Guy in the Sky is another web film by Bikas Mishra. Award winning director of Chauranga fame Bikas Mishra made his digital debut with Pagla Ghoda, an adaptation of Badal Sircar's play by the same name. Now, he has come up with a satire 'Guy in the Sky' which is inspired by CS Kambar's Scapegoat. This was released on Hotstar on 13th June, 2017. Indeed CinePlay, a venture of Nandita Das and husband Subodh Maskara, is able to fulfill its mission to bring timeless stories from theater to cinematic platform.
This film 'Guy in the Sky' is quirky. It does turn out to be a meaningful satire which makes us think. The film takes a dig on the current political scenario and the social media dependence of people. Social Media has become a platform to vent out our thoughts and emotions, and at times without even checking the authenticity of so called facts. And social media 'likes', 'share' matter a lot and one seeks validation of self on this basis. These also become a parameter to measure the gravity of a relationship. One can be very strongly opinionated and talk about revolution over a cup of coffee or in social media, but when it comes to actually becoming a change agent or change catalyst, one backs out or dodges the responsibilities of self. On one side, the film deals with the current political climate of our country, and on the other side, it does take a dig at us and our social media dependence. Guy in the Sky is fun to watch with food for thought.
The opening of the film has a quote by Jean Luc Godard "All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl" which sets the premise of the film. Mehak (Maanvi Gagroo) and Raghav (Sunny Hinduja) are young couple. Raghav makes breakfast for both Mehak and himself. Both of them look very happy together. But slowly, when the conversation begins, one can easily understand that they are two different individuals and poles apart when it comes to politics and their ideologies. Mehak takes part in protests against 'Netaji' (a corrupt politician and faceless in the film, we can feel his presence through various situations) whereas Raghav absolutely detests these ideas of protests, being a revolutionary etc. He believes in living his life and plays it safely. This ideological incompatibility between Mehak and Raghav does cause verbal spats between them. While Mehak goes for protests against the corrupt 'Netaji', Raghav stays back home to complete his work assignment of making jingles. That is when the entry of Tannishtha Chatterjee as a revolutionary happens with a specific intention. She is an intruder who changes the course of the film. What is her purpose? All the three characters Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sunny Hinduja and Maanvi Gagroo do add lot of value to their roles, generate humour through their spontaneous performances.
