No matter how many crimes are committed because people are inspired by what they hear on various true crime podcasts, the genre remains extremely popular. Millions of people get their thrills from real-life stories and dive deep into the minds of murderers through their psychological portraits.
Only Murders in the Building isn't the only show that depicts fans of the genre facing real-life mysteries, but it's safe to say it's the most popular. Starring A-list celebrities like Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Meryl Streep and Cara Delevigne, the show has been unparalleled for the past 3 seasons. But now things might change.
What Bodkin Is About?
To say that May is packed with Netflix premieres would be an understatement. There are many different original series premiering for the first time or returning with new seasons this month, and Bodkin is one of them.

Looking back at Derry Girls, many people believe that Netflix, or any streaming platform for that matter, has yet to create such a brutally honest yet entertaining sitcom. Derry Girls had it all, from brilliant comedic performances from all of the show's leads to truly heartbreaking reminders of Ireland's troubled times.
It was only several years after the show's finale aired that people began to notice some of the little things that the series glossed over. The origins of James Maguire, the Derry newcomer who joined the girls in the pilot, is one of the secrets that has only recently been revealed.
Where Derry Girls’ James Is From?
Although viewers were enchanted by the ensemble of girls who portrayed Erin, Michelle, Claire and Orla in the show, it's Dylan Llewellyn's James who brought the unique accent to the group. As the only boy in the all-girls college, he was...

One of the easiest ways to measure someone’s success is to count all the pop culture references that others make to them. In the case of Stephen King, they would probably hit a three-digit number, considering how many TV shows, movies, and other novel authors have been using King’s plots as an inspiration.
If you are interested to see 10 of the most popular TV shows that referred to King one way or the other, check out the list below.
Lost (2004-2010)
Heavily influenced by King's writing, Lost had no shortage of references and easter eggs to the author within the show. The most obvious are season 3 Juliet's choice of Carrie as a book club entry, and the future version of Jack reading a newspaper clipping with words like "Ted," "the Tower," and "beam" in it, all references to Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Nicola Coughlan opened up about her support for Palestine and how she was told it could affect the acting gigs she’s offered.
In a Teen Vogue cover story, the Bridgerton star sat down to discuss the show’s upcoming and highly anticipated season three. In the conversation, she also got candid about her support for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Coughlan has been vocal on social media about her support for the people, especially the children, of Palestine, who are caught in the middle of the Israel-Hamas War. She acknowledged her support stems from a “moral responsibility to give back” because of her privilege as a white woman.
The actress noted her advocacy began before she landed her breakout role on Derry Girls. She was involved in different causes, like going door-to-door campaigning for marriage equality in her home country of Ireland and marching for abortion rights.

Nicola Coughlan said she would spontaneously burst into tears while balancing filming schedules for Bridgerton and Big Mood.
“I’d film one show during the week, the other on the weekend,” Coughlan told AP Entertainment. Coughlan stars as Penelope Bridgerton in season three of Netflix’s Bridgerton, out next month, and as Maggie in the UK’s Channel 4 comedy Big Mood, released in March.
“I remember that I was so tired, I would just start crying randomly,” Coughlan said of balancing both projects at once. “And I would I would be saying, ‘There’s nothing actually wrong with me. I am just very tired.’ I had to learn my Big Mood script on the Bridgerton set.”

When Nicola Coughlan takes center stage on Bridgerton Season 3, her parents won’t be watching the same version as the rest of the world.
The Penelope Featherington actress has revealed in a new interview that she will have a PG cut of the steamy romance drama for her parents to watch.
Coughlan, born in Galway, Ireland, is from an Irish Catholic family.
“It’s literally written into my contract,” she dished on SiriusXM Hits 1 earlier this week.
“People think I’m like saying it as a joke. I just don’t want to. I grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe.”
The Derry Girls alum said that her mother “didn’t know it was gonna be saucy” when watching the first season.

Nicola Coughlan plays Penelope Featherington, the youngest daughter in the Featherington family, in Netflix’s historical romance-drama Bridgerton. Coughlan’s character was portrayed as a reluctant debutante in Regency-era London. The Big Mood actress had several steamy scenes throughout the two seasons of the show. Since Coughlan’s family is Irish Catholic and would not be happy about these scenes in the series, the actress had a special clause written into her contract.

Bridgerton was created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shondaland for Netflix. The show’s second season broke Netflix records, ultimately leading to its renewal for third and fourth seasons. The third season will drop on the streaming platform in two parts this year.

Nicola Coughlan is revealing one stipulation in her Bridgerton contract that is actually more for her parents.
The actress, who plays Penelope Featherington in the hit Netflix period drama, shared in a recent interview with SiriusXM Hits 1, via The Independent, that she demanded the show provide an alternate cut of season three with less nudity to show her family.
“It’s literally written into my contract,” Coughlan said. “People think I’m like saying it as a joke. I just don’t want to. I grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe.”
The Derry Girls actress, who appeared throughout Bridgerton‘s first two seasons, has previously talked about the “spicy” upcoming season, which centers on her character being courted by Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton. She told Entertainment Tonight last year that “a lot of the stuff from the books that the fans expect has made it into the show.

Exclusive: The competition investigation that is spooking the UK’s fabled TV drama industry looks set to rumble on until at least the end of the year.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has extended the probe into production company cartel behavior by six months and will implement “further investigatory steps and assessment of evidence” between now and October, according to an update posted by the authority. No assumption is being made at this stage that there has been a breach of competition law, we understand, although the CMA continues to say it has “reasonable grounds to suspect one or more breaches.”
No more information was forthcoming about the “investigatory steps” but Deadline is told the CMA has collected a huge amount of evidence and is currently sifting through, while it could still demand more information. For the most part, those being investigated are understood to have been unaware of...

With swordfights, corsets, a sprinkle of magic and an array of truly magnificent hats (including one worn by a poodle), new Disney+ original series “Renegade Nell” has more than a touch in common with that other swashbuckling Disney staple “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Both are set at the turn of the 17th to 18th centuries and, as with “Pirates,” the period details in “Renegade Nell” abound. In Nov. 2022, just as the show moved into the final phase of production, Variety was invited to visit Ealing Studios in West London where the wood-panelled Stuart-era sets were studded with quill pens and wax seals while an imposing portrait of Joely Richardson — in costume as the extravagantly-outfitted and wigged baddie Lady Eularia Moggerhangar — hung on the wall.

Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright returns with a surprising addition to her already jam-packed repertoire with this fun and beautifully acted action-packed adventure for Disney+.
Renegade Nell stars Derry Girls alum Louisa Harland as Nell Jackson, a feisty highwaywoman in 1700s Britain. Nell finds herself framed for murder and becomes a female highwayman in 18th century England, soon becoming the most feared highwaywoman in the country. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed) appears, Nell realises her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined.
Far from being a straightforward historical romp, this is Wainwright’s unexpected foray into the fantasy genre. It is also the perfect vehicle for Harland who appears to be having a whale of a time here.
We spoke to Harland and co-stars Nick Mohammed, Adrian Lester, Joely Richardson, Frank Dillane, Alice Kremelberg, newcomer Jake Dunn and director Ben Taylor about their experience working with the legendary writer.

“How to Get to Heaven From Belfast,” the new series from “Derry Girls” creator Lisa McGee, has moved to Netflix from Channel 4.

Exclusive: In October 2023, the British TV drama community was as confused as it was surprised to be told that some of the most well-known production companies in the country were being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for “suspected anti-competitive behaviour.”
For those suddenly finding themselves in the proverbial dock, that feeling swiftly turned to fear as they were struck by the reality of being investigated by an authority that they knew little about.
Now, with the CMA’s six-month-long initial investigation period drawing to a close, Deadline has spoken with those inside and outside of the investigation to assess the state of play.
We are told that those being probed are having to hand over troves of WhatsApps and emails to lawyers in order to prove innocence, are spending hours and hours dealing with CMA questions, and yet are still unsure as to why they in particular are under the microscope.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Following in the footsteps of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air is the third entry into a collection of epic World War II limited series from producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Like its “Brothers” before it, Masters of the Air also features a massive cast. And we mean like … massive.
Masters of the Air‘s Wikipedia page reveals that more than 60 actors are credited in this nine-episode Apple TV+ series. Employing that many speaking roles makes sense, of course, as the Allies’ efforts to defeat Hitler and the Axis in WWII required quite a bit of manpower. It’s only nature that any miniseries telling that story would try to capture the scale of it all.
Series producer Gary Goetzman credits casting director Lucy Bevan with getting the impressive cadre of actors together.
“[Casting] had to be done on Zoom basically because it was during Covid.

As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Coming-of-age movies and television shows are an interesting genre. It allows the audience of every age group to come to terms with the current milieu and prepare their minds for the fact that every generation has a different mindset. One just needs to accept and understand it. Sex Education, Derry Girls, Never Have I Ever, and Ginny and Georgia are some of the shows that tackle the coming-of-age genre. A lot could be imbibed from these stories that are about a particular generation and their manner of dealing with issues at hand. Cindy la Regia: The High School Years is a new Mexican Netflix original show that deals with a bunch of teenage girls and boys dealing with life as high school students. The show is based on a graphic novel by Ricardo Cucamonga and will be released on the streaming platform on December 20, 2023.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
I miss the days when Hollywood believed a great TV show could sustain an entire network. You know, back when television was still growing, and rising brands were built around groundbreaking, widely respected original programs. HBO was where you watched “The Sopranos,” AMC had “Mad Men,” and Netflix streamed “Orange Is the New Black.” Premium cable expanded to basic cable, which expanded to streaming, which expanded and expanded and expanded — almost always by touting the next great series as the best reason to tune in, sign up, or seek out a previously undiscovered channel in your satellite guide.

Highway robbery, murderous Tudors and fancy fashion houses abound in Disney’s slate of UK productions for next year.
With a film and TV industry slightly less hampered by Hollywood strike action, Disney Plus have confirmed 2024 air dates for a bunch of UK-based series.
BAFTA-winner Sally Wainwright’s new series, Renegade Nell, has been locked in for a Spring 2024 release. Starring Louisa Harland (Orla from Derry Girls) as the titular rebel, the show finds a young woman framed for murder and inadvertently becoming the most notorious highwaywoman in 18th century England. Throw in a magical spirit played by Ted Lasso's Nick Mohammed, and we’ve got a proper fantasy action-adventure series on our hands.
Also confirmed is the second series of award-winning comedy Extraordinary, which stars Máiréad Tyers as the only non-powered person in a world full of superheroes and is arriving in “early 2024”, and a four-part adaptation of C.J. Sansom’s murder mystery series,...

At least one of the stars of Derry Girls would sign up for a reprise of the hit comedy.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who played lead Derry Girl Erin in the award-winning show based on the lives of four Northern Irish teenage girls (and an English male cousin), told The Belfast Telegraph she hopes she hasn’t said goodbye to her character for ever, following the show’s triumphant finale in 2022.
She said: “It felt bizarre when the show ended, because I was done with Erin, but Lisa is continuing her life.
“It would be interesting to revisit Erin down the line and see what she’s up to because your twenties are so chaotic. But that would really be down to Lisa. I’d love to work with her again.”
Derry Girls became one of Channel 4’s biggest ever comedies on its debut in 2018, and then a global hit on the Netflix platform.

She was top of the class in the worldwide hit Derry Girls, but Saoirse-Monica Jackson was terrified she’d never work again… How wrong she was. The show opened so many doors for her – from superhero movies to a 14th-century period drama
When the first season of the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls debuted in 2018, the show’s lead actor Saoirse-Monica Jackson had something of a flip out. Her performance as Erin Quinn, one of four Catholic schoolgirls (and an English fella) living in Derry on the Northern Ireland border in the final throes of the Troubles, was – she now realised – quite out there: full of adolescent facial contortions that dripped with awkwardness, disdain and indignation. Jackson had been inspired by the punk irascibility of her teenage cousin and the animated comic tics of Jim Carrey and Rowan Atkinson. But now she feared that she had blown her big break.

Netflix owns less than 25% of its IP of its content in Europe after expanding its business models over recent years, a senior acquisitions head has revealed.
Speaking today at Content London in the UK, Netflix Director of Acquisitions Strategy Emea Lina Brounéus told delegates how the streamer is seeking to move beyond perceptions it only wants to own the European content it invests in, and instead is open to a range of models.
“If you look at it on a whole, we own less than 25% of the IP rights for our European content,” she said. “That’s a big evolution.”
For comparison, Ampere Analysis last year unveiled data showing originals and exclusives made up more than 50% of the Netflix catalog in the U.S. for the first time. It should be noted Netflix does brand many of its international acquisitions for the States as originals, despite them hailing from other destinations.

It’s Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary month, which calls for two things: celebration, and admin. Fittingly, here’s an administrative celebration of the BBC show, featuring every season/series that’s aired so far. After a six-tab Excel file and a lot of overthinking, it’s a big ol’ list arranging each of Doctor Who’s individual runs in reverse order of excellence.

Nicola Coughlan will be appearing in a Doctor Who Christmas special. Just not this year.
Showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed at a press conference that Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Coughlan will appear in a future Christmas special. He revealed that’s the reason for the recent photos of Coughlan filming around South Wales that were circulating.
“[We’ve got] Nicola Coughlan at Christmas. Not this Christmas, next Christmas. We’re shooting Christmas 2024 now,” he explained.
David Tennant and Catherine Tate return in a few weeks for a trio of 60th anniversary specials. After that, Ncuti Gatwa and Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson make their debut as the 15th Doctor and new companion Ruby Sunday.
Gatwa’s first full series was filmed this summer and will air next year.

A raucous comedy from playwright Camilla Whitehill, “Big Mood” teams “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls” alum Nicola Coughlan with ‘It’s a Sin’ star Lydia West to dive headlong into mental illness and friendship. Fremantle, heading global distribution, will showcase the project in Cannes as part of its Mipcom slate. The market kicks off Oct.16.
A divinely sardonic and captivating laugh riot, the upcoming Channel 4 series presents an earnest portrait of mania and biologically-induced despair in a world where mental health has been commodified and sanitized for ease of consumption. Whitehill manages a highly nuanced depiction of Coughlan’s Maggie, whose bipolar pendulum swings erratically, as she tries desperately to regain control of her fleeting agency while clinging tightly to longtime friend Eddie, played by West.
“We’ve done a lot of patting ourselves on the back as a society, saying, ‘We’re really facing mental health,’ but we’re not.

Coming off another year marked by uncertainty and conflict, ordinary, unlikely heroes take center stage in a slew of new shows. While crime especially the Nordic-inspired kind is not going anywhere, and there are quite a few spectacles waiting around the corner, including Mipcom world premiere “Concordia,” intimate stories about families and friends butting heads but ultimately trying to come together continue to dominate the market stage. There are also more portrayals of strong, complicated women who dare to dream big today or in the past. The following is a list of some of the buzziest titles at Mipcom.
“After the Party”
(ITV Studios)
Penny Wilding (played by Robyn Malcolm) likes to keep herself very busy: she is a science teacher, basketball coach, environmental activist, mother and grandmother. Famously outspoken and suffering no fools, she alienates many in her close-knit community. But Penny is perfectly fine with that.
She is harboring a painful memory,...

Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis, and Derry Girls star Louisa Harland have signed on to star in Ulster American, a new stage production from Irish playwright David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue) and directed by Jeremy Herrin.
Ulster American will run at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, with previews from December 4 and opening night on December 13.
The social satire follows three characters, an Oscar-winning American actor, an English director, and a Northern Irish playwright, who are about to begin rehearsals for a new play — one that could transform each of their careers. But when it turns out that they’re not on the same page, the night threatens to spiral out of control. Synopsis reads: Power dynamics, cultural identity, and the perils of being a woman in the entertainment industry; nothing is off limits in this pitch-black comedy.

A genius South Korean lawyer with very poor social skills, Wonder Woman star Connie Nielsen as Danish writer Karen Blixen, Martin Freeman as a cop on the edge, and those foul-mouthed Derry Girls are among the nominees for this year’s International Emmy awards, which were announced today by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The 56 nominees span 20 countries and six continents.
Best drama contenders include South Korea’s Extraordinary Attorney Woo, featuring Park Eun-bin as an autistic rookie female lawyer with a genius Iq; the German period drama The Empress, British thriller The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi; and Yosi, the Regretful Spy, a historic thriller from Argentina, another Amazon production. On the comedy side, Netflix’s Northern Irish hit Derry Girls is up against Argentine series The Boss from Star+, season 2 of the French reality show send-up Le Flambeau, and Vir Das: Landing, a Netflix stand-up special from the Indian comedy star.
