Tony Rayns on Nikkatsu Studio (2015)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Film historian Tony Rayns is on hand for this thirty-seven minute documentary that has him talking about the Nikkatsu Studio. This documentary is broken up into several chapters but if you're interested in the subject then there's no question that this here will be exactly what you're looking for. Rayns has a great deal of knowledge and he does an extremely good job at talking about the studio from their silent era, to the their late coming sound films and all the way up to ISLAND OF DREAMS. He discusses the various stages of the company, the directors who worked for them as well as the actors. There's really nothing here to complain about as Rayns does a very good job with the history lesson he's given and we also get some nice promotional materials from the films themselves.
