A nice journey.

I enjoyed this journey through the north of England: wild landscapes, lakes, castles and interesting towns (York, Liverpool and Manchester).

The region is very rainy (about 10 days each month), but the English people have a great sense of humour: for example Richard Duckett, Staurt Smith and their friends are not afraid of the the winds and the rains and practice canyoning.

Beth Pipe , who writes hiking books and her companion have come from the souuth of England to Cumbria to live here. At the border there is the Hadrian's wall; Andrew Brown tells the story of his wall and explains that there were points for the crossing and the Romans used to collect taxes on the goods going through the wall.

Then we travel in the Lake District with Tom Maisley and Hermione Hasell: they stop at Delamain country house: the King Henry II built a tower in the 12th century and in 1679 Sir Edward Hasell purchased Delamain: Jan Hasell , the mother of Hermione organizes since 2005 the World's Original Marmalade Awards and Festival.

Besides the Lake District is the place of two sheep breeds: the Herdwick sheep and the Swaledale sheep. In some parts there also also a herd of wild deer.

We visit Liverpool: in the sixties four young men Ringo, George, Paul and John gave a new life to the city: Diane McEvoyof the Beatles Story Museum explains this period of the Beatles and the growth of the "Bleatemania": now young Liverpool men like Connor Colford and his friends Jonathan and Shea have formed "The Sky" and will play in the Jacaranda Club like the Beatles.

Then we visit Manchester: a great working town inn the past (60 % of the cotton was weaved in Manchester and exported to America or Australia): after the industrial crisis Manchester became a place of services (many Nobel Prizes coming from the university): besides the Mancunian pople are proud of their symbol (Anita Wilbraham of the "Bee Company").

Third interesting town, York, a place full of history, first the Romans, then the Anglosaxons and in 866 the Vikings two stayed for two centuries in the town. Now people are celebrating the Viking Festival: adults and children wear Viking costumes and celebrate the Viking heritage.

Then we arrive at the Eastern Coast at Staithes: a seaside with high cliffs and often a stormy sea: Sean Baxter is collecting seaweeds (algae) which deserve to be known and used in the cookinng. Besides the seaside is very good for surfing.

I enjoyed very much the encounters of Sophie with Steve Hallett, with the chef Jon Fell, with Rachel Marston and her Swaledale sheep, with Pete Price, the radio speaker and comedian, with John Costerdine, the pleasant taxi driver and guide in Manchester, with Adrian Rhodes, the priest and beekeeper of Manchester, with Felicity Masham and Sophie Abbott in Swinton Castle, with Tricia Baxter, Sean Baxter and Luke Baxter in Staithes: very nice encounters with very kind English men and women.
