"Siskel & Ebert" A Prairie Home Companion/Cars/The Lake House/Clean/Sketches of Frank Gehry (TV Episode 2006) Poster

Roger Ebert: Self - Host

Quotes

  • Roger Ebert - Host : Robert Altman's new film "A Prairie Home Companion" is a movie you wanna cuddle, it's so funny and sweet and so perfectly in the spirit of Garrison Keillor's great radio program.

    [...]

Roger Ebert - Host : I felt good during this movie from the beginning to the end. It was as warm and embracing as the radio show itself, and yet it was something more. There's a sense of elegy in the film, the sense that something wonderful is coming to an end, and the way to handle that is not to regret it but to treasure the memories. The program's actual sound man and house band play themselves, and Keillor drives everyone crazy by being so casual, he can barely make it to the microphone. And the music and the jokes all work, and the timing between Tomlin and Streep is awesome. Thumbs way up.

Richard Roeper - Host : Well... good for you, I'm glad you're gonna enjoy your cuddling with this movie. I'm giving it thumbs down.

    Roger Ebert - Host : You're NOT.

    Richard Roeper - Host : I do...

Roger Ebert - Host : You're giving this movie thumbs down.

Richard Roeper - Host : I AM giving this movie thumbs down. I'm gonna tell you why...

Roger Ebert - Host : You have the appearance of a human being, but in fact, you are an android.

Richard Roeper - Host : Well, you're the one cuddling with a movie. Um... I think it has a lot of spirit and style. I think a lot of it has to do with- my thumb's down, Roger, has to do with the fact that I'm not a fan of "A Prairie Home Companion".

Roger Ebert - Host : Oh, wow.

Richard Roeper - Host : I've always found it to be a little, a little smug, a little elitist. And you talk about the jokes and the music, either you like that brand of music and humor, or you don't.

Roger Ebert - Host : I tell those kind of jokes all the time.

Richard Roeper - Host : You do. I'm here for 'em, and I think, if you haven't noticed for the last six years, y'know, I often leave the room when you get to your third or fourth joke.

Roger Ebert - Host : Your loss.

Richard Roeper - Host : You know, Garrison Keillor does a lot of that, "This program is brought to you by Johnson's Shoe Polish, it's polish for your shoes." And you either like that, or you don't.

Roger Ebert - Host : I like it.

Richard Roeper - Host : And there must be about thirty songs in this movie. I don't find them that entertaining.

Roger Ebert - Host : How about "Red River Valley"?

Richard Roeper - Host : How about it?

Roger Ebert - Host : You're not gonna get a better song than that.

Richard Roeper - Host : It's, it's not for me, I don't enjoy that kind of music, I don't enjoy that kind of humor...

Roger Ebert - Host : Well, all I can say is...

Richard Roeper - Host : The performances are very good, and I will say this: Somebody like Lindsay Lohan, we just saw her in a horrible comedy called "Just My Luck" a couple weeks ago, she's wonderful here in a supporting role.

Roger Ebert - Host : I will say this: There are people who love the radio show.

Richard Roeper - Host : Of course, millions. Millions.

Roger Ebert - Host : And they thought this movie was gonna screw it up. It doesn't.

Richard Roeper - Host : No, well, Garrison Keillor wrote the movie, y'know...

Roger Ebert - Host : If you love the radio show, you're gonna love the movie.

Richard Roeper - Host : Yes.

Roger Ebert - Host : And I think it's very much an Altman movie, as well as "A Prairie Home Companion" movie.

Richard Roeper - Host : I like the Altman part of the equation more than the "Prairie Home Companion" part of the equation. Let's move on.

Roger Ebert - Host : An android! You're an android!
