The pyramid of Cheops rose from the Giza plateau four thousand five hundred years ago. But by whom and how was this masterpiece of engineering erected? Thanks to the excavations conducted by Egyptologist Mark Lehner, which have brought to light the remains of a village and thousands of fragments of everyday objects, we now know that the workers were not slaves, but an army of skilled volunteers, organized and well treated. For their part, the French archaeologist Pierre Tallet and his team have recently unearthed, in a Red Sea port, some exceptional papyri: the logbook of a pharaoh's official, Merer. He was the head of the boatmen in charge of transporting the limestone and granite blocks to the construction site along the Nile and on artificial lakes.
