Madonna‘s “Lucky Star” might not be as famous as “Like Virgin” or “Like a Prayer,” but it has an incredible dance groove. The song’s producer discussed what he thought of the track. He also revealed what he thought of the Queen of Pop before she was the Queen of Pop.
Madonna’s producer said the final version of ‘Lucky Star’ is barely like the original
Reggie Lucas was the producer of Madonna’s self-titled first album. While Lucas is not a household name, he had a huge influence on the style of music known as post-disco, as well as dance music as a whole. During a 2013 interview with The Atlantic, Lucas discussed working with the Material Girl on the album.
“I’d write songs and put them on a little cassette player with me singing, and I can’t sing,” he said. “I’d ask Madonna if she liked them,...

Inside Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre on a recent afternoon, Huey Lewis has some actual good news. Checking his texts, he learns that Martin Short will be attending the opening of The Heart of Rock and Roll, the rom-com musical based around songs from his catalog. Also on the list for the first-night celebration are Michael J. Fox and the members of Lewis’ band, the News.
But anyone expecting Lewis to jump onstage and join the cast in song will be disappointed. “Can’t do it,” he says resolutely.

Miley Cyrus recently performed a powerhouse rendition of Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” during a stripped-down set at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.
No stranger to covers of iconic songs, the pop star began her version of “Psycho Killer” with alternative lyrics before launching into the track’s chorus. Watch a clip of the performance below, followed by the original song.
The live cover comes after it was announced in January that Cyrus will be involved in an upcoming tribute album version of Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense from A24. The 16-track project will see artists including Paramore (who already released their cover of “Burning Down the House”), Lorde, and The National covering songs from the band’s soundtrack to their 1984 concert film, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The trailer for Henry Cavill and Dua Lip’s new movie Argylle includes two classic rock songs. One of them is Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” The use of the song is flattering in one way, but it isn’t doing any favors for Elvis’ posthumous image.
The ‘Argylle’ trailer uses David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ and Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicious Minds’
Here’s a summary of the Argylle trailer. It starts with a 007-esque spy dancing with a glamorous woman to David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.” The scene is elegant, and “Let’s Dance” is an elegant dance song if there ever was one.
We then learn these characters are the fictional creations of an author named Elly Conway. In the real world, criminals feel that Conway is predicting their lives through their books so they target her. The tone of the film gets more comic and a remix of “Suspicious Minds” plays.

Two classic rock stars helped write David Bowie’s “Fame”: Bowie himself and John Lennon. Looking back on the song, Bowie said it was inspired by John’s attitude toward art. Both rock stars were part of a border movement that shook the art world to its core. Notably, “Fame” was much more popular in the United States than it was in the United Kingdom.
David Bowie’s ‘Fame’ was inspired by a conversation he had with John Lennon
The three writers behind “Fame” were Bowie, John, and Carlos Alomar. Alomar is a rock and soul musician known for collaborating with Bowie and Mick Jagger. According to American Songwriter, Bowie gave an interview to MTV in 1995. In it, he discussed working on the song with John. “It came out of a conversation that we had,” Bowie recalled.

The legendary Nile Rodgers brought a whole lot of funk to the NPR office for the latest iteration of their Tiny Desk Concert series.
Rodgers’ six-song setlist serves as a useful reminder of just how ubiquitous his music is. He and his Chic bandmates kicked things off with their 1978 disco classic “Le Freak,” the whoops and hollers of the vocalists meshing with those from the equally-energized audience.
“Obviously, every song we’re gonna play today is a song I wrote,” Rodgers said between songs with a smile, laughing off the braggadocio of the statement. But bragging is absolutely called for when you’ve written tunes like Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” all of which Rodgers also performed at the Tiny Desk.

Nile Rodgers and Chic brought the “maximum funkocity” to Nrp’s Tiny Desk, delivering a half-hour set of classics from both the Chic catalogue and songs co-written by Rodgers himself.
The set opened with Chic’s “Le Freak,” and from there went on to feature Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out, Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (all co-written by Rodgers), Chic’s own “Good Times” interpolated with the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” and concluded with the David Bowie/Rodgers collabo “Let’s Dance.

True, the title of writer-director Brett Morgen’s documentary about David Bowie, Moonage Daydream, refers to the song of the same name from Bowie’s classic 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. But it could also be said to describe the feeling that Morgen inspires with the impressionistic way that he renders the life and art of the glam-rock icon on screen. Even more so than in Cobain: Montage of Heck, his 2015 film about Kurt Cobain, Morgen is less interested in factual biography than in eliciting a sense of the man as an artist and personality.
The means by which Morgen accomplishes his goal are startling to behold. For the film, the David Bowie Estate gave Morgen access to a wealth of rare recordings, films, drawings, and journals, and he hasn’t shied away from showing off that access on screen. Moonage Daydream...

Some stars had an influence on classic rock so pervasive they managed to inspire the old guard. Case in point, David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” was an inspiration for one of Paul McCartney’s solo albums. Paul made the album with one of Bowie’s 1970s punk peers. On the same token, Bowie discussed how The Beatles influenced his lyrics for “Space Oddity.”

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.

Alejandro G Iñárritu is something of a marmite filmmaker – and what’s more, he seems to love it. Attracting a cult following early in his career, he has become more and more self-indulgent over time, to the point where this particular, semi-autobiographical work will test even his most devoted fans. That’s not so much because of its subject matter as because of the cinematography, which may have attracted an Oscar nomination and may be very effective in places but which, over the course of more than two and a half hours, becomes exhausting to watch.
Almost entirely shot on Panavision Sphero lenses, the film has a mild fishbowl effect which works very well in places – notably a dancehall scene scored by an a capella version of David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. It requires the visual cortex to work much harder than usual, however, so that some viewers will become nauseous or.

Thirty or so minutes into Angela Schanelec’s Music, a character makes a startling discovery. We’re inside a prison on the outskirts of an unidentified Greek town, where Jon (Aliocha Schneider) is to spend a manslaughter sentence. And we’re watching him bathed in the cell’s cold light when he suddenly opens his mouth and starts to sing. It’s a moment that shatters the film, one of the loudest in a tale otherwise marked by wistful silences. Jon’s stuck a grocery list of classical composers to the wall, and he intones an aria from Vivaldi’s Il Giustino, “Vedrò con mio diletto.” It’s the first time we hear him sing and it amounts to an otherworldly revelation, both for the young man crooning and those of us who listen: a human being waking up to a superpower.
There’s a tendency to write off Schanelec’s cinema in medical terms.

“Aurora,” the once fictional album imagined by Taylor Jenkins Reid in her best-selling novel “Daisy Jones & the Six” has come to life with 11 of the 25 original songs written for Prime Video’s TV show adaptation. Blake Mills and Tony Berg reimagined songs Reid listed in the back of her book for “Aurora,” enlisting collaborators like Marcus Mumford, Phoebe Bridgers and more to write and record the album.
But in addition to the original Daisy Jones & the Six songs, classic 70s rock and roll hits like Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” and The Byrds’ “Goin’ Back” set the scene for the collision of Daisy Jones and rock band The Six, who rocket to fame together, echoing the dynamic of Fleetwood Mac, Civil Wars and The Eagles to name a few.

One of the greatest honors someone can receive from the United Kingdom is receiving a knighthood. However, not everyone wants the title. This included rock star David Bowie.
Who gets to be knighted by the British monarchy?
Anyone can be nominated for knighthood (or damehood for women), but they must meet the monarch’s criteria. The nominee will have made an important contribution to the UK and the world, inspiring and influencing others with their work. Only citizens of the UK can officially be made knights or dames. However, people from all over the world can receive an honorary version of the title.

David Bowie was one of the most popular and influential artists of all time, from his groundbreaking music to his boundary-pushing fashion sense. Many artists think highly of him. But Bowie had his own opinions on his musical peers, including an unfavorable view of Paul McCartney’s music.
David Bowie’s legendary career as a musician and actor
Bowie took an interest in music in the early ’60s, while he was still just a teenager. He joined bands, including the Konrads and the King Bees. But it wasn’t until he went solo that he found success.
In 1967, he released his debut album, David Bowie. The work that followed, including the albums The Man Who Sold the World, and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, cemented his status as an avant-garde rock star.

Taylor Hawkins was sunshine incarnate. The late Foo Fighters drummer – also a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist – had an unrivalled sense of positivity and joie de vivre. His megawatt smile could power a stadium show all of its own.
The first of two tribute concerts to Hawkins, who died aged 50 in March this year, does its utmost to summon that same energy. Gathered here at Wembley Stadium are some of Hawkins’s closest friends – the surviving Foos members, of course – family, collaborators and admirers, for a six-hour marathon of a show. Understandably, the mood that fills the 80,000-capacity venue is a strange one. Hawkins’s favourite songs are played ahead of the late-afternoon start time – Abba, Elo, George Michael – but no one feels like dancing just yet.

As part of its commitment to support genre films, the Cnc will back La Grande Magie by Noémie Lvovsky, Don Juan by Serge Bozon and Tralala by Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu. Launched in 2018 in the name of fantasy, science-fiction and horror movies, the Cnc’s dedicated support system for genre films this year honed its gaze on musical films, and the jury, presided over by Christophe Honoré, has subsequently selected three projects which will each receive assistance to the tune of up to 500,000 euros. Among the lucky few, we find La Grande Magie, which will be Noémie Lvovsky’s 7th full-length work, on the heels of Oublie-moi, Life Doesn’t Scare Me (in competition in Locarno in 1999), Feelings (a Venice competitor in 2003), Let’s Dance (rewarded with a Best Actor gong in Karlovy Vary 2008), Camille Rewinds (Directors’ Fortnight 2012 and 13 nominations at the 2013 Césars)...

“As I’m about to turn 80, I’d like to think I’ve become wise in some ways,” Tina Turner just told Rolling Stone. But there’s never been a revival like Tina’s Eighties comeback. She became a solo superstar when she was 44. Things like that just don’t happen. (For context: That’s how old Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, Mark Ronson, and Jack White are now.)

Netflix has released their list of everything coming and going throughout the month of December.
There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that we’re gaining Season 2 of “You,” which features Penn Badgley as a handsome murderer who seems to kill the women he loves the most. In a surprising twist, we’re also getting the 2005 classic, “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” and other highlights like Ian Somerhalder’s new vampire show “V Wars,” “Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah,” and the new Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson-led film “Marriage Story.”
The bad news is, we’re losing Season 7-11 of Anthony’s Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown.” We’re also losing “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Billy Elliott,” “Rain Man,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Rocky” I-v.
