The BBC has picked up Irish crime drama Kin from Fifth Season.
The RTÉ series, which aired in the U.S. on AMC+, is the latest high-profile show snapped up by the BBC buying team, following the likes of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire. It is produced by Joker financier Bron Studios and Man in the High Castle outfit Headline Pictures.
Kin stars Clare Dunne (Herself), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones). It follows gang wars in Dublin. A boy is killed and his family embarks on a gangland war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. The Kinsellas are a local crime family, while the Cunningham cartel is a vast global organization.
“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications,” said Sue Deeks,...

Composer Chanda Dancy had roughly two months to create more than four hours of orchestra music for The Defeated, the Netflix series about life in Berlin following World War II.
She recorded with an 85-piece orchestra in Prague as well as solo elements in her studio in Pasadena. She crafted music of that time but added modern sensibilities. She mixed the sound of a grand, sweeping orchestra with synthesizers and elements of Edm.
And she met that incredibly short deadline.
“This was essentially like being asked to swim from Los Angeles to Japan,” Dancy tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Me not knowing how long that distance is — I was like, ‘I can do that in a couple hours. I’m a good swimmer.’ It really didn’t sink in until I was done, honestly.”

In writer-director Todd Field’s awards season favorite Tár, Cate Blanchett’s performance as the (fictional) world-famous conductor Lydia Tár is the thespian equivalent of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony: as full of monumental gestures and emotional bombast and just as impossible to resist. She’s the first woman to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic and an Egot winner to boot, but she’s also a monstrous genius who has clawed her way to the top of the classical music world with little regard for the people she has used and abused along the way. Over the course of the film, like the plot of any good opera, Lydia Tár’s heroic triumph is followed by her tragic fall from grace, as the maestro becomes a victim of “cancel culture” and, more accurately, her own egotistical excesses.

“Devotion,” says composer Chanda Dancy, “is about true eternal love. How do you translate love for family, love for your fellow man, love for your country, into music? That’s what the director and I wanted to create.”
Dancy’s score for the J.D. Dillard film about an African-American pilot who became a Korean War hero is among its biggest assets: a work for massive orchestra that underlines the thrill of flight, the dangers of war, and the close emotional ties forged between fellow airmen along with their families waiting back home.
It took 109 Nashville musicians eight days of recording to complete the score for “Devotion,” and if Academy voters recognize the accomplishment, Dancy could become the first Black woman to be nominated for best original score.
Dillard hired her more than two years ago, even before shooting began. The first theme she wrote (titled “Measure of a Man”) was...

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers through Episode 6.
For its first five episodes, Star Trek: Prodigy has mostly established its own identity, free and separate from the rest of the Trek franchise. Yes, a holographic Captain Janeway is an essential part of the crew, and yes, several episodes have touched on themes we’ve seen before. But, in terms of making nitty-gritty references to the larger canon of Trek, Prodigy has kept things pretty low-key. Until now…
After taking a brief hiatus, Prodigy Season 1 is back with episode 6 titled just “Kobayashi.” In it, Dal (Brett Gray) takes a 24th-century version of the famous Kobayashi Maru test, and in doing so, brings along some classic Trek characters for the ride. And, if some of these lines of the dialogue sounded familiar, they should have. With one exception, all the dialogue spoken by Dal’s greatest-hits holodeck crew comes from existing Star Trek episodes and films.

Nielsen has released its latest report on the most-viewed streaming television shows — and No. 1 on the list will shock you!
Click this link to find out… oh, never mind. It’s “Clickbait,” the limited series that premiered August 25 on Netflix. The eight-episode thriller, which stars Adrian Grenier, Betty Gabriel, and Zoe Kazan, was viewed for 912 million minutes from August 23 to August 29, garnering nearly twice as many views as runner-up “Outer Banks,” which has been the top-rated show on Nielsen’s reports for several weeks. “Outer Banks” was viewed for 483 million minutes during the aforementioned time frame, per Nielsen’s latest report.
Per Netflix, “Clickbait” focuses on Nick Brewer (Grenier), a loving father, husband, and brother, who one day suddenly and mysteriously disappears. A video appears on the internet of the badly beaten Nick holding a card that says, “I abuse women. At 5 million views, I die.” Is this a threat or a confession?...

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

Brand New Cherry Flavor looks like one of the wildest shows of the year -- and that's a good thing.
Netflix on Friday dropped the full-length trailer.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down because of how out there it was, but it looks exciting.
"Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie," reads the logline.
"But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways, and a dream project turns into a nightmare," it continues.
"This particular nightmare has zombies, hit men, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people."
"And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive."
Sounds like a nightmare, right?

Darren Star, who received the honorary Golden Nymph during the opening ceremony of the 60th Monte-Carlo Television Festival, talked about his career debut and discussed what’s next with “Emily in Paris” and his next show with Netflix, “Uncoupled.”
“Uncoupled,” which Star is doing in partnership with Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”), is about a newly single gay man who has to navigate the dating scene as a man in his 40s after his husband of 17 years walks out on him.
Star suggested the single-camera comedy isn’t being created as a niche show, but rather a series with a broad appeal that’s about the “very universal experience” of “being in a relationship that ends very subtly and abruptly after so many years.”

2021’s totally online NATPE Virtual Miami is just but half over. Some inkling of how it might shape out, however, is fast falling into place.
Basically, streaming stole the show. Yes, Fox did announce during NATPE that the Jay Leno-hosted “You Bet Your Life” reboot, bowing this fall, has sold in 85% of the U.S. Yet a once annual launchpad for shows seeking U.S. syndication was dominated this time round by the seismic pivot of Hollywood’s majors and other players into global VOD platforms, and the impact of this tectonic shunt on the industry at large.
Dominating NATPE-related business announcements and online panel discussions, that impact is inevitable.
But it didn’t always play out in the most obvious fashion.
Following, six – somewhat provisional – takeaways from this year’s NATPE Miami, focused on its international business:
The Big Swings
During NATPE, Paramount Plus set a March 4 launch date for the U.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I've spent 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out. This is the final Forgotten By Fox entry."Have you ever seen any of your victims?" Robert Shaw is asked mid-way through End of the Game (1975), a line borrowed from The Third Man (1949). This I take to be author Friedrich Dürrenmatt's revenge, on behalf of his native Switzerland, for Orson Welles' celebrated crack about the cuckoo clock in Carol Reed's thriller, which appeared just before he wrote the book this film is based on.End of the Game is adapted from Dürrenmatt's 1950 novel The Judge and His Hangman by the author himself and Maximilian Schell, who also directs, inventively if a little inconsistently. Some scenes have the correct tragic force...

With depictions of pandemic catastrophes, war, failing empires, the divide between rich and poor, shooting rampages and massive power outages, Germany’s newest TV shows appear to reflect the current apocalyptic zeitgeist.
German broadcasters and streaming services alike are going heavy on suspense, crime, psychological thrillers, action and adventure, often colored by themes of societal disruption and armed conflict.
Showrunner Christian Alvart (“Dogs of Berlin”) was in production with Zdf Enterprise’s new series “Sløborn” well before the Covid-19 pandemic but the storyline was eerily prescient: A community on the North Sea island of Sløborn is slowly devastated when a deadly virus begins killing residents while being largely ignored by most of the population until it’s too late. Alvart says he wanted to make a series about a crisis that occurs because people are too occupied with their daily lives to take the situation seriously.

For a fan of Friday Night Lights, it’s hard to sit across from Taylor Kitsch and not picture high-school bad boy Tim Riggins, the character — part womanizer, part wounded man-child — Kitsch played for five seasons in the acclaimed, Emmy-winning NBC drama.
But Kitsch has spent the last decade of his career carving out a darker path, with stand-out roles in Ryan Murphy’s TV movie The Normal Heart, on the second season of True Detective, and as cult leader David Koresh in Paramount Network’s Waco.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out.And now they've quietly disappeared William Fox's name from the company: guilty by association with Rupert Murdoch, even though he never associated with him.***I believe David Thomson once said something about Fox's fifties output being "the antithesis of cinema," which is very slightly nuts if you consider the films of Samuel Fuller (Pick-Up on South Street among others), Nicholas Ray (Bigger Than Life), Frank Tashlin (The Girl Can't Help It), and more. But we sort of know what he means: the advent of CinemaScope caused aesthetic confusion, as technical advances often do, and we can all picture laundry lines of less-than-fresh 1940s actors eking out their remaining B.

Exclusive: Antoine Fuqua is set to direct the Bron Studios feature Siege of Bethlehem based on the book A Season in Bethlehem: Unholy War in a Sacred Place written by former Newsweek Jerusalem bureau chief Joshua Hammer. I hear Fuqua will direct Siege of Bethlehem following his Will Smith Apple Studios’ movie Emancipation. That runaway slave action thriller, as Deadline first told you, was the biggest film festival acquisition deal in history, netting out to $120M.
Bron is producing Siege of Bethlehem alongside Michael Kase, from a screenplay co-written by Avi Issacharoff (Fauda), the Palestinian and Arab Affairs Correspondent for Haaretz, and Matt Cook, a military veteran who served two combat tours in Iraq.
Inspired by a true story, Siege of Bethlehem tells how a Muslim, an Israeli Jew, and a Christian American came together to prevent a battle from breaking out between the...

Newman in 1953, not long before the one title he's semi-remembered for, This Island Earth. It seems to have been greenlit as a B-picture to take advantage of the sets built for Fox's Titanic, as it's an ocean voyage mystery.Newlywed Jeanne Crain boards ship with her husband, who promptly vanishes, and nobody will admit to ever having seen him. Of course the plot kernel was used before, by writers Launder and Gilliat for director Hitchcock in The Lady Vanishes.

Mankiewicz, former producer at MGM, where Louis B. Mayer called him Joe Monkeybitch, became a top director at Fox, and his films there are spectacularly well-represented on streaming services today, along with Ford and Preminger, but one exception seems to be House of Strangers, his 1949 noir saga starring Richard Conte, Susan Hayward, and Edward G. Robinson. It's an unusual genre to find the urbane Mankiewicz dirtying his hands with. Robinson's presence is a throwback to the pre-Code gangland epics of Warner Bros., while the...

Hawks identified the key challenge of the first-person detective story: find a leading man interesting enough that the audience doesn't get bored of seeing him in every scene. Hawks hired Bogart.Dmytryk was lumbered with Dick Powell, but Powell stretched himself and Dmytryk did everything to make the surroundings interesting, even nightmarish. The third movie from the third major studio is Robert Montgomery...
