Very brave ending, loved it
saradoree15 September 2021
This is relatable on so many levels, as I'm in age when everyone tries so much to glue themselves to someone in order to settle down and fulfill classic cliche expectations, they often forget about their own ambitions on the way.

The movie highlights it can be fun to focus on making yourself happy and successful first, as we don't necessarily need other person to live a good quality life.

I loved the ending and wish there were more inspiring stories out there that contradict what often makes us miserable.

Let's end this biased ageism for good, people. Let's just live !!!

Good For Those Who Like Rom-Coms
bugger-170717 August 2020
I liked this movie. I will say, it's made for people who like romantic comedies, that is the target audience. Also, it wasn't really funny. It contains one laugh-out-loud moment, which was also included in the trailer.

Regardless, I had a good time watching, it's sort of a look at a 39-year-old woman finding her way in life and just seeing her get used to probably ending up alone. The main character is not the most likeable person in the world, but I could sympathize with her. The movie contains a lot of coded messages, no doubt aiming to educate and inspire the moure young viewers, but they do stick out in a noticeable way when you watch as an adult.

The good part about the film was how comforting it was, it demonstrated that you can find contentment in life just by prioritizng your own wants. It's not the most life-changing movie you will ever see, but it was a nice way to pass the time.

Glad didn't miss this

I won't say it's something huge of the movie. Just discuss a topic that single or not via a funny way. Feel life is more complete somehow when single in Gaby case. Be open minded, don't be judgemential, everyone hv their own choice. Love the concept.

Better than first impressions
malpasc-391-91538022 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was a total random choice. One of those where I think to myself "I need to justify my Sky movies subscription and actually watch something". I tend to steer towards the indie, horror or comedy sections. Anyway, this appeared in the indie section and sounded OK from the description given.

Within the first 15 minutes I did think about switching this off because it just felt a bit flat and boring, like it didn't know where it was going. This is no Bridget Jones's Diary in terms of romantic comedy about thirty something singletons.

But as it progressed I actually came to appreciate that there were no big comedy moments or set-ups. Everything kind of flowed along naturally and the comedy came subtly through the script rather than it being thrown at you. Some people might find the "naturalistic" look to the movie difficult. It looks to have been shot totally using real locations rather than on a sound stage, and the script kind of feels like how people actually speak in the real world.

The ending is actually kind of nice, and shows that women can be valued and value themselves on more than just being a girlfriend/wife/lover. If you're looking for a big romcom run through the airport or lovely wedding then don't watch this.

Substance over style.
Alexander_Law13 October 2020
It felt to me like this film was more about the substance rather than the style.

What I took from it was the realisation of the stigma and pressure that we as a society put on single women who don't want to have kids. This is an important message however it felt like they started off with this and said, okay let's build our story and characters around it in order to further explain this message, as opposed to having the foundation of the story and characters in place first.

So for most of the film I felt like it was trying to get this message across to me by creating characters with different view points so our main protagonist could make her point. This in turn took away any real interest in the story or connection with the characters and made it feel like I was watching little snippets of interactions.

If you are a Chelsea Pretti fan, or someone who enjoys a slow paced rom-com, then you will like it. For me personally I'm on the fence. Yes bits of it were good but collectively it just didn't grab my attention.

Meh
randykrus16 June 2021
I'm trying to categorize this movie....it wasn't funny...it wasn't drama....it wasn't serious....it wasn't....interesting. It was however, boring....which is why I quit half way through. A dull character with a dull life does not make an interesting movie.

I was pleasantly surprised.
davesykes13 July 2021
Not my style but I liked it a lot. I thought the movie was good. It feels like you are watching real people being real. Definitely not a Romantic Comedy. More like a slice of someone's life.

I clicked on that movie because I like Chelsea Peretti. I think her Stand-Up is great and she's the only reason I kind of half watched Brooklyn 99. After watching this movie I like her even a little more. In short: Not a Romantic Comedy , more a slice of real life.

Terrible

Only realized this was a comedy when I came to IMDB to review it. Not funny in the slightest, boring and a bit depressing.

Gina: a Brooklyn Nine nine story
robert-62387-5543514 February 2021
If you like Brooklyn Nine-Nine you'll love this show She basically is exactly the same character Gina, that pretentious obnoxious funny character she played on Brooklyn Nine nine. She shoots from the hip and say whatever is on her mind regardless of how it comes off.

Great Movie - Very Underrated!
jonathansarpong9 August 2020
First off, the fact this movie has a 5.1 review score is ridiculous. This film is not so much a romcom as it is a realistic portrayal of how and where women can find value in different areas of their lives in the absence of romantic relationships. If is really well acted, and Chelsea Perretti hits all the right marks.

Good movie
gani_tosseva18 September 2021
I like it. It tells the story of a girl, that is brave enough to look for love, even it never happens. She doesn't settle just with somebody to have company, she is looking for meaningful relationship.

An easy-going, decent comedy.
SnobReviews14 August 2020
Thankfully for Chelsea Peretti's committed performance, "Spinster" succeeds at being different than most rom-com's even though it's script could've used some re-working.

In this comedy, after her boyfriend breaks up with her on her birthday, a woman tackles her fears of loneliness and what it means to be single.

An easy-going and sometimes funny film that really showcases Peretti's acting chops. I did feel as though "Spinster" lagged at some points and wondered if scenes could've been altered or re-worked. Some of the jokes didn't land as you'd expect them too but it's still a decent enough film to get through on a gloomy evening.

shmailmail27 December 2020
It's can be parts two because it's look like presuicidal story. it' can be helpful for parents to scare teenage daughters: this is what happens if you reach 30 ... a really depressing pessimistic movie without any hope probably this is a video for a psychiatry textbook. mostly sad that it's look like real story. in certain point. every chance will be lose p,s Those who say that there are films: good, bad, very bad and Indian simply do not know about the existence of Canadian cinema. no for real nice costumes, actors, closes and furniture almost perfect operators works but so boring.

No, it isn't a rom-com
galaescobar19 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
People describing this as a rom-com are probably why it has such a low rating. I'd call it a coming of age tale for women closing in on 40. There are comedic moments, there are caustic moments, there are heart warming moments, just like life. I love Chelsea Peretti and movies that respect the non-cookie-cutter beauty of life. If you do, too, you'll probably dig this movie.

Understated but so good
linda-846-9070139 September 2020
This is one of those quiet indies that you start off thinking "why am I watching this" and end up going "that was one of the greatest movies!" I really loved it. Peretti's portrayal of the anger and hurt was so real and the growth felt earned. I really loved the changes in the cinematography and colors that mirrored her character arc. Definitely going to watch this one again.

Spinster
rnixon-1566324 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spinster 2020 15 Director: Andrea Dorfman Starring: Chelsea Parretti, Susan Kent, Charlie Boyle, Bill Carr, David Rossetti, Nadia Tonen, Kirsten Olivia Taylor etc

Overall rating 92/100

Spinster is about a 39 year old caterer, who has not found the right man for her, she must go on a journey within herself to find what she really wants in life and focus on herself. Wow Spinster was fantastic, and offered something relatively fresh in terms of themes and perspectives of love, so let's talk about this more in detail.

First of all, the film had likeable characters, a great main performance and chemistry between characters. I thought the main comedic performance from Chelsea Peretti was fantastic, she made this movie for me, she was instantly likeable as soon as she appeared on screen, with heaps of charm and relatability with her character she was just a delight to watch, most of the characters in the film were also incredibly likeable, with different views and perspectives on love to balance out the argument made by Chelsea's character. A lot of the character and actors had fantastic chemistry as well, I really liked a lot of the relationships that were developed and created in this movie especially, with Chelsea Peretti and Nadia Tonen as well as Kirsten Olivia Taylor. Both characters of Liza and Adele, really served a purpose as there own characters but also with developing Gaby's character as well, both filled a whole that Gaby as a character was missing throughout the movie, having a child, and a friend who has similar attitudes to you in terms of love, so this was great, and all the actors had instant chemistry when on screen with each other.

My next few positives would be the charming tone, humour, and Different themes on love. The film just had an instant charming tone, this was largely due to the connection to the main character, and her finding herself and delivering a different and non- generic message to the audience gave Spinster a charm that never went away. The film was also very funny, the type of relatable and blunt humour by Chelsea Peretti was right up my street, and made me laugh out loud on multiple different occasions balancing it's tones perfectly. I also really liked the different themes on love to other movies like this. I loved that the movie showed different themes to the usual generic rom com movie, it made it okay for women to be by themselves and too be happy, and also highlighted women wanting to focus on Careers first which reflects more on women in society today which is a good thing.

My only couple of negatives would be the rushed pacing and the slightly awkward performances/characters. The movie did feel very rushed for me in places, this made the impact of some heartfelt scenes or scenes for development for the characters didn't sink in as well as perhaps they could of done, I also found some of the performances fairly awkward to watch, the performances from Susan Kent Bill Carr were not great and I didn't connect to their characters whenever they were on screen and they were just awkward to watch on screen.

My final few positives would be the great character arc, clever script and unique and satisfying ending. The character arc for Gaby was one of the best parts of the movie, every scene or character contributed towards her arc and change as a person, and made her the person she was at the end of the movie, so it was well thought out and really made you connect with her character, the script was also really clever in terms of expressing different views of love an balancing the arguments for both, there was really insightful and clever things said about the pressures and stereotypes for women as well as contradicting that with insights into single women's life or regrets/ not needing to have kids which was great, and finally Spinster had a clever and unique ending, even if they went with the teased romantic ending I would have been happy due it feeling well earned and very charming, but in a way I am glad they made it a very satisfying end for Gaby as a character, accepting focusing on herself and her career and not needing a romantic relationship to do that so this was great.

Overall, despite a few off performances and slight pacing issues, Spinster is a charming and funny rom com. Which highlights Chelsea Peretti's comedic talents with a unique and fresh feeling rom com that doesn't go for the generic plot that you are used to.

Finally a movie that celebrates single women
melodyso26 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a lifelong single person. And I can't tell you how comforting it feels to see single women being celebrated in the big screen. I'm so sick of every movie all about finding someone.

This movie is really humorous and warm and just natural. Chelsea did a great job playing this sassy confident goofy person. I love that it doesn't hestitate to clap back at ridiculous single shaming. And thank God it didn't end with someone showing up and magically making everything better.

I had a great time watching this! Definitely hope that more and more films and movies will finally get on and realise that not everyone has to get paired up to be happy.
