- In 1931, several cops gather in a storefront at night on a street of New York City. The leader, William Dole, tells the other two to let him count the money and handle the talking. Two men in alien outfits come and the one in charge identifies Dole by name and says he's a Chronicom from Chronyca-2. The leade3r takes a gun out of his case, and Dole yells at his men to take them. The Chronicoms blast the two men down with alien blasters and Dole shoots at the leader. The bullets have no effect on the Chronicom, and he grabs Dole by the throat and pushes him to kneel on the floor. Dole asks what he wants, and the man puts a device up to Dole's face. The leader says that he wants Dole's face, and Dole screams in agony as the device turns his face into a mask of blank skin.
A few seconds later, Dole's body drops to the floor. The Chronicom takes Dole's uniform, and has his face. A gangster comes in, and "Dole" greets him, smiling. The other Chronicoms aren't wearing their human faces, and they gun down the gangster as he screams.
Zephyr 1cloaks as it arrives above 1931 NYC, and Simmons tells Mack and Daisy that it's their most advanced LMD. Daisy activates the Coulson LMD, and he greets the trio. He wonders why no one is talking to him, and Simmons tells him that he's missed a lot. She warns him that the last update of his mind that she had was from the Framework, and he may feel some disorientation as his mind catches up to the present. Coulson realizes that his arm is fixed but he doesn't feel the same. He wonders why, and Daisy tells him that he's a LMD. Coulson doesn't believe it, and knows the word "Chronicom".
Coulson realizes that he died and came back, and then he died again and came back. He stares off in shock, and Simmons warns Daisy and Mack that she can't "fix" the LMD and there's a lot of data flooding his mind. Daisy tells Coulson to calm down, and Coulson absorbs all the information from the last two years. Mack finally hits the button to shut the LMD down, and both Daisy and Simmons object. Mack says that anything LMD-related is a director-level decision and it's not up for debate. The two women agree, and Mack tells Simmons to tell them everything she knows.
As the Zephyr lands on a rooftop, Simmons, Mack, Daisy, Yoyo, and Deke gather in the cargo bay. Simmons explains that the Chronicoms plan to eliminate SHIELD from history, and Simmons says that there are specific "tides" in time. The Chronicoms took one and the Zephyr followed them. She and Fitz never expected to go back to 1931, and Simmons has no idea what the Chronicoms are up to or how to find them. A cryogenic chamber with May in it is in the cargo bay.
Simmons takes the others to the command center that has been in storage and powers it up. Enoch is there, and Simmons says that since the Chronicoms scanned their brains once before, it's too dangerous for any of them to know where Bobo is, including her. Mack tells Deke to get them some period clothing so they can blend in, and Simmons already has gathered period money and gives it to Deke. Yoyo is quarantined and confined to Zephyr, and Mack tells Daisy that her purple-dyed hair has to go.
Daisy asks Simmons how May is, and Simmons tells her that May's core temperature is nearly normal. Simmons only says that they've been apart "too long", and tells Daisy that it's good to see her.
Mack activates the LMD, and Coulson tells Mack that he shouldn't be there. He wonders if the two years of his memories he relived was even his life, and Mack says that it was Coulson's. The LMD says that Coulson didn't want to be brought back, and Mack tells him that the Chronicoms scanned Fitzsimmons' minds and have Fury's Black Box. Simmons figures that if they're going to get ahead of the Chronicoms, they need the LMD with Coulson's memories and a clue that only he might recognize. Mack wants Coulson to speak for himself and asks if he can count on him, and Coulson says that he'd do anything for the team. However, if they get through it, he's going to reevaluate.
Mack figures that they need to find the Chronicoms before they change history, and Simmons and Enoch come in and say that they've heard a report on the radio of three bodies being found without faces. Enoch identifies it as an invasive Hunter procedure to procure identities, and Simmons reports that Deke has come back with period clothing. The team suit up and go out on the street as the sun comes up.
Daisy, Deke, Coulson, and Mack walk down the street and Deke explains that they'd have to do something major to alter time so it would affect themselves. Deke hands out sheriff badges that he printed out before they left, and admits that he didn't know what their cover would be. They go to the storefront where the bodies were found, and Coulson flashes his badge and claims they're with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Patrolman Fischer stops them and asks Daisy why she's a Mountie, and Daisy tells Fischer that she breaks the ribs of every man when they give her lip. She threatens to knock Fischer out, and he quickly backs down and lets them through.
Inside the store, Coulson finds one body with a face: the gangster. Deke smells whiskey on him and Daisy figures he's a bootlegger, and Coulson finds a whiskey bottle on the bootlegger with a swordfish on it. Coulson tells the others that the first year he was at the Academy, he learned there was a safehouse near there disguised as a speakeasy, and the password to get in was "swordfish". Mack tells Deke and Daisy to try and identify the bodies while he and Coulson look into Swordfish.
At the Zephyr, Enoch repairs May's damaged tissue. Yoyo asks Simmons if they can trust Enoch, and Simmons says that she's only alive because of him. She figures May should be up in a week or two, and tells Yoyo that her body is breaking down the Shrike material in it. Yoyo is reliever to learn that she's cleared to go outside, and Simmons gives her artificial arms that Fitz made for Yoyo calibrated to her Inhuman ability. Yoyo says that she doesn't want to pretend like she lost her real arms, but Simmons asks when is the last time Yoyo felt anything with her fingertips, and tells her to take her time deciding.
Coulson and Mack go to an old post office that the speakeasy is under, and Coulson knocks on the door. He gives the password and the doorman lets them in. All Coulson knows that the man behind the bar, codenamed Gemini, was a SSR asset. They approach the bartender, Freddy and say that there was an incident, and they want to talk to Gemini about it. Freddy and several men draw guns on them,
Deke sample one corpse's DNA and sample his bone structure to recreate the face. Dole and the other disguised Chronicoms pull up outside, and Dole tells his men that they have to maintain their cover for the night. Daisy goes out to stall, and Dole recognizes her. He figures that SHIELD has followed them to 1931 and tells his men to eliminate all SHIELD agents. Two of the Chronicoms go over to Daisy and one of them her that there's a suspicious truck in the back. He invites Daisy to inspect it with him, and she goes with the two officers. Meanwhile, another Chronicom, Abel, tells Fisher not to come inside and there may be screaming. Abel then goes inside himself.
Deke sees Abel's face and realizes that it came from one of the corpses' whose face he recreated on his scanning device. He tries to bluff, but Abel sees through it and grabs him by the neck.
The two Chronicoms draw their revolvers on Daisy, but she sees one of them in the truck's rearview mirror and attacks them in hand-to-hand.
Abel asks Deke how many agents are there, and he jams the scanning probe into Abel's neck.
The Chronicom knocks Daisy down and picks up his revolver that she knocked out of his hand. Deke runs out and yells a warning, then barricades the store door, and Daisy hits the Chronicom with a quake blast. After Deke hotwires the truck, he and Daisy drive off as Abel recovers and breaks out of the barricaded door to the shop.
Freddy asks what happened to Jimmy Bottles, the bootlegger, and Mack says that someone else killed him. When Freddy says that they're already dead, Coulson walks over to the man, takes his shotgun, and aims the gun at the man. Mack attacks the other agents Coulson tells Freddy again that they want to talk to Gemini, and Ernest Hazard Koenig comes in. Mack recognizes him from the Koenigs in their time, and Coulson tells Koenig that they come in peace.
Yoyo attaches the artificial arms and touches her face. She goes to Simmons and tells her that her arms feel strange but better, and thanks Simmons for them. Simmons explains that Fitz said he was going to send her a message, but she isn't sure how to find it. She says that she isn't going to reach out to him because the Chronicoms are probably listening and they have to maintain a low profile.
Daisy and Deke return, driving the truck into the cargo bay. Daisy reveals the second Chronicom officer in the back, and Simmons warns that his motor functions are coming back online. She tells the others to tie the Chronicom up and they'll get some answers.
Coulson tells Koenig that there's a new gang of ruthless killers in NYC, and Mack claims that they also killed one of their people. All they want to do is take them out and keep things the way they are. Koenig says that he's supplying booze to a party for the New York state governor: Franklin Roosevelt. Freddy breaks a bottle and Koenig goes over to check on him, and Coulson and Mack work out that FDR becomes President in a few years and creates the SSR, which becomes SHIELD in the future.
Dole and another Chronicom go to the hall where the party is occurring, and where the police will be providing security.
That night, the SHIELD team infiltrates the party, with Mack posing as a bartender. Coulson is working as a waiter, and Daisy and Deke come in posing as party guests. They don't recognize the cops providing security but Daisy admits that there was at least one policeman, maybe more, that they never identified. Mack tells Daisy and Coulson to stay close to FDR when he arrives and keep him safe.
Daisy stays behind and asks Mack how Coulson. He says that Coulson appear like his old self,
Simmons prepares to overload the captive Chronicom's neural system with junk data, figuring he might spit out something useful. She jams a probe into the back of the Chronicom's head, and he goes into convulsions.
Daisy rejoins Coulson and as they wait for FDR, she apologizes for bringing him back. Coulson tells her that it's all surreal and he has data in his head telling him that he left her a letter, and figures his death was a lot for her. Daisy tells him that it was a nice letter and maybe she'll let him read it sometime.
FDR arrives and when his arrival is announced, the guests all applaud. Coulson notes that FDR is walking, even though he had leg braces because of his polio. Mack is thrilled to see FDR since he took on discrimination in the workplace. Deke asks Freddy, who is working the bar, how he fell in with Koenig. Freddy explains that Koenig offered him work after his father died. Deke sympathizes since he lost his father as well,
The captive Chronicom says that this race's anthropologists have studied Earth for thousands of years and they know what thread to pull to eliminate SHIELD forever. Simmons pushes harder, and Enoch warns that the Chronicom could shut down permanently. She asks how the Chronicom how they plan to go after FDR.
At the party, Coulson tells Daisy that for the first time, they're both superheroes. Daisy wonders what the Chronicoms are waiting for if FDR is out in the open, and Coulson suggests they might not want to show themselves in front of witnesses.
FDR gets up to go, and Coulson figures that he stashed his wheelchair close at the service entrance. Daisy figures the Chronicoms will go after \FDR once he's out of sight, and she and Coulson head for the service entrance. Mack and Deke see them go and go after them.
The captive Chronicom threatens to overload. When Enoch warns about the overload, Simmons pours the port out of the prisoner's head but he continues babbling, saying that FDR is the target.
Coulson and Daisy find FDR getting into his wheelchair and Coulson yells a warning, but the Chronicoms aren't there. FDR assumes that Coulson had too much to drink and asks him for help getting into his wheelchair. Coulson is glad to oblige, and FDR shakes his hand. An aide wheel FDR away as Mack and Deke arrive. Coulson figures that they're missing something.
At the bar, a woman comes up to Freddy and tells him that she's his contact.
The Chronicom says that Freddy is the target, and then overloads, melting down.
The contact tells Freddy that they need somewhere quiet to talk, and tells him to follow her. Meanwhile, Dole and the others wait to shoot Freddy.
Simmons calls Mack and the others and says that the Chronicoms are targeting Freddy.
Once they're in a service corridor, the contact tells Freddy that she and Freddy's father worked together and he was powerful, but took the coward's way out. Freddy asks why she wanted to see him, and the woman says that she has a second chance for him. She gives him several vials and says that if he takes them to the docks, her employer will reward him and his family's glory will be restored. Freddy takes one of the vials and asks what's in it, and she says that it's the future.
The Chronicoms step out and shoot the woman dead, and Dole prepares to shoot Freddy, saying that he's the threat. Daisy arrives and quake-blasts Dole and his fellow Chronicom into the adjacent kitchen, then goes in after them and fights the two Chronicoms.
The three men arrive, and Deke tells Freddy that they're saving his life. Mack and Deke take Freddy to the speakeasy, and the dying woman mutters Freddy's name. Coulson hears Daisy fighting and tells the woman that he'll be right with her, and goes into the kitchen.
Daisy is fighting the two Chronicoms, and Dole grabs her and pins her to a wall. Coulson grabs Dole's hand and throws him across the kitchen, and uses the strength of his LMD body to fight Dole on equal terms. Daisy fights the other Chronicom, which throws her around the kitchen and grabs a cleaver. Coulson defeats Dole and together, he and Daisy take down the remaining Chronicom. Daisy knocks the Chronicom out of the kitchen into the ballroom. The other cops see him and run into the kitchen, but Daisy and Coulson have already escaped.
Coulson and Daisy take the woman to the speakeasy and tell Koenig that a doctor friend is going to meet them there. Mack, Deke, and Freddy haven't gotten there yet, and Coulson asks Koenig why the "new gang" would target Freddy. Koenig says that "Old Man Malick", Freddy's father, jumped out a window. He confirms that Freddy's last name is Malick, which Daisy and Coulson both recognize.
As Mack drives to the speakeasy, Freddy explains that they wanted him to make a delivery.
Coulson and Daisy figure that Freddy is the future father of Gideon Malick, the head of Hydra in America. They realize that to save SHIELD, they have to save Hydra.
On the Zephyr, Enoch discovers that May is no longer in the cryogenic chamber. He looks around for her but doesn't see her hanging from the ceiling.
