul's post-"Breaking Bad" fame. Paul stars as Tobey Marshall, a former race car driver turned working-class mechanic from New York whose friend is killed by Tobey's wealthy rival Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) during an illegal street race -- a crime that Tobey is wrongly arrested and convicted for. Upon his release from prison, Tobey sets out to defeat Dino in a San Francisco race. However, for reasons that are too complicated to get into here, he must do so by first driving across the country in a rare Mustang he helped restore in less than 48 hours. Also, Imogen Poots is riding shotgun with him.

In 2022, Netflix released a live-action series based on the "Resident Evil" video games, just a few months removed from the "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" anime series for the streamer. Not to mention, Johannes Roberts' cinematic reboot, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City." That film came just four years after the end of Paul W.S. Anderson's mega-blockbuster film series starring Milla Jovovich, which ran concurrently with a series of unrelated animated films and many installments of the video game. This is all to say that "Resident Evil," as a property, has grown beyond just the games, and that the fandom has splintered off into a variety of directions and mediums. Trying to appease the whole of the "Resident Evil" community with an adaptation is at this point, impossible. Too many people want too many different things, and those differences are often in direct opposition to one another.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
At this point, the "video game movie" classification feels just about as broad and changeable as that of a "superhero movie." Is there any point in lumping together movies like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" or "Detective Pikachu" with "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"? (Does anyone even remember "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"?) By the same token, any lingering talk of an all-expansive "curse" associated with these adaptations increasingly comes across less like some inexplicable barrier that studios have (mostly) been unable to cross, and more to do with the idea that simply trying to translate a medium as idiosyncratic and immersive as video games into the wildly different language of film has always been self-defeating.

Henry Cavill fans have spoken by helping The Witcher reclaim its spot atop the Netflix English-language charts from July 24 to July 30. The second batch of episodes for The Witcher Season 3 debuted on July 27, with 7.8M views making for an impressive debut! The season has amassed 47.7M views since the first half of the season cast a spell on Netflix subscribers.
Inspired by a series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family — the story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witches, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil are not easily identified.

While "Resident Evil" is unquestionably one of the most popular brands across the globe, it seems as if it's impossible to adapt the games to the screen in a way that will appease the very vocal fandom. The most recent film attempt, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" was such a blatant love letter to the games, featuring faithful recreations of iconic locations, dozens of undead Easter eggs, and some pretty perfect casting decisions. Robbie Amell might as well have been built in a lab to play Chris Redfield, the "Resident Evil" franchise's resident boulder-punching hero, for better and for worse.
During an interview with Comic Book Resource, Amell confessed that the filming of "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" would stay with him forever ... literally. "I got a four or five-inch-long scar on my arm that has just faded now, a year later," he said. This interview took place...

Last week, we heard that the 2021 live-action feature Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City may be getting a follow-up of sorts, as a project called Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is in the works, coming from the same company that was behind Welcome to Raccoon City (Raccoon Hg Film Productions) and set to film in the same area: Greater Sudbury, a city in Ontario, Canada. Now the Resident Evil Wiki team has given us further information that indicates the new film will be based on the 2002 video game Resident Evil Zero!

Despite the mixed reactions and a lackluster box office reaction to last year’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, Sony is apparently forging ahead with another film. Sudbury.com has let slip that the city has received funding for a new film project called “The Umbrella Chronicles”.
The city, which was one of the filming locations for Welcome to Raccoon City, will be receiving $2 million Cad from the provincial government for the project, which is being developed by Raccoon Hg Film Productions. That same production company was behind the 2021 movie.
Sony has not officially announced a sequel to the Johannes Roberts-directed film, but given that the credits hinted at a sequel, things are looking like it’s in the works. After all, it would appear that this sequel is taking its name from the 2007 on-rails shooter Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Opening scenes already have a lot riding on them. Add to that a television show that is adapting one of the best video game stories ever told, and the stakes are even higher.
It's been a long and winding road to get to HBO's "The Last of Us," which has a massive budget to match its massive ambitions. Despite being produced by HBO, the home of prestige TV, being co-written by Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, the writer and co-director of the original game, the threat of the video game adaptation curse nonetheless looms over "The Last of Us."
However, the first episode of the series is a promising start, offering an outstanding example of how exactly to break free from the disappointments of other adaptations. Specifically, it's the series' opening scene that helps set it apart. Set decades before the main story of "The Last of Us" and featuring...

As Hollywood looks for new content to keep consumers engaged, video games have become an intellectual property gold mine with the number of film and television adaptations consistently growing over the last two decades — especially in the streaming world.
Video game adaptations released within the past several years include the films “Uncharted,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” and TV shows “The Witcher,” “Halo,” “Arcane,” “Resident Evil” and “Cyberpunk Edgerunners.”
But on Sunday, HBO debuts “The Last of Us” with the daring goal of elevating the video-game adaptation to prestige TV — something that hasn’t truly been accomplished before.
While many past attempts at television and film adaptations of video games have failed to live up to fan expectations, Cowen entertainment, media and gaming analyst Doug Creutz told TheWrap that the current boom differs in that storytellers are taking the...

While theaters have “Avatar: The Way of Water” bringing in most of the revenue, two films that had recent successful theatrical runs dominate home viewing revenue this Christmas. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was an immediate #1 at Netflix (it had a one-week preview in theaters a month ago). “Violent Night” with an evil Santa (Universal/19.99), still #5 in theaters, tops Vudu (ranking by revenue) and iTunes and Google Play (calculating by transactions).
Otherwise, 22 of the 40 positions on the three VOD plus Netflix top ten charts we cover are Christmas-set or themed. And with these included, films released before 2022 constitute 23 of the 40 slots. Making all charts are “The Grinch” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal), with “Elf,” “Christmas Vacation,” “The Polar Express” (Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie is keeping pretty busy these days. In addition to his role directing the live-action and somehow TikTok-inspired adaptation of Disney's "Hercules," he's also set to start production on the series spin-off of his film "The Gentlemen" for Netflix. In the 2019 film, Matthew McConaughey starred as Mickey Pearson, an American living in England who oversees a massive marijuana empire hidden in the estates of members of the British aristocracy in need of some fast cash. We called "The Gentlemen" a "stylish but empty Guy Ritchie gangster romp" in our own review of the film, but the box office success of the action-comedy crime film was enough to constitute a follow-up series. The film is set in the same world as "The Gentlemen," but as reported by Variety, promises to be a story all its own. Here's everything we know about the series so far.

The cast of The Gentlemen series is growing like a weed. See what I did there? After casting actor Theo James as the show’s star, Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series adaptation welcomes more stars to the cast. Joining James for the anticipated crime comedy are Vinnie Jones, Kaya Scodalerio, Giancarlo Esposito, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, and Peter Serafinowicz.
According to reports, Jones will star as Geoff Seacombe, the estate’s groundskeeper; Scodalerio will play Susie Glass, a compliment to Eddie Halstead (Theo James), who oversees Mickey Pearson’s drug business. Meanwhile, Ings will play Freddy Halstead, Eddie’s older sibling who owes dangerous people a lot of money; Richardson will play Lady Sabrina, Eddie and Freddy’s mother. Lastly, James plays the project’s lead character, Eddie Halstead, who inherits his father’s substantial estate and discovers he’s in charge of a marijuana empire owned by the notorious Mickey Pearson.

History repeats itself. When the Shudder streaming service revived the V/H/S/ found footage horror franchise with V/H/S/94 last year, it really paid off for them. V/H/S/94 set viewership records and became the service’s biggest movie premiere ever. That’s why we got V/H/S/99 this year. And Shudder has a hit on their hands again.
Shudder sent out a press release to let us know V/H/S/99 “debuted to record numbers in its opening weekend. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for next year.

Every few weeks, we seem to hear that she has signed on to play a role in another genre project. Back in April it was the supernatural thriller Burnouts. And now Deadline reports that Pettyjohn will star in The Not Polly, the next horror movie from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City director Johannes Roberts.
Producer and music industry executive Yasushi Akimoto crafted the story for The Not Polly, in which Pettyjohn will be playing Polly, the most popular and most beautiful girl in school, who wakes up after a party to find that she is trapped in a morgue,...

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

V/H/S/94 debuted to rave reviews from film critics, with The New York Times calling the film “a grisly, gory gem,” and a 90 certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. V/H/S/94 was the biggest movie premiere in Shudder history, setting a...

Whether they're seasoned filmmakers or voices on the rise, the "V/H/S" series has been a great den for all sorts of talent to try their hand at a miniature horror story. Horror anthologies have been going strong for decades, but it really wasn't until 2012's "V/H/S" where the concept was crafted to fit the mold for found footage. Since then, the series has ushered in five feature films.
The most recent entry in this series, "V/H/S/99" features another fun list of names, but the entry that stands out is "Suicide Bid," which happens to be come to us from director Johannes Roberts.
Roberts is a name that may not immediately stand out, but he's been making a name for himself in the world of horror. I don't share much love for "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," but at the same time, I consider "The Strangers: Prey At Night," one...

Exclusive: Going into the American Film Market, Bankside Films is launching international sales on horror The Not Polly, which will be directed by 47 Meters Down filmmaker Johannes Roberts.
Bankside and Roberts are teaming on the film with Japanese producer and music industry executive Yasushi Akimoto who originated the film’s story. Production is scheduled for the end of this year in Kentucky.
Little Fires Everywhere and Destroyer actress Jade Pettyjohn is set to star in the movie as Polly, the most popular and most beautiful girl in school, who wakes up after a party to find that she is trapped in a morgue, apparently dead, with no reflection, no pulse and no heartbeat. To make matters worse, she has been possessed.
James Harris (47 Meters Down) of Tea Shop Productions is producing alongside Sean DeMott (The Free Fall). Riki Melwani (Crows Blood) and Eiko Matsumoto from Akimoto Studios will also be producing.
