While it's not uncommon for the character of Anne Lister to break the fourth wall by occasionally looking at the camera furtively when other characters are present or blatantly addressing the audience when she is along, this episode contains a unique and creative application of the technique. Ms. Walker asks Ms. Lister if she has 'ever done anything like this before' referring to physical relations with another woman. Lister lies and says 'no, of course not' and immediately proceeds to look knowingly at the camera to bring the audience in on the deception. Ms. Walker then asks, "what are you looking at?". This is a rare occurrence indeed as most movies/shows don't allow a second character to intrude on the breaking of the fourth wall as it can disrupt the inside nature of the joke. In this case however, the unexpected revelation that Ms. Walker detects the furtive glance makes for an even more comical aside as it's a departure from most applications of this narrative technique.
In this episode, we learn that Anne is 41.
