On the most literal level, deceptively busy Sundance novelty “Love Me” is about the relationship between a buoy adrift at sea and a satellite circling the earth. Sam and Andy Zuchero’s eccentric cosmic rom-com takes place in a time after humans have gone extinct, when the surviving machines’ only references are a massive hard drive’s worth of data combed from search engines and social media sites. Audiences can root for the two devices, or they may plunge as deep as they want into this most unconventional of love stories, projecting themselves onto AI characters embodied (in various forms) by Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun.
Beautiful and complicated, those two stars make a most enticing screen couple, even if they’re just playing idealized avatars for a pair of robots. The Zucheros’ creation is audacious and original, but also suffers from some of the same Adhd issues that afflicted...

Apple TV+ is returning to its Bridgerton-esque period drama The Buccaneers.
Based on the unfinished Edith Wharton novel, the high-end series launched last month. It stars Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton (I Am Ruth), Kristine Frøseth (The Assistant), Alisha Boe (When You Finish Saving The World), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club) and Imogen Waterhouse (The Outpost).
The Buccaneers charts goings-on in the late 19th century as a group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, their hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.

BAFTA has shaken up major categories and rung in some eligibility changes as entries open for the 2024 TV awards.
Limited drama is a new category for scripted one-off programs or series that tell a complete story over 1-19 episodes, replacing separate categories for single drama and mini-series. “The introduction of limited drama maintains the opportunity for single self-contained films to be eligible following a decline in entries to the single drama category in recent years,” BAFTA said.
To put this in perspective, at the 2023 awards, “I Am Ruth,” starring Kate Winslet, won the single drama category, while Nicôle Lecky’s “Mood” won the best mini-series category. In 2024, there will only be one winner, under the new limited drama category. The drama series category remains unchanged.
The changes were flagged earlier by BAFTA. As set out in the 2023 rulebook, categories with under 20 entries will see three, rather than the standard four nominations announced,...

After 18 years at BAFTA, Krishnendu Majumdar is having trouble switching off.
It’s been almost two months since the media executive, who recently won a BAFTA for producing the Kate Winslet-led Channel 4 drama “I Am Ruth,” finished his three-year term as chair of the British Academy, handing over the reins to agency boss Sara Putt. But it took a minute, he says, to stop going on high alert every time he clocked a buzzy topic that BAFTA might be asked to comment on.
“You see something online and you think, ‘Oh I wonder how we should respond?’” says Majumdar, known to most in the industry as simply ‘Krish.’ “And then it’s like, ‘No, no. I don’t do that’ … I’m just a member. I’m not on any committees. I’m not a trustee. I don’t speak on their behalf anymore.”

The former Chair of BAFTA has urged writers, actors and studios to “come together to find a fair, equitable solution,” while pointing to improvements required in “hidden areas” of diversity.
Krishnendu Majumdar, who also runs BAFTA-winning I Am Ruth indie Me + You Productions, said he has many friends and colleagues striking in the UK and is aware of many affected productions.
“I want the strike to end,” he said. “There needs to be a coming together of writers, actors and studios to find a fair equitable solution going forwards because it’s costing hundreds of millions of dollars a day.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today, Majumdar, who is ending a three-year term, pointed to BAFTA’s diversity work, which has seen it uproot its nominations process across the last couple of years and support various all-year-round initiatives. He left BAFTA in June and was replaced by Sara Putt.

Gilmore Girls has ended twice and fans still hold out hope for a second season of A Year in the Life. Both endings were controversial, both among fans and the stars. Sean Gunn and Scott Patterson weighed in on both endings.
Sean Gunn | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Gunn was a guest on Patterson’s I Am All In podcast on Sept. 14 taking fan questions. When asked how they felt about the ending of Gilmore Girls, Gunn shared his frustration with the season 7 finale and Patterson with A Year in the Life.
Sean Gunn doesn’t know ‘Gilmore Girls’ but he knows what he likes
Gunn prefaced his answer by establishing that he’s no TV critic by any stretch. However, living with Kirk and the Stars Hollow gang for seven seasons, there was no denying something was off when Gilmore Girls ended.

Spike Lee says that Beyoncé’s album of the year loss at this year’s Grammys was “some straight-up bullshit” while discussing the “tricky territory of validation” Black artists find themselves in during awards season.
In an interview with The Guardian, the Oscar winner shared his feelings about how the most awarded artist in Grammys history has been snubbed four times in the album of the year category. While Lee admitted he’s “not the male president of the Bey Hive,” he does, like her fan base, “love and support” her. That includes supporting her getting her due for the “amazing” Renaissance album.
“I know she’s won multiple Grammys, but four times nominated for album of the year and she’s lost every time?” he said. “No disrespect to those artists like Adele or Harry Styles who won. It’s not their fault, but that’s some straight-up bullshit.

Nick Cave has said that ChatGPT and AI songwriting are “a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human”.
ChatGPT is a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022.
It is built on top of OpenAI’s Gpt-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques.
The 65-year-old singer and songwriter addressed the growing interest in the chatbox service in his blog The Red Hand Files.
He revealed that he received plenty of song submissions from his fans that were generated on ChatGPT.
Responding to a submission by a fan named Mark, Cave wrote: “With all the love and respect in the world, the track is bulls*** and a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human.”
The lyrics of the song read: “I am the sinner, I am the saint/ I am the darkness, I am the light/ I am the hunter,...

It takes a special and often elusive alchemy for a show to resonate with critics and the public alike. Dominic Savage’s BAFTA-nominated “I Am” anthology series has managed that very trick, drawing praise from both quarters for its searing kitchen sink realism told squarely from a female perspective.
Variety spoke with the series’ creator, writer and director Dominic Savage, along with his producer Krishnendu Majumdar and “I Am Kirsty” actor Samantha Morton, about their experiences, the show’s origins and Usp, and future plans.
Shot in a naturalistic style evocative of the documentary form, “I Am” is a powerful excursion into the trials faced by women. There have been two seasons to date, totalling three episodes apiece, with topics spanning coercive relationships, mid-thirties identity crises and emotional breakdowns, all explored with an unvarnished verité all too rare in contemporary television.

Santa Claus first appeared on film all the way back in 1898, when he starred in a short film by George Albert Smith called, appropriately, "Santa Claus." In it, a silent Santa sneaks across a rooftop, climbs down a chimney, and leaves gifts for a little girl and boy who are nestled in their beds.
Ever since, holiday films have been stuffed with depictions of Father Christmas. Some are nice, and some are naughty. Some are jolly, and some are degenerate. Most are merry, but a few are murderous. Many films try to put their own spin on the Santa mythos, too, trying to make their St. Nick stand out from the pack of present-carrying holiday patriarchs. But others simply try to spread holiday joy, offering something jolly to put on while you sip hot cocoa and trim the tree.

Sorry Kate Winslet, but you can’t just do this to me. I sat down to watch the Oscar winner and queen of Reading star in I Am Ruth, and, two hours later… I’m a broken woman. In Channel 4’s feature-length drama, Winslet plays a mother wracked with worry as her daughter’s mental health disintegrates. What destroyed me wasn’t the way Ruth fulsomely swears out loud when she’s alone in the car, nor how she scuttles into the garden to smoke a secret ciggie when completely exasperated. No, it was the way her voice is always just a little bit too high, hanging on by a thread, cheeriness hiding desperation – she exists, instinctively, to gee up everyone else.
As is the way with Dominic Savage’s female-led I Am anthology series, the story has been devised alongside Winslet herself, and the action is all improvised.

Kate Winslet had to fight every ounce of maternal instinct in her body on the set of her latest project, I Am Ruth. In the feature-length Channel 4 drama, Winslet and her real-life daughter, Mia Threapleton, star as a mother and her child caught in the cold, lonely grip of a mental health crisis. “There were moments when I would look at Mia and go, ‘Oh my god, she’s doing it. She’s really doing it.’ And I wanted to hug her and make it stop,” Winslet told press at the event’s launch last week, blinking back tears as she recalled her 22-year-old acting out a panic attack. “My instinct was to go, ‘I’ve got you,’ straight away, and I had to resist it at every turn.”

Kate Winslet has discussed her experiences acting alongside her daughter, Mia Threapleton, for the first time.
Appearing in London to promote the feature-length television drama “I Am Ruth” – in which Winslet and Threapleton recreate their relationship in a fictional setting– the British actor spoke of how aspects of life imitated art during a Q&a session.
“For sure, there was some personal overlap,” Winslet confided. “It’s a mother/daughter story: it is inevitable. We know how to push each other’s buttons.” Winslet also praised her daughter’s performance, saying that she was “impressed” by Threapleton every day throughout the shoot.
Whilst Winslet was last seen in 2021’s acclaimed U.S. drama “Mare of Easttown”, “I Am Ruth” marks a continuation of U.K. broadcaster Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning and female-led anthology drama series, “I Am.” The brainchild of British writer and director Dominic Savage, two seasons to date...

In the drama, which was conceived and developed by Winslet and filmmaker Dominic Savage, the “Titanic” actor plays Ruth, a concerned mother who struggles to help her teenage daughter Freya (Threapleton) as she becomes increasingly consumed by social media.
In the trailer, the duo are seen growing apart, with Freya withdrawing further into herself despite Ruth’s attempts to connect with her. Digital effects can be an amazing resource for creating fantasy worlds and creatures, but like any tool, they can be misused. Early CGI in projects like "The Abyss," "Young Sherlock Holmes," and, of course, "Jurassic Park" blew people's minds, and studios that had previously relied on miniatures and stop-motion animation all of a sudden wanted their own computerized creations.
But making digital characters isn't that simple, and the results are often less than stunning. This is rarely the fault of the modelers, animators, or other professionals who work tirelessly to bring these creatures to life. Sometimes, the time and money just isn't there. Sometimes, puppets simply work better. Even if the CGI is well done, it can destroy the characters' charm and undermine what the movie was going for in the first place.
The misbegotten CGI effects that follow fall into all of those categories. Plenty of them are bad,...

Francis Lawrence's feature adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name was a remarkable success, grossing over 585 million total worldwide (not adjusted for inflation). Will Smith was at the apex of his action star career, coasting on the well-earned coattails he cemented in the 1990s with the likes of "Men in Black" and "Independence Day." All things considered, it was a serendipitous merging of creative forces. Matheson's novel is well-regarded as one of the century's greatest science fiction achievements, and Smith is tailor-made for this kind of weighty, grim science fiction.
Unfortunately for some, "I Am Legend" only occasionally flirted with the greatness it was so close to achieving. Adapting any novel is a difficult prospect; the act of cutting and preserving, the hard choices made to tailor the written word to a visual medium. This 3D-animated feature from China doesn’t explore any new territories as it follows the well-known (and cheered by many) formulae of a sports drama combined with a master-apprentice theme. But the way it tells the story, both in terms of narrative and aesthetics, is highly enjoyable. Also, the featured “sport” provides loads of thrilling extravaganza spiced with local and culture-related flavor because the director, Sun Hai-peng, along with the writer Li Zelin, brought the lion dance as the leitmotif.

Werner Herzog’s “Theater of Thought” may be the most egg-headed documentary to ever open with a quote “ascribed to Chuck Berry.” To wit: “In my Theater of Thought I am rocking. / In the Dance of my Mind, I am swinging. / C’mon, babe, roll over to me.” A quick Google search finds no such quote ascribed to Berry, or, for that matter, anyone else. That’s Herzog for you.

Nothing screams "must-see" quite like a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaboration. They're the dream duo of modern American cinema, the closest thing we have to a Frank Capra-James Stewart tandem. They've made five films together, and all but one ("The Terminal") are legitimately great.
The only baffling element of their creative partnership is that it didn't happen sooner. Hanks was in his 40s and Spielberg in his 50s when they came together for 1998's devastating World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan." If you're wondering what took so long, Spielberg is right there with you. If the two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker had been able to swing it, he would've loved to direct Hanks in 1993's "Philadelphia."

The Houston luminary is sleeker, cooler, and Blacker, making everything about the way we viewed things a hot-minute ago seem bland, primitive, and flat-out draining. Indeed, the 28-time Grammy winner may be the only sovereign of pop to have truly evolved artistically while also expanding an enormous commercial empire. Michael Jackson became less cool with each more-ambitious release, going from the effortless elegance of Off the Wall to the forced spectacle of Bad.

Exclusive: Andrew Troy’s film I Am a Man – The True Story of Chief Standing Bear has been named as one of the first that will benefit from the Cherokee Nation Film Office’s tax incentive program, in support of filmmakers seeking filming locations and crew in Oklahoma. The Cnfo’s mission with its 1M incentive, announced earlier this year, is to entice more film and TV projects to shoot within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation—following a recent influx of projects like Killers of the Flower Moon and Reservation Dogs—while also supporting Native stories and increasing the presence of Native Americans in every level of the film and television industry.
