Carlos PenaVega is looking back at his first time touring nationally with Big Time Rush and admitted that it was actually “really hard” having fellow boy band One Direction as their opening act.
The singer-actor — who makes up one-fourth of the American pop group alongside Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow and Logan Henderson — recently opened up about his experience with the British boy band as their openers on the Better With U Tour in 2012.
“After our show, fans were outside the theater chanting for One Direction,” PenaVega recalled on the Unplanned podcast. “That was really hard for us.”
He noted that Big Time Rush’s North American tour was revealed in the fall of 2011, well before One Direction was added. However, at some point between the tour announcement and them actually hitting the stage, the British group featuring Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson catapulted in global popularity.

When the child-trafficking drama Sound of Freedom conquered the box office this summer, ultimately taking in more than $242 million worldwide, it was touted as a triumph. Leading man Jim Caviezel, hardly seen since his CBS sci-fi series Person of Interest ended in 2016, proved that he could still command an audience. Tim Ballard, the anti-trafficking activist whose purported rescues of abducted children inspired the film, basked in its hagiographic glow. Director and co-writer Alejando Monteverde, who had once believed this project “would never see the light of day,” witnessed it become a global phenomenon.

With a rare Tuesday opening, “Sound of Freedom” (Angel Studios), a drama starring Jim Caviezel as a real-life rescuer of children from traffickers, grossed $11,563,200 — just under the day’s total for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), which played in almost 2,000 more theaters with just under $11.7 million.
Another difference: “Indiana Jones” often played on multiple screens. Based on theater spot-checks, “Freedom” played mostly single screens, often with smaller capacities, and saw sold-out shows. The result was a stark contrast in the films’ per-theater average: “Indiana” was about $2,543 in 4,600 theaters, while “Freedom” saw about $4,400 in 2,634 theaters.
Angel also reported that its “Pay It Forward” promotion grossed an additional $2,679,000 thanks to patrons buying gift tickets for others for future use. Under normal industry practice, that revenue should be counted as they are used. With that among added, the day’s take for the film exceeded $14.2 million, which would make it #1 for the day.

There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.
Opening prospects are unclear.

Frank Skinner has explained why he longer wishes to be on TV.
The comedian, who had his own BBC One chat show in the 1990s, which moved to ITV from 1999 to 2005, said he thinks “radio and podcasts is the place for me” during a new interview.
Skinner was responding to a question that asked him whetherhe was happiest “on stage, radio or telly”.
“I’m 66 now,” he told Metro.co.uk. “I think the human face gets quite hard to look at when you get to about 60 onwards. So I think probably radio and podcasts is the place for me.”
He continued: “Plus, I like not having to shave.”
Skinner has been a fixture on TV screens for three decades now, with appearances on comedy shows, Room 101, Have I Got News For You and Taskmaster.
In 2014, he appeared alongside Peter Capaldi in an episode of Doctor Who.

The CBS teen-parenting comedy pilot Unplanned in Akron has added four new cast members, including Eastbound & Down star Katy Mixon. Mixon is joined by Mr. Iglesias actor Cree Cicchino, Outmatched star Connor Kalopsis, and Ugly Betty alum Christopher Gorham, for the series, which follows two teenagers navigating parenthood. Cicchino, who recently played Luisa Torres in the HBO Max limited series And Just Like That…, will portray Brianna. Described as sharp-witted, outspoken, and unfiltered, Brianna is mature beyond her years, having played “mom” to four younger siblings. Now she has an 8-month-old of her own to take care of. Tenet’s lukewarm second weekend is a sign that the domestic box office still has a long way to go before things get back to normal, especially as New York and Los Angeles theaters remain shuttered.
In the wake of Tenet’s second weekend box office performance, release dates have been shuffled yet again. Warner Bros’ push of Wonder Woman 1984 from October 2 to Christmas gives Tenet a longer competition-free run. Candyman left its October 16 release date and is now expected to be released in 2021. STX Entertainment’s Greenland, which stars Gerard Butler and made $11.5 million internationally, was pushed from its September 25 release to an undecided date later this year. The one move up in the release schedule came from Universal, moving The Croods: A New Age from December 23 to November 25.

With “Unplanned” still performing well at the box office, the recent hot streak for Christian films could continue with Roxann Dawson’s “Breakthrough,” which is hitting theaters tomorrow ahead of Easter weekend
“Breakthrough” tells the story of a married couple (Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas) who rely on their faith to pull through after their son falls through a frozen lake and ends up in a coma. The film is also a historic one for the film industry, as it will be the first film released by 20th Century Fox under ownership of Disney, which completed its acquisition of the 83-year-old studio last month. It will be one of the final films released through Fox 2000, which Disney is shutting down after it completes the release of its remaining films.

For the second consecutive week, Shazam! held on tightly to the top spot on the Box-Office Weekend leaderboard. This week, the film’s second in release, the latest film in the DC Extended Universe, added $25.1 million to give it a two-week total of $94.9 million. The Zachary Levi-led film continues to perform will internationally as well, adding $35.9 million to give it a global two-week total of approximately $258.8 million.

The unbelievable has happened, that is, a film in the DC Extended Universe has proven both critically and commercially popular. Shazam! performed above expectations, delivering a debut opening weekend of $53.5 million. The film, starring Zachary Levi, did well internationally as well, generating approximately $102 million to give it a worldwide opening weekend somewhere south of $160 million.
The horror film remake Pet Sematary debuted just behind Shazam! with $25 million, giving it the second-best performance on opening weekend for a Stephen King movie, just behind It (2017). The live-action version of Dumbo finished in third place with $18.2 million and a two-week total of $76.3 million. Just behind that adorable pachyderm was Jordan Peele’s horror film Us, which added another $13.8 million in its third week of release to bring its total to $152.4 million.

If you slept through most of the fearfully and terribly made Pure Flix propaganda film “Unplanned,” which opened in 1,000 theaters this weekend, regardless of at what point your eyes opened, you’d still awaken mid-lecture about the evils of Planned Parenthood. But “Unplanned” doesn’t limit its non-stop proselytizing to abortion; it’s also clear in its ideas about a woman’s role in the family and in the world, which go hand in hand with its anti-choice themes.

Welcome back to the weekly box office report! Each and every Sunday, expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, Dumbo crashes the party, while Jordan Peele has his second weekend with Us, which hoped to continue setting some records. Without too much else entering the marketplace, it was a two horse race. How did the pair do? Let us take a look right now at just that… Flying to the top spot this weekend, opening somewhat below expectations, Disney’s latest remake of a cartoon classic in Dumbo. Taking in just $45 million has to be considered a slight disappointment, though Tim Burton’s effort did do enough to capture first place today. How it fares in the weeks to come will determine whether Dumbo is a success or a failure for Disney. Coming...

Disney's Dumbo was unable to reach studio or industry expectations, but still managed a #1 finish, making for the third different #1 film at the domestic weekend box office in as many weeks. Meanwhile holdovers such as Us and Captain Marvel continued their strong performances and Pure Flix's release of the anti-abortion drama Unplanned managed to out-perform expectations and find itself a spot in the top five. With an estimated $45 million, Disney's Dumbo topped the weekend box office though fell short of the studio's $50+ million expectations and well short of what some thought would be a $60+ million debut. While the performance is well ahead of select, recent Disney releases such as Christopher Robin ($24.6m opening), Alice Through the Looking Glass ($26.9m opening) and Pete's Dragon ($21.5m opening), it's well short of films such as Cinderella ($67.9 million opening), which online ticket retailer Fandango.com reported Dumbo was outpacing in advance ticket sales.

Tim Burton’s remake of “Dumbo” is estimated to open just below Disney’s projections of a $50 million launch. After grossing $15.2 million from 4,259 screens on Friday, the film is now estimated to earn a $47.6 million domestic opening.
By comparison, the 2014 remake of “Cinderella,” which also opened in March, scored an opening weekend of $67 million. “Dumbo” did receive an A- from audiences on CinemaScore, but with a 52 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and 3.5 stars from general audience polls on Postrak, this reported $170 million blockbuster isn’t likely to post much of a profit, especially with “Shazam” entering theaters next weekend as heavy competition for family audiences.

Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” is flying toward a $48 million opening weekend in North America, while the second session of Jordan Peele’s “Us” should take in about $32 million, early estimates showed on Friday.
“Dumbo’s” launch is slightly lower than recent Disney forecasts for the live-action re-imagining of the 1941 animated movie. “Dumbo” earned $2.6 million on Thursday night and is expanding to 4,259 North American venues.
The movie stars Danny DeVito as the owner of a struggling circus who enlists Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock. The children’s love for the sad-eyed pachyderm helps him fly. Michael Keaton stars as a shady entrepreneur, with Alan Arkin as a Wall Street tycoon and Eva Green as an aerial artist.
“Dumbo” is produced by Justin Springer, Ehren Kruger, Katterli Frauenfelder, and Derek Frey.

Disney’s live-action remake of its animated classic “Dumbo” spread its ears and soared to $2.6 million in its Thursday previews. It opens wide this weekend.
Tim Burton directs the children’s film about the flying baby elephant, and trackers have the film projected to earn between $40-50 million in its opening weekend, with Disney projecting around the $50 million mark.
The figure would be lower than other recent live-action remakes from Disney. “Cinderella” made $2.3 million in its Thursday previews and grossed $67.8 million in its opening weekend in March 2015. Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” earned an even higher $4.2 million ahead of a $103 million opening weekend. For some more recent examples, “Dumbo” is in the range of the third “How to Train Your Dragon” film, which made $3 million ahead of a $55 million opening weekend, and “The Lego Movie 2,” which did $2.1 million on Thursday before opening to $34 million.

Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” has taken flight with an estimated $2.6 million in North America on Thursday night.
It’s a similar figure to the $3 million earned by “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” during Thursday previews and the $2.1 million gross for “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”
Disney expects the live-action re-imagining of its 1941 animated movie to make around $50 million this weekend when it launches in 4,259 North American venues. Should that estimate hold, “Dumbo” will probably nab the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office over the second weekend of Jordan Peele’s horror hit “Us.”
“Dumbo” is the latest Disney live-action remake of its animated library, highlighted by “Beauty and the Beast,” which opened with $174 million and went on to gross $1.2 billion worldwide. The studio has two more such reboots coming this summer with Guy Ritchie’s “Aladdin” launching on May 24 and Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King...

Editors note: Ashley Bratcher, who lives in Georgia, is starring in the Pure Flix movie Unplanned, the story of Planned Parenthood director-turned-anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson that is bowing Friday in 1,006 theaters nationwide. She reached out to Deadline to respond to Alyssa Milano’s guest column earlier this week seeking to draw Hollywood’s attention to Georgia’s “Heartbeat Bill” legislation, which proposes to outlaw abortions once a doctor detects a fetal heartbeat in the womb. Milano urged the film and TV industries, which utilize the Peach State’s expansive tax incentives, to boycott the state if the bill passes. That bill, HB481, is due for a final vote next week, with Gov. Brian Kemp expected to sign it if it gets to his desk.
Dear Alyssa Milano,

This weekend's release of Disney's live-action re-imagining of Dumbo will serve as the third new #1 in as many weeks at the domestic box office. Right behind it, last weekend's #1 film, Us, and Disney's holdover release of Captain Marvel will continue to perform well, helping deliver a strong March at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, Pure Flix will debut Unplanned and Neon releases Harmony Korine's The Beach Bum, both in over one thousand locations. Looking at a #1 finish is Disney's latest live-action re-imagining of one of their classic animated features in the Tim Burton-directed Dumbo, which takes the 64-minute animated 1941 feature and delivers a nearly two-hour retelling. Disney will debut the film in over 4,200 theaters and forecasting the film's opening weekend performance is not at all clear cut. The studio is anticipating a $50+ million debut while other sources are suggesting a debut close to $60-65 million. The critical response...

Pure Flix entertainment, the family friendly label known for distributing God’s Not Dead and a few dozen other movies aimed at Christians, will release its first R-rated film next month, and it is none too happy about having to do so.
The film, Unplanned, tells the true story of Abby Johnson, who defected from Planned Parenthood to become a pro-life activist. While the filmmakers were certain they were making a PG-13 film, the MPAA has informed them that it will, in fact, be rated R unless all scenes of abortions are removed or altered.
