The 2024 Oscars began six minutes late on Sunday when pro-Palestine protesters stopped traffic en route to the ceremony, blocking attendees in their cars on Hollywood’s Highland Avenue and calling into question if all of the night’s nominees would arrive at the event.
The demonstrators brought traffic at the intersection of Sunset and Highland to a complete standstill for more than 30 minutes, according to those caught in the disruption, causing some people to leave their vehicles and begin walking toward the event. Police arrived to disperse the blockage, but cars were still stuck at the time of publication. The protests ultimately led to the delay of the broadcast, which was meant to start at 4 p.m. Pt; it ultimately began with a cold open at 4:06 p.m. Pt.

Ovo Arena Wembley came under fire in December when Hiba Ahmad, a Hozier fan, reported having her Free Palestine scarf confiscated by security while attending the singer’s Unreal Unearth tour. At the time, the venue informed the attendee that they were acting on the instruction of Hozier’s camp. They have since issued an apology via social media and clarified that “the decision to stop the guest was not following artist wishes.”
In response to the arena’s acknowledgment of the issue, Hozier wrote: “Thank you to Ovo Arena...

The Sun quotes an insider on the project sharing: “At its heart the video was playful but contained themes of chaos — including car crashes, demolition, explosions, fireworks and crowds fighting.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, 24, has promoted a fundraiser entitled, “Supporting urgent relief for Gaza’s children,” on her Instagram account.
The fundraiser has brought in more than $7.8 million so far and is operated by Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund, a nonprofit based in Kent, Ohio.
Emhoff, whose father, First Gentleman Doug Emhoff, is Jewish, has told reporters that she does not consider herself to be Jewish.
Last week, President Joe Biden called for a humanitarian pause to the bombings, in response to a protestor’s interruptions that he should call for a ceasefire. He clarified that a “pause” was meant to be “time to get the prisoners [Israeli hostages] out.”
Biden said, “This is incredibly complicated for the Israelis… It’s incredibly complicated for the Muslim world as well… I supported a two-state solution, I have from the very beginning.’

Without any doubt, one of the essentials of cinema, or therefore any form of art, is the idea of taking the spectator to a place that is unfamiliar. Whereas this place might be fictional, even fantastic by nature, perhaps one of the most revelatory experiences takes place when the place seems familiar, but actually is quite the opposite. For many of us, geographical or emotional spaces, from foreign countries to the idea of family, may seem familiar, but time and time again we realize we know so very little about these places, even if we have experienced them ourselves.
“Gaza” is screening at London Palestine Film Festival
Many of these place are part of the global consciousness, much due to a more or less constant press coverage. Places such as Damascus or Fukushima are, undoubtedly, known to us, but then again many of us would have to admit they are...

On Monday, after the International Feature Film Oscar committee disqualified the Austrian entry, Sudabeh Mortezai’s “Joy,” the film’s producer and director went over the film and did their own calculations again. “It was a nasty surprise and quite a shock of course,” said Martin Schweighofer, Executive Director of Austrian Films, who sent a protest letter to the Academy on Thursday signed by Mortezai and producer Oliver Neumann.
According to their math, characters speaking subtitled Bini, German, and Pidgin (which uses different grammar and is not intelligible to English speakers) add up to more than 53 percent.
Clearly the languages flow in and out of each other in a way that is tough to count for everyone involved, but the Academy’s six “testers” –including a Pidgin expert–independently calculated the percentages of the languages in the film and came to the conclusion that the English, even without Pidgin, was...

The Academy’s Best International Feature Film committee has disqualified the first-ever Nigerian entry, Genevieve Njaji’s Netflix pickup “Lionheart,” because it is mostly in the English language. Since 2006, the Oscar rules dictate that eligible movies must have a “predominantly non-English dialogue track,” a move made in an attempt to open up more opportunities for films from diverse cultures.
In this case, the official language of Nigeria, which was colonized by the British, is in fact English. The film’s 95-minute running time contains only 11 minutes of non-English dialogue in Igbo, a language of the ethnic group of the Igbo people, making it ineligible for the Best International Feature Film nom. If Nigeria submitted a film which included dialogue that included more than 50 percent in the Igbo language, it would still be eligible. And “Lionheart” can still be submitted for consideration in Best Picture and other categories.
