My family had 2 people who stuttered
profcweir12 March 2018
This movie was so informative for me to watch and understand the challenges from people who stutter perspective.

I of course lived in a house, where you never interrupted or finished a stuttering person's sentence. There were so many unwritten rules that were tribal knowledge. I have a close personal friend who stutters and she has mentioned that I know the tribal knowledge rules, of waiting patiently while the stuttering person progresses through their block.

This movie highlights the day to day challenges that stuttering people face on a daily basis. The stories are real and authentic and genuine. I found watching this movie so enlightening to the tribal knowledge of my family that I hadn't figured out.

A Beautiful Film

I don't stutter or know anyone who does, and had no particular interest in the topic when I saw "When I Stutter." Nevertheless, I found it to be a beautiful film about personal courage and human integrity. It's inspriring no matter who you are.

Highly Informational

I have a co-worker and family member who stutter and I thought this film did an excellent job addressing issues that are often ignored. Mr. Gomez did an excellent job highlighting the frustrations some people experience with the issue and I highly recommend this film even if you do not know someone who stutters.

Captivating

WHEN I STUTTER is a wonderfully made documentary that dispels a lot of misconceptions about stuttering. As a person who stutters, I feel John has hit the nail on the head. His documentary should be a teaching tool for academia professionals, as many are misinformed.

Outstanding Gift to People Who Stutter
rodgabel29 September 2018
I invited John to show this amazing film in Maumee, Ohio, as part of a fundraiser for a special project I am working on to serve people who stutter in Africa. I was really touched by the stories and experiences John captured in the film. By far, this is the best film I have seen about stuttering and people who stutter in my lifetime. I true representation of the difficulties experienced by people who stutter and the difficulties in overcoming this highly misunderstood disorder. I believe this film should be required viewing in any class about stuttering, disability, and by anyone who has a family member who stutters. Truly a masterpiece!

Amazing, honest documentary

I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the Kansas International Film Festival and voting for it as best documentary. It an inspirational and honest and compassionate look at a segment of the population that is often overlooked. I also had the pleasure of meeting the director and a member of the cast. This film is an amazing teaching tool and taught me much about a topic that I knew very little about. I would highly recommend this film.

Powerful and Entertaining

John Gomez has created a film that is long overdue. He sheds light on the challenging and often confusing condition (to those who stutter and those who treat it!) of dysfluency. He does so with compassion and respect, allowing his participants to tell their own stories and masterfully weaving it all together. The way the stories unfold and the creative use of the medium kept me engaged and surprised. As a speech therapist, I am always looking for ways to better understand and approach this elusive condition. I felt educated, entertained and better off for having seen this beautiful film.

Fascinating and Inspiring
jskd-9903718 November 2018
John Gomez has brought to the stuttering community and the world a very significant contribution to experiencing what it is to live with the baffling, thus far incurable disorder known as stuttering. Not just a mesmerizing documentary, but a true testament to the indomitable human spirit, WHEN I STUTTER follows the struggles of several PWS (person who stutters) including actual therapy sessions which help to illuminate the frustrations and complexities of trying to come to terms with an activity that for approximately 99 percent of the world's population is as easy and effortless as breathing in and out. For the remaining one percent, the act of daily communication is often like attempting to scale Mt. Everest; one never knows if the next word, phrase or sentence will result in a free-fall into struggle, panic, avoidance and despair. I recommend this film without reservation. A must see whether or not you stutter--and most people know at least someone who does suffer from this condition. As a PWS myself, I found myself enthralled and left the screening with renewed hope and determination that anything can be overcome with work and courage.

THE INVISIBLE DISORDER
theandersens15 May 2020
As a fellow stutterer, I am grateful this documentary was made. In this film you get to see inside the mind of many stutters and the real impact is has on how they live - to this date still so little is known about why people stutter and this film will help you understand where stutters are coming from. This film is for everyone - whether you are a stutter, have a child that stutters (parents - a must see for you to better understand the profound impact is has on your child), a speech language pathologist (this is fresh insight that will make you ask your clients new questions) or just know the clerk at the grocery store that stutters. Take a moment to better yourself and hear from a different perspective.

Inspiring, Informative, & Artistic!

Wow, just, WOW!

As an educator, this film was not only informative but it was truly inspiring. It captures the very personal and humanistic side of individuals who stutter, and opened my eyes to how my students and friends may feel when they encounter stuttering events. It's a little embarrassing to say, but I learned more about stuttering through this film than I ever did through training.

The film itself was so artistically shot, that I was glued to the screen for the entire hour. I was left with wanting more! I enjoyed all the stories and especially loved the plot twist at the end...but I won't ruin the surprise!

I am grateful and honored to have seen this film...it's definitely up there as one of my favorite documentaries.
