The lack of Latine representation in film today is disappointing when you consider Latines accounted for 29 percent of moviegoers in the States in 2020. And here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Latines also represent 26 percent of horror movie audiences, compared with 20 percent for other genres, according to a recent survey. Still, there's a marked lack of Latine actors starring in horror films. But Melissa Barrera's career has been challenging that. The horror and suspense queen has starred in several films within the genre in just the past few years, including "Scream," "Scream IV," "Bed Rest," and "Your Monster."
Her latest role is as Joey in "Abigail," a gory vampire film released April 19 about a group of criminals assigned to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crooked millionaire. Like a lot of Barrera's roles, Joey isn't your typical in-your-face Latina character. She's a war veteran with a dream to...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

:When it comes to teen coming-of-age movies, the premise of Hulu's "Miguel Wants to Fight" sounds pretty formulaic. Our hero Miguel wants to get into a fight before moving out of town and is helped by his group of loyal friends. Think "American Pie" but violence - rather than sex.
Director Oz Rodriguez's "Miguel Wants to Fight" is about trying to fit yourself into the mold society says you should be in. In this particular case, it's a physically aggressive male, which isn't true to who our protagonist is.
"This kid lives in a town where fighting is a big deal. Where boxing is a huge deal and his dad is a fighter," Rodriguez tells Popsugar, "Miguel would rather not. He just wants to watch movies and watch dudes beat up themselves."
Still, that's where Miguel finds himself, butting up against cultural norms that can be pretty limiting for Latino boys.

Shelter is the newest addition to the on-screen Harlan Coben Universe. A Young Adult-skewing eight-part thriller, it’s the story of high schooler Mickey Bolitar, who’s recently moved from overseas to his dad’s hometown of Kasselton, New Jersey, where he and his new friends investigate the disappearance of a fellow student. Like any Harlan Coben series, it takes place in a heightened world peopled by memorable villains, shock twists, cliff-hangers, and mysteries that change shape multiple times before they’re solved.
Mickey Bolitar is the star of three novels by Coben – a spin-off trilogy from his hit 11-part book series about Mickey’s uncle Myron Bolitar. Netflix has the rights to that character, so don’t expect to find an actor playing him in the cast rundown below. Here’s more on the actors telling this story.

Jaden Michael was well aware of Colin Kaepernick before he ever auditioned to play him in “Colin in Black & White.” The actor, perhaps best known for his lead role in 2020’s “Vampires vs. the Bronx,” respected Kaepernick not only as an athlete but also for his advocacy. Created by Kaepernick and Ava DuVernay, “Colin in Black & White” hits Netflix on Oct. 29 and details Kaepernick’s life as a teenager striving to become an NFL player, well before he famously began kneeling during the national anthem before San Francisco 49ers games to protest police brutality and systemic racism in the U.S.
I heard you found out you got the role of Colin on or around your 17th birthday.
My birthday is always really lucky. Last year I was celebrating “Vampires vs. the Bronx” coming out and secretly celebrating getting Colin. The year before, I was celebrating my birthday at BAFTA.

Vampires haunt modern-day Los Angeles in director Adam Randall’s Netflix horror film Night Teeth. Sprawling with glamour and style, the city of angels is on display in this fast-paced, campy thriller. There aren’t many scares here, and it doesn’t cover any new ground, but it makes up for that with a grounded story full of high tension and likable characters.
Vampires tried to take over the city of L.A., but Boyle heights (a historic neighborhood in Los Angeles), fought back against a Vampire take over, so humans and Vampires formed a truce. This was supposed to be a lasting Truce until Victor (Alfie Allen), a vampire middleman, started to kill off Vampire leaders. In Broadway history, there have been only a handful of musicals that center on U.S. Latinos, and only a fraction of those shows were written by people from the communities they were portraying on stage. That’s part of the reason why Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” made waves when it opened on Broadway back in 2008 (after a successful Off Broadway run). More than a decade later, and after a slight pandemic delay, Jon M. Chu’s cinematic adaptation of Miranda’s first musical promises to make an even bigger splash with its celebration of family, love, and the idea of home.

A underrated horror movie has been dominating Netflix all week. For the past several days, subscribers have been loving Dracula Untold, the 2014 supernatural, action-infused horror flick starring Beauty and the Beast actor Luke Evans as the titular legendary vampire. Ever since the 1st, the film has been occupying a spot on the Top 10 most-watched list and today, it sits at #3.
The movie tells the secret origins of Dracula, exploring his beginnings as great military hero Vlad Tepes in medieval Europe, who turns to the dark side – Anakin Skywalker-like – in order to gain the power to destroy his enemies and save those he cares about. As directed by Gary Shore, Untold takes little from Bram Stoker’s original novel, though it does share some concepts with Francis Ford Coppola’s version, and offers a big old reboot of the mythical monster.
Yes, this was one of Universal’s many attempts to relaunch their shared horror universe.

The horror genre is never going to go out of fashion, because audiences will never tire of the visceral reaction that comes from being scared out of their seats. There’s a reason why it’s the most profitable form of filmmaking in Hollywood, after all, with companies like Blumhouse churning out countless low risk and high reward titles that are almost always guaranteed to make money, regardless of how good or bad the reviews are.
Netflix may have set their sights on becoming a titan of the film industry on the same scale as the traditional major studios, but so far, the company haven’t focused as heavily on original horror movies as they have on other genres, which seems strange given the relatively low levels of investment required and the hefty viewing figures they would bring in.

Photo: 'Vampires vs the Bronx'/Netflix When I say bloodsucking monsters who invade your home to drain your life force, the first and obvious thought is landlords and Real Estate proprietors. However, your second thought is probably vampires and Netflix’s latest original 'Vampires vs the Bronx' is here to give you a perfectly creepy dose of both, just in time for Halloween. Written and Directed by Oz Rodriguez, Vampires vs. the Bronx is a terrifyingly funny horror based around Miguel Martinez and the largely Dominican population of a block in the Bronx when they begin to experience some uninvited guests. When local businesses begin closing down, all bought through an ominous and cookie-cutter real estate business named Murnau Properties, Miguel plans a neighborhood party to raise funds to save the local bodega. He never expects to find a slew of bloodsucking, wooden stake-fearing vampires behind the whole operation, determined...

As the market leaders in the streaming wars, Netflix are expected to deliver the best original content in an effort to maintain their unassailable lead ahead of the competition. And for the most part, they’ve succeeded. This summer in particular proved to be an unqualified win for them, with countless movies earning rave reviews and scoring massive viewership numbers.
The likes of The Old Guard, Project Power, Extraction, Da 5 Bloods, Spenser Confidential, The Devil All the Time, Enola Holmes, The Kissing Booth 2 and Hubie Halloween offered something for everyone, catering to virtually all audiences and demographics from R-rated action to family friendly capers via PG-13 comedies and fluffy romances.
However, one genre that Netflix haven’t yet managed to conquer is horror. The Haunting anthology may be one of the platform’s marquee TV shows, but the original feature film library is somewhat lacking when it comes to genuine scares.

Netflix has founds its young Colin Kaepernick.
The streamer’s “Colin in Black & White” series has cast “The Get Down” alum Jaden Michael to play the talented quarterback during his formative high school years.
News of Michael’s casting comes around four months after Kaepernick was announced as teaming with Ava DuVernay on the six-episode series. The show aims to provide a look at Kaepernick’s early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family and his journey to become a great quarterback while defining his identity. It will also explore what led him to become a civil rights advocate.
Michael Starrbury, who previously worked with DuVernay on her acclaimed limited series “When They See Us,” is writing the series. He is executive producing alongside DuVernay and Kaepernick, who is set to narrate and appear in the series as himself.

We’re not too far away now from Halloween, which will be a bit different this year due to the ongoing pandemic. However, there’s plenty of horror content to keep us all busy across the various streaming and VOD platforms, with Netflix always providing a reliable stream of genre material, including the recently released The Haunting of Bly Manor. What other horror shows and movies are coming to the site, though, over the next few days?

With “Mulan” arriving on more platforms October 6 and non-premium VOD titles like “The Witches” and Amazon’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” later this month, the home-viewing market was on pause with no new premium titles this weekend. That didn’t stop Jessica Chastain’s “Ava,” however: It had the best showing for a non-premium title in the six months we’ve covered weekly VOD performance.
The $6.99 female-assassin action film, which debuted September 25, placed #1 at the three transactional sites and second at FandangoNow, which lists by revenue. Other recent titles like “The Outpost,” “The Tax Collector,” and “The Silencing” have thrived for multiple weeks, but none topped the charts for two weeks.
Beating out “Ava” at FandangoNow, thanks to its $19.99 price point, is “Antebellum.” In its third week, it’s also #2 at Spectrum. It fell off Apple TV and Google Play, even with less competition among premium titles.

Kicking off October in true spooky style, Netflix has just unleashed a brand new horror pic for audiences to enjoy. And it’s been doing really well on the streaming platform, currently sitting in sixth place on the Top 10 most-watched list in the US.
Released just a few days ago, Vampires vs. the Bronx is a Netflix original that centres on a group of friends who are forced to band together to save their neighbourhood from a bunch of – you guessed it! – bloodsucking vampires. From the sounds of things, the new lycanthropic-centric flick is more of a horror-comedy than a straight up scare-you-out-of-your-pants kind of deal, much akin to 2011’s Attack The Block or 2013’s The World’s End. So, expect one or two funny gags mixed in with the spine-chilling scares.

Netflix and its streaming rivals are putting out a lot of Halloween content this year, meaning that horror fans will have much to choose from over the next month or so. One of the first big seasonal releases for the company, though, is Vampires vs the Bronx, which hits the service this Friday, October 2nd. And based on the trailer and other images that we’ve seen so far, it looks like it could be a lot of fun to watch.
Directed by Oz Rodriguez, Vampires vs the Bronx is a horror-comedy about a Bronx neighborhood having to deal with the effects of gentrification and its threat to the established multicultural community. Check out the Vampires vs. The Bronx trailer below, which seems closer to something like Attack the Block than Eddie […]

If you’ve ever been evicted because your landlord wants to “renovate” and hike the rents, seen your favorite local businesses killed to make room for expensive, low-quality replacements, or watched a racially diverse community turn into an affluent white enclave, you probably already suspect gentrification is an expression of pure evil. Well, now you have proof courtesy of the horror-comedy “Vampires vs. the Bronx,” which drops on Netflix this weekend.
From veteran “SNL” director Osmany Rodriguez (“Brother Nature”), “Vampires vs. the Bronx” follows a group of kids who discover that the gentrification affecting their neighborhood is an invasion of vampires. As the kids defend the Bronx at all costs, hilarity — and a lot of gory bloodshed — ensues.
