Indian Territories, 1865 - a lone traveler murderously ambushes men at a campfire for unknown reasons. We're next returned to Missouri, months earlier, as the traveler visits a tavern, where his fate changes when he offers a lady a drink.
The mysterious John Bones worms his way into Wayland's psyche, while laying out a plan for escape from Rock Island. Deals like this don't come free though.
After following John Bones' plan for escape from Rock Island, Wayland in on the run from Union patrols. Back in the tavern, Wayland comes face to face with the ogre holding Myrtle captive, the menacing Ezra P. Roscoe, aka the Baldman.
On the run from Union soldiers, Wayland stumbles across a timid Carpetbagger who unwittingly provides opportunity for Wayland's cover. Confrontation abounds in the Baldman's lair.
Freed from her captor, Myrtle has decided to join Wayland on his journey home, whether he likes it or not. They're not alone traveling these back roads though, something far more sinister follows.
