When Egan holds the pump action shotgun on Cabe and Paige, he has the fore end (fore stock) pulled back so that the ejection port is open and the shotgun is incapable of firing as the breach bolt is back and not against any shell in the chamber. With the ejection port open, it is clear there are no shells in the shotgun, so it is empty.

When Toby is trapped in the trash compactor, he makes the claim "I've seen Star Wars a hundred times" just before trying to stop the walls from compacting by placing a metal pole between the closing walls. He also references Han Solo while he expects success with the pole.
If he had seen Star wars 100 times, he would have realized that Han Solo's attempt to brace the closing walls failed and that it was only because of Luke contacting C3PO and R2D2 that the walls stopped closing.
