There were no clear Oscar signals coming out of the 31st Hamptons International Film Festival. Still, there were some admirable stats for the eastern Long Island event that’s a favorite with filmmakers and locals. This year Hiff screened a lineup of films that were 49% female-directed and represented 42 countries from around the world. The festival had a record number of submissions this year and screened 72 features and 46 shorts with eight world premieres, three North American premieres, 12 US premieres, 13 East Coast premieres, and seven New York premieres.

Sammy Hagar joined The Killers onstage during the latter’s set at the Ohana Festival for a rendition of Van Halen’s “Why Can’t This Be Love.”
After bringing out Eddie Vedder for a cover of Tom Petty’s “The Waiting” earlier during the September 29th set, The Killers were joined by a much more unpredictable guest: The Red Rocker.
Considering Hagar wasn’t even on the bill for the Ohana Festival, it was extra surprising to see the one-time Van Halen frontman suddenly appear onstage for the alt-rock band’s encore.
“Is it too late to blow your minds again?” asked frontman Brandon Flowers. “It might keep you up. Sammy Hagar…”
As Hagar emerged from stage left, the band launched into Van Halen’s “Why Can’t This Be Love” — notably Hagar’s first big hit with his old band after he took over for David Lee Roth.

Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival is underway this weekend in Dana Point, California, with the Pearl Jam frontman popping up during the Killers’ Friday night headlining set to perform Tom Petty’s “The Waiting.”
Vedder dedicated the performance to some diehard Killers fans who situated themselves along the front rail when the festival open hours earlier. “This one’s for you,” Vedder said, pointing them out.

Exclusive: The Tom Petty Estate has taken on new management at Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, with plans to bring new attention to Petty’s music and legacy through scripted and non-scripted storytelling. Further details as to the form projects might take haven’t been disclosed, though sources tell Deadline that a traditional biopic on the rock and roll legend has not been a point of conversation.
One of the best-selling musical artists of all time, Petty, during his four-decade career, performed for over 140 million fans worldwide, selling upwards of 84M records and seeing his music garner nearly 5B streams. Famous for lyrics touching on themes of love, loss, and perseverance, as well as for his distinctive voice and guitar-driven sound, the Gainesville, Florida native was known as much for his solo work as for that with band The Heartbreakers.

This is my fourth time covering the Berlinale Shorts for Directors Notes. Each year I’ve always been struck by the diversity of films on offer – ranging from animation to video art to self-reflexive documentary forms – as well as the wide-ranging filmmaking perspectives the programme brings. Being able to express a self-contained idea in just under 30 minutes, they represent cinema in its purest, most unfiltered form. This year might be the best collection yet, featuring a dazzling array of shorts that seemingly exist in the porous border between dreams and reality, seamlessly moving between different modes of filmmaking expression. Avoiding standard representations and simplistic three-act structures, the Berlinale Shorts show how the short format is unbound by financial expectations or narrative conventionality – allowing the viewer kaleidoscopic insight into the very best of international cinema. Here are our selections for ten films definitely worth putting on your radar.
