A panicked woman runs into the street, only in order to be hit by a car. Aware that the victim is dead, the driver of the car flees the scene. A short time later he commits suicide, unable to live with the shock and the shame. Years later, this tragic episode will resurface when a child goes missing...

"Le poids des mensonges" does a good job of transforming and adapting the story to French society. The central premise is not without interest : a woman with a major secret of her own, forced to confront and uncover a whole other tangle of secrets. The movie also benefits from a beautiful lead performance.

However, the movie finds it difficult to become truly suspenseful and gripping, from an intellectual and/or emotional viewpoint. I'm not sure what causes this lack of suspense ; I suppose it's a combination of bland direction and woeful pacing issues. Anyway, if you're looking for a mystery thriller fit to give you goosebumps, "Le poids" is not your man...

Be aware that the subject matter, to wit the abuse and neglect of children, is very dark.
