- Living in the shadows of his father's notoriety as the prime suspect in a New York mafia rub-out, a gangster with an identity crisis seeks to find out who murdered his wife on New Year's Eve, 1999.
- The film opens in the vicinity of Times Square, New York late at night in 2018. Over a montage of street images we hear the theme music 'The Things We Do' by Joe Mcgruddy. We are then introduced to Michael Trudon (Al Carretta) and his girlfriend Karen May (Stacey Pomeroy) entering a nightclub. Michael then begins his voiceover and details his life as an ageing mafiosi who still can't understand what happened to his life after the events of New Year's Eve 1999 when his former girlfriend Lana (Zoe Lewin) was shot dead in the same nightclub.
As a flashback to Lana fades to white. Michael explains to Karen that he is a protected FBI informant. Karen refuses to believe Michael and effectively concludes the relationship. Michael is then seen visiting Maurice Jones (Sonny Barr) and his right hand man Caesar (Daniele Bertolucci). Maurice gives Michael vital information about Karen whilst suggesting to him if he gives up the whereabouts of his father he could still claim a price from rival crews.
The action then flashes back to 1974 and we witness Michael's father, Donnie DiMaggio Senior, carry out a cold blooded execution of at least three men in a nightclub in a partial clown suit. The plot moves forward to 1991 and DiMaggio has a restaurant sit down with his step-daughter Marie Vincenzo (Diana Vassalo). Here we learn that DiMaggio has never been caught and it is only local journalists on public access television who have taken an interest in the historical mafia rub-out. Michael Trudon's voiceover then links the action to his childhood and the presence of his Lawyer (Laura Shipler Chico) who explains to Michael's stepmother (Charlotte Reidie) that seeing his dying grandmother (Julie Bevan) will be financially beneficial to him.
Michael visits his grandmother in hospital and learns that his name is actually Donald DiMaggio Junior and there are many people who can tell him about his father's life in the mafia. One of these people is Rebecca Michaels (Katy Federman) who gives Michael a modified flag gun on instruction that he never takes it out of the box and hides it. After Michael receives the gun he then meets the lawyer who informs he has inherited $1.8 million dollars.
The action then jumps back to 2018. Control (Ezekiel Martin) is an FBI agent watching the flat Michael and Karen reside in. Karen is watched because she is potentially Liliana or Catina Petrovic - twins who were trafficked into America via Mexico many years previously. Michael is aware of this and is using them as leverage to get closer to Nicolai (Paul Kelleher), an Eastern European gangster who is of immense interest to the FBI who poses as the girls' father. Michael interrogates Karen and we learn that he has actually saved her from her father, who has placed a contract on her. As Michael unravels the mystery, we learn of her connection to mafia associate Carlo (Paul Bridger) who was a friend of Michael's father Donnie and role model to the twins. Knowing the operation is becoming dangerous Michael reveals to Karen everything he knows about her.
Maurice then explains to Michael that he has been trying to divert problems away from him behind the scenes. As Karen's complete involvement with the situation becomes apparent, Michael walks away from her knowing he now faces bigger concerns.
The action flashes back to 1991. Lana tells Donnie about the significance of his Grandmother's apartment and her jewellery. We learn that Michael has given Karen the same jewellery he gave Lana as a means of identification. Michael's voiceover then reveals the twins were killers who took things too far and have been shot by an unidentified hitman.
In present day (2022), Michael has a sit down with Carlo hours before the officially designated time and place at a midtown New York restaurant. Michael has had a hit called on him from an unknown source and he is doing what he can to save his own life whilst relying on old mafia protocols to delay things. Calling on Carlo's prior association with his father, Michael knows Carlo's mishandling of the situation has created a problem. Carlo asks "Who is killing who?" and Michael quotes the ten mafiosi commandments back at him. This perplexes Carlo who realises he must obey the rules to save face. Michael then explains to Carlo that he learnt who'd killed Lana in 2018 and has begun to move on from his mafia life. We then learn that hitman Sonny Raymond (Joe Mcgruddy) has the job to kill Michael later in the evening.
The action then cuts to Karen in the presence of Maurice and Caesar. Not dead but revealed to actually be Lilian Petrovic, she describes her failed execution and survival behind the dead body of her sister, Catina. Cutting back to the sit down Michael then calls Carlo's bluff and identifies him as the decoy for the whole operation to take him out. Michael explains that he has been paid to take out Carlo but he has no interest in killing him. Michael's voiceover then explains that Karen has made a huge mistake turning up to Maurice when a price is already hanging over her head.
Michael then details the rest of the operation to Carlo. He pays him off and explains that if he does show up at the restaurant he will not hesitate to kill him and any associates he brings with him as Michael declares he is the "gangster my father never was".
