Rihanna‘s “Umbrella” was, arguably, the song that transformed her from a regular Top 40 singer into a superstar. Two of Rihanna’s regular songwriters were upset that the track was so good. They wanted one of her other tracks to succeed.
Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ upset the writers of ‘Don’t Stop the Music’
Together, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor E. Hermansen are a songwriting duo called Stargate. They have been instrumental in Rihanna’s career, writing hits such as “S&m,” “Only Girl (In the World),” “Diamonds,” and “Unfaithful.” During a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eriksen recalled the creation of Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music,” one of the most beloved dance songs of the 2000s.
“Before we met her, before we even saw a picture of her, we could tell Rihanna was going places just by listening to her voice on ‘Pon de Replay,'” he said. “We just knew,...

Slow Horses is finally back with a whole new season filled with espionage, institutional failure, corruption, dark jokes, and deadly farts. The Apple TV+ series recently came out with its much anticipated third season and once again it revolves around the MI5 failures who are occupying Slough House. In the new season, we see a member of the Slow Horses getting kidnapped and how the rest of the team fights with everything they have to get them back.
As always Slow Horses isn’t your typical spy thriller because its characters and stories are as far from James Bond as they could be, and in my opinion, that’s what made Slow Horses one of the best espionage thriller ever made.

Campaigning is an essential part of a successful awards season. This year it has been varied with the return of TV appearances in addition to performances for internet media voters may frequent. And campaigning seems as intense as ever, so let’s look at how the potential nominees did so before nomination voting closed on October 20.
SEEBillboard Music Awards announce 2023 revamp, promising ‘a fresh award show concept’
Late night talk shows
Talk shows have always been good campaigning spots, and this year they were even more so. Talk shows went off-air for months due to the WGA strike, so many people were eager to watch them again when they finally came back on the air. Coincidentally, the return of these shows almost matched with the first day of Grammy voting (October 11), so there was a lot of hype that artists could take advantage of.

“Ask God why, I didn’t get an answer/Why I lose my brother to bullets/Why I lose my grandma to cancer,” Offset harmonizes on “Say My Grace.” Few could have imagined that the Atlanta artist who emerged as one-third of Migos a decade ago with “Versace,” reintroducing the concept of a rap group to the Zoomer generation, would settle uncomfortably into the role of husband to pop icon Cardi B, and become a target of internet gossip so pernicious that the phrase “Offset cheating” elicits thousands of Google search results dating back years.

Since mid-2022, heavy news and speculation have followed Offset. Rumblings of tension among his rap group Migos began when Quavo and Takeoff set off as a duo that May and continued even after Takeoff was tragically murdered last November. In recent months, things began to look lighter: He and Quavo reunited for a tribute to Takeoff at the BET Awards in June; in July, he dropped “Jealousy,” a jolting single with his wife, Cardi B, and released a cinematic self-directed video along with it; and in September, he joined Twitch...

Genre is very easily blurred these days in music, especially with more artists having creative control over their output. So while most artists compete in one genre field at the Grammys, this year we’ve got multiple artists that could maximize their nominations potential and submit in multiple fields thanks to their ability to cross genre lines so effectively.

During its seven-year run, BuzzFeed‘s Worth It has reshaped food criticism, boosted family-owned restaurants, earned over one billion views, and depicted over-the-top dishes from around the world. Now, the food-focused web series is coming to an end.
March 11 marks the beginning of the last season of Worth It. After three final episodes, hosts Steven Lim and Andrew Ilnyckyj will officially shelve their shared brand of cost-conscious food criticism.
Worth It episodes are typically framed around a specific ingredient or dish. Lim and Ilnyckyj — who are usually accompanied by cameraman and producer Adam Bianchi — travel to different restaurants to sample cheap, mid-range, and expensive versions of the chosen foodstuff. Each episode ends with the hosts determining which take on the dish provided the best bang for their buck.
That format has sent Lim, Ilnyckyj, and Bianchi around the world, and the final season of Worth It will feature more globetrotting adventures.

Ten years ago today, five performers, each now legends in their own right, came together in perfect harmony. July 28 marks Fifth Harmony's 10th anniversary since their formation on "The X-Factor," and to commemorate the occasion, they each reminisced on the decade that transformed their lives forever. The group, which originally consisted of Camila Cabello, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, and Normani, were initially put together by Simon Cowell on the show. After placing third in the competition, the girls went on to release tremendous pop hits such as "Sledgehammer" and "Worth It."
Although the band fragmented when Cabello left in 2016 to pursue a solo career and the remaining members proceeded to announce an indefinite hiatus in 2018, the love and friendship the band cultivated throughout their time together never went away. Each member is now pursuing their own career in music, but they look on the past with a certain nostalgia.

BuzzFeed is launching at month's end a brand new YouTube channel for its five-year-old Black Culture entertainment vertical, Cocoa Butter. At the same time, the viral publisher unveiled its Fall 2020 show slate, which comprises returning hits like BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime and Worth It -- returning for their seventh and ninth seasons, respectively.
Cocoa Butter was founded in 2015 by editors Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton to showcase authenticity within Black culture, BuzzFeed says, as well as to involve Black voices in every step of the creative process. Initially publishing content under the auspices of the larger BuzzFeed brand, Cocoa Butter subsequently became a standalone entity, launching its first Facebook Watch series in 2019 dubbed The Era. The Era examined notable Black cultural moments from the 90s, with appearances from Eve, Taye Diggs, Questlove, and Loretta Devine.

In 2019, a new singer-guitarist from London with the intriguing name Beabadoobee released “I Wish I Was Stephen Malkmus,” an immediately addictive swirl of buzzing guitars and lyrics about her blue hair and mutable moods and sitting at home crying to Pavement while loving every minute of her journey from whatever’s now to whatever’s next. Bea Kristi, the singer-guitarist who records as Beabadoobee, was born in 2000, a year after Malkmus’ iconic band broke up, but she clearly had an impeccable gift for putting her own spin on Nineties indie-rock.

Panelists Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke even thought such famous names as Patti Labelle, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J and Bjork might be hiding behind the Flower mask.

The man sitting across from me in a burgundy Def Jam letterman jacket and matching Jordan 12 Retro Bordeauxs has changed irrevocably since we met back in May. Yk Osiris has shed much of the boyish charm he possessed back then; now, he’s full of the unique brand of self-confidence (with a tinge of supreme arrogance) that’s reserved for newly minted R&b stars. On the cover of Yk’s debut album, The Golden Child, he’s Photoshopped in front of the Egyptian pyramids, reclining on a golden throne,...

“The Masked Singer” delivered another elimination this week with the Eagle, who was later revealed to be Dr. Drew Pinsky, being sent home. This brings the total number of ousted performers to four. Normani is about to make “Waves.” The singer has ventured out on her own since her group Fifth Harmony went on hiatus, and now she’s nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best R&b Video for her collaboration with 6lack. The video for “Waves” premiered in February and has been viewed more than nine million times on YouTube as of this writing (watch it above). Can she beat her all-star rivals including Childish Gambino (“Feels Like Summer”) and Alicia Keys (“Raise a Man”)? Our odds say yes, especially with support from her legion of Harmonizer fans.
This is Normani’s first Vma nomination as a solo artist, but she has already got a few Moonmen on her mantel thanks to Fifth Harmony. She won four awards with that group: Artist to Watch for “Miss Movin’ On” (2014), Best Collaboration for “Work from Home” with Ty Dolla $ign and...

Ann Marie is an R&B star in a world that’s currently low on them. Much of her style feels like an anomaly: R&B’s streaming elite are typically mysterious mush-mouthed singers who forgo longing for drug-fueled existential dread. Ann Marie, along with a new class of singers like Ella Mai and Jacquees, offers an alternative, a sound modeled on the upbeat singers of the late ’90s and early 2000s rather than the dystopian haze put forward more recently
Marie’s voice is sweet and lilting, and her lyrics balance acidity with sincerity.

Sometime today, BuzzFeed News will launch a footer at the bottom of its news stories that will ask readers to donate between $5 and $100 to “help us report to you,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
However, this doesn’t mean BuzzFeed plans to put its stories behind a paywall. Donations are on an if-you-want-to basis, and people who donate now will get exclusive updates on BuzzFeed investigations and programming. If enough interest is shown, BuzzFeed may introduce a more full-fledged membership program in the future, and offer more perks, according to the Journal -- which notes that BuzzFeed has no immediate plans to charge readers for access.
BuzzFeed wants to boost news revenue and is taking after other outlets, like The Guardian, that have chosen to ask readers for donations instead of implementing a paywall. That BuzzFeed is looking for more money isn’t a surprise, given it missed its...

Danielle Bradbery and Thomas Rhett team up on the wistful new duet “Goodbye Summer,” an updated version of Bradbery’s solo tune “Hello Summer.”
It’s a deceptive title, implying blue skies and tan lines along with every other popular country cliché. While those things do hover in the background, the story centers more on an intense, fleeting relationship that evaporates like a mirage when the season is over. “Hello summer, goodbye to my heart,” sings Bradbery, but by the end she’s changed her tune: “Goodbye summer, you tore me apart.
